Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.Endowment funds are designated for purposes that align within the organization's exempt purpose.
Part X : FIN48 FootnoteNorthern Light Health, its hospitals, and certain other affiliates have been determined by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax-exempt charitable organizations as described in Section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code (the Code) and, accordingly, are exempt from federal income taxes on related income pursuant to Section 501(a) of the Code. Accordingly, no provision for federal income taxes has been recorded in the accompanying consolidated financial statements for these organizations.Tax-exempt charitable organizations could be required to record an obligation for income taxes as the result of a tax position they have historically taken on various tax exposure items including unrelated business income or tax status. Under guidance issued by the FASB, assets and liabilities are established for uncertain tax positions taken or positions expected to be taken in income tax returns when such positions are judged to not meet the "more-likely-than-not" threshold, based upon the technical merits of the position. Estimated interest and penalties, if applicable, related to uncertain tax positions are included as a component of income tax expense. Northern Light Health has evaluated its tax position taken or expected to be taken on income tax returns and concluded the impact to be not material.Certain of Northern Light Health's affiliates are taxable entities. Deferred taxes related to these entities are based on the difference between the financial statement and tax basis of assets and liabilities using enacted tax rates in effect in the years the differences are expected to reverse. The deferred tax assets and liabilities for these entities are not material.

Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 5The Maine Shared CHNA research team conducted a statewide qualitative assessment among stakeholders to identify and prioritize significant health issues in communities across the state. The assessment, coordinated with the Maine CDC, engaged public health expertise throughout the process. Community outreach was conducted between September 2018 and January 2019. Community forums with residents and service providers were held in the county. All forms of engagement included public forums and key informant interviews. The purpose of this outreach was to gather feedback on data and to identify health priorities, community assets, and gaps in resources to be used in health improvement planning. Local forums were conducted in partnership with the Maine CDC to solicit input from individuals representing populations with health disparities including medically under-served, low-income, or minority populations. The following organizations attended the October 18, 2018 or December 6, 2018 Kennebec Shared CHNA Community Engagement Forum and provided valuable feedback on the Maine Shared CHNA.Persons representing broad interests of the community who were consulted during the engagement process (the following list was extracted from the Kennebec County CHNA report, pages 27-29): Alcom LLC, Anthem, Inc., Backyard Farms, Bath Iron Works/General Dynamics, Central Public Health District, City of Waterville, Cives Steel Company, CM Almy, Colby College, Community Member, Cross Benefit Solutions, Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership, Family Violence Project, Friends of Quarry Road, G&E Roofing Company, Inc., Healthy Communities of the Capital Area, Healthy Northern Kennebec, HealthReach Community Health Centers, HUB International New England, LLC, Huhtamaki, Jennifer Kierstead Consulting, Inc., Kennebec Behavioral Health, Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, Maine CDC, MaineGeneral Health, MaineGeneral Medical Center, MaineGeneral Prevention & Healthy Living Drug Overdose Prevention Program, MaineGeneral Workplace Health, Maine Oral Health Coalition, Maine Public Health Association, Maine Veterans' Homes, Mastering Worksite Wellness, MaineGeneral Employee Assistance Program, Mid Maine Homeless Shelter & Services, Northern Light Acadia Hospital, Northern Light Health, Northern Light Inland Hospital, Peachey Builders, Retired community member, Sappi North America, Sharon Lee, Writer, Spectrum Generations, Steve Miller, Writer, Summit Natural Gas of Maine, The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers, United Way of Mid-Maine, University of Maine system, Winslow Baptist Church, Winslow Township School District.Key informant interview populations identified by the Maine Shared CHNA steering committee included medically under-served and vulnerable populations to ensure their input was heard and captured included: Veterans; Tribal communities; Adults ages 65 and older who are isolated or have multiple chronic conditions; Non-English speakers, undocumented individuals, immigrants, and refugees; Deaf individuals and those with other physical disabilities; Adolescents/youth; LGBTQ; People with mental health conditions and developmental disabilities; Rural individuals; Individuals in substance use disorder recovery/substance use disorder prevention and treatment professionals. The following is a list of organizations who participated in Key Informant Interviews. Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 6aThe Maine Shared CHNA was conducted through a collaborative effort among Maine's four largest health-care systems Central Maine Healthcare, Northern Light Health (legal name Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems), MaineGeneral Health, MaineHealth and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an office of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Northern Light Health member organizations participating in the Shared CHNA included Acadia Hospital, Blue Hill Hospital, CA Dean Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center, Inland Hospital, Maine Coast Hospital, Mayo Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Sebasticook Valley Hospital, and AR Gould Hospital.
Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 11The data gathered from the 2019 Shared Community Health Needs Assessment (Shared CHNA) informed Northern Light Inland Hospital's Community Health Strategy (Implementation Strategy) developed with input from community stakeholders including those who serve priority populations, the local Public Health District Liaison, local business leaders, and community advocates. Priorities were selected after weighing the severity of each priority area, availability of known and effective interventions, determination that the priority area was un-addressed or under-addressed, and community collaborations underway with Inland Hospital. A hospital task force considered the data and identified areas of significant need including priority concerns, intended actions to address the need, programs and resource allocation, planned collaborations, and population of focus. The implementation strategy was presented and adopted by the Hospital's board of directors. Northern Light Inland Hospital identified four priority areas of focus addressing the significant needs identified in its 2019 CHNA as follows:Physical activity, nutrition, weightActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY20: Let's Go! is an evidence-based, multi-sectoral initiative designed to reduce childhood obesity, with an emphasis on physical activity and healthy nutrition education, policy and environmental change. In Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20), Northern Light Inland Hospital's Let's Go! coordinator met frequently in person with all of our Let's Go! site champions before COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of schools, some childcare sites and out-of-school programs. At that point, we kept sites supported through e-mail and virtual mediums such as Skype or Zoom. A major key to our success in meeting our objective revolved around relationship building, with consistent and persistent communication and support. In addition, holding sites accountable for their action plans by following up and offering support was well appreciated by sites. Follow through by the Let's Go! coordinator with his responsibilities and commitments also served to enhance relationships.Mental healthActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY20: Northern Light Inland Hospital canceled its Adult Mental Health First Aid training, planned for June 1, 2020 due to COVID-19. This training was to be provided by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), allowing us to meet our mental health objective of offering the community two Adult Mental Health First Aid trainings during FY20. We were able to offer the community an Adult Mental Health First Aid training on October 9, 2019 at Educare that was attended by 17 individuals. Despite the setback from COVID-19, we addressed our Mental Health objective by utilizing two alternative strategies to normalize mental health, help recognize signs and symptoms and provide strategies to support those needing support. First, nine Inland Hospital leaders were trained to recognize stress and other mental health challenges with staff and learned tips and tools for providing support. This training was provided through the My Strength Healthy Life Resources program. In addition to the Adult Mental Health First Aid and My Strength Healthy Life Resources programs, we offered a third mental health training opportunity during FY20, helping us exceed our original objective of offering two mental health trainings. Inland Hospital's community wellness coordinator sent information about the live webinar and YouTube link for Northern Light Acadia Hospital's webinar titled Supporting Youth and Families-Managing Stress and Anxiety in the Age of COVID-19 to all of the 28 registered Let's Go! sites in northern Kennebec County, including schools, childcare and out-of-school sites. Many of the sites forwarded the link to caregivers. The live webinar had an audience of 950 people and the YouTube offering added another 1,109 hits, resulting in a total audience of 2,059 participants in this program.Substance useActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY20: Northern Light Inland Hospital intended to make mandatory Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) training a key performance indicator for all primary care providers by September 2020 and was looking to offer MAT in all five primary care practices by March 2020. COVID-19 impacted progress on this initiative. However, we persisted to encourage MAT, despite the pandemic. Though COVID-19 was a factor in not having all primary care providers MAT trained, our persistence paid off in that we met our objective of increasing the number of MAT options for opioid use from three to five sites by 9/30/20.Social determinants of healthActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY20: Northern Light Inland Hospital expanded the number of practices asking patients the two-question food insecurity screening due to conversation and collaboration amongst Northern Light Inland Hospital practice managers, providers, leadership, and Inlands Community Health Navigator. Clinical and support staff, both internally and throughout Northern Light Health, recognize food insecurity as a priority health challenge in our communities.Additional information related to actions taken by Inland Hospital on the above priorities can be found in their FY20 Progress Report to Our Community at https://northernlighthealth.org/2019-Community-Health-Strategy. Northern Light Inland Hospital considered all priorities identified in the Shared CHNA, as well as other sources, through an extensive review process. While the full spectrum of needs is important, Inland Hospital is currently poised to focus only on the highest priorities at this time. A number of priorities not selected, due to a variety of reasons are listed below:Access to Care - This identified health need is not being addressed directly as a strategy born out of our community health needs assessment as our hospital has current initiatives focused on improving access to care such as provider recruitment, the establishment of walk-in care (bridging the gap between primary care and emergency room visits), community health navigators (to link vulnerable populations with needed resources) and other efforts that are ongoing and part of our continual mission to improve access to care. Older Adult Health/Healthy Aging - We decided not to focus on this priority because it is already a focus of another health system in our community, as well as several local agencies, such as Spectrum Generations.

Part VI, Line 4 - Community Building ActivitiesNorthern Light Inland Hospital gets involved and gives back to our community to improve quality of life in Greater Waterville it's how we help fulfill our community service mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve. Whether it's sponsoring scholarships to the local colleges, supporting physical activity and nutrition initiatives in our local schools, funding local public transportation, or supporting a cultural or economic development effort, Northern Light Inland Hospital is proud to support and collaborate with groups that foster health and well-being. While the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our abilities in 2020, we still found ways to engage and support the communities we serve through board memberships and committee work, community benefit donations, and school connections.
Part VI, Line 5 - Promotion of Community HealthNorthern Light Inland Hospital furthers its exempt purpose by promoting the health of the community through the following grant activity in FY20: Community Health Education: Let's Go! - Mini grants for enrolled schools and childcare programs Social and Environmental Improvement Activities: JTG - Support the provision of on-site food, food security resources, and transportation vouchers to primary care patients at Northern Light Inland Hospital. At Northern Light Inland Hospital, we strive to live up to our non-profit mission every day by caring for community members who otherwise would have limited access to quality healthcare. Besides providing charity care and financial assistance, we believe we can also affect the health of the communities we serve beyond the walls of our hospital and medical practices. We agree with the World Health Organization which states, Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. We have a vision to be a responsible corporate citizen whose actions can impact our community's overall well-being through commitments to priority issues. A hospital task force considered priority issues from the Community Health Needs Assessment and other data, and identified areas of significant needs to be addressed, as well as areas of need unable to be addressed by the hospital. An Implementation Strategy was developed and consisted of actions the hospital took to address the health need. Programs/resources the hospital committed to address the health need were identified along with planned collaborations with other area organizations. Northern Light Inland Hospital focused on four key areas: Physical Activity, nutrition, weight; Mental health; Substance abuse; Social determinants of health. In addition to efforts led by Northern Light Inland Hospital and our collaborating partners on the issues above through our Community Health Strategy, resources such as in-kind staff time and community benefit funding were dedicated to the following secondary issues:-Domestic Violence-Homelessness-Economic development-Education-Cultural supportNorthern Light Inland Hospital's 2020 Community Wellness initiatives included:a) We continued to dedicate Community Wellness Coordinator staff time to provide Let's Go! technical support to local schools, after-schools, and childcare sites. Let's Go! is an evidence-based childhood obesity prevention program that focuses on promoting good nutrition, physical activity, less screen time and more water consumption/less sugary drinks. b) We also utilized the Let's Go! program in the healthcare sector. Four out of Northern Light Inland Hospital's six Let's Go registered practices were recognized in 2019 for their efforts to curb childhood obesity in our patient populations. Components of the program include displaying posters with the 5210 healthy habits messages, tracking weight classification for patients ages 2-18, and using the Healthy Habits survey at all well-child visits to inspire respectful conversations around weight status and lifestyle behaviors. c) We continued to maintain the Inland Woods Trail on the hospital campus (created in 2010) with support from several local organizations. The trails were developed to create a lasting way to impact health, and give residents an easy, free resource for regular activity. The trails are used regularly by residents, hospital staff, and local schools for walking, biking, and snowshoeing. The Trailhead was enhanced by adding a family-friendly Little Free Library in 2017.d) We provided ongoing support for the Quarry Road Recreation Area to support event and youth program sponsorships, and in-kind contributions of staff volunteer hours and board participation. e) Northern Light Inland Hospital provided the following Community Benefit funding to local non-profit organizations in 2020: Spectrum Generations/Meals on Wheels - $5000 Children's Discovery Museum - $5000 Central Maine Growth Council/economic development - $5000 Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter - $2000 Kennebec Valley Community Action Program Transportation Program - $3000 Family Violence Project - $2000 Thomas College - $2500 Kennebec Valley Community College - $2500 Maine Children's Home - $2000 Waterville Opera House - $5000 Hospice Volunteers of Waterville - $1000 Waterville Creates - $5000 REM - $1000 $10,000 to 19 local schools to support the Let's Go! program thanks to a grant from Maine Prevention Servicesf) We employ a full-time Community Health Navigator to help patients connect to local resources that help them overcome barriers to good health, such as housing, medication support, transportation, food support, and health care access. In 2020, our Navigator managed a project with the Good Shepard Food Bank to provide food bags to Inland Hospital patients who were identified during hospital or primary care visits to face immediate food insecurity.A majority of Northern Light Inland Hospital's board of trustees is comprised of people who reside in our primary service area who are neither employees nor independent contractors of the organization, nor family members thereof. Northern Light Inland Hospital extends medical staff privileges to qualified physicians in its community for some or all of its departments or specialties. The Northern Light Inland Hospital Foundation helps by raising funds for everything from capital expansion projects to residential activities to help offset normal operating expenses.Northern Light Inland Hospital utilizes surplus funds to support a medical simulation center on the hospital campus that is used for training of clinical staff. Examples of training include Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Training is not limited to employees at Northern Light Inland Hospital - we also offer courses to local Emergency Medical Technicians and to clinicians at other hospitals in our region. Northern Light Inland Hospital invites men, women, and young adults to volunteer their time to further the hospital's mission. The pandemic impacted the amount of time volunteers from our community were allowed to volunteer and/or chose to participate. The number of donated hours to Inland Hospital in 2020 was 5,099. Some volunteers work in areas with direct contact with patients and families; others are involved in behind the scene activities, which enhance the care provided by the hospital. In 2020, Northern Light Inland and Northern Light Continuing Care, Lakewood employees engaged in our community by volunteering on 20+ local boards, committees and projects that helped contribute to a vital community.
Part VI, Line 6 - Affilated Health Care SystemThe 2019 Maine Shared Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) was conducted by Northern Light Health in collaboration with several member/affiliated hospitals and the many public health and community organizations across the state. The Maine Shared CHNA informs initiatives to promote community health across the system as well as within each member hospital's local service area. Each member hospital adopted a local implementation strategy referred to as a Community Health Strategy and annual community health improvement plans, tailored to meet local needs.Northern Light Inland Hospital has been part of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems d/b/a Northern Light Health (NLH) since 1998. As part of EMHS, we conduct Shared Community Health Needs Assessment in collaboration with several member/affiliated hospitals and many public health and community organizations across eight Maine counties.

We faced a global pandemic that took the lives of more than 500,000 of our fellow Americans and more than 2.5 million people worldwide and counting. We also faced deadly wildfires and hurricanes, racial unrest, and a country divided by politics. But during this turbulent time, we also saw the very best in people, including those whom we work alongside every day to deliver compassionate healthcare to the people of Maine. We saw our colleagues rise to the challenges of an unprecedented global pandemic, show courage in the face of adversity, and make selfless sacrifices to heal the sick and protect our communities. These people are heroes. They are the front line workers who provided direct patient care to those who became infected with coronavirus. They are also the people who worked behind the scenes to ensure our staff had the personal protective equipment and telehealth technology they needed to continue to provide care safely. They are the support staff that cleaned and disinfected rooms, prepared meals, and countless other tasks to support our direct care workers. In this year's annual report, we celebrate these heroes. They may not have flashy costumes or superpowers like the comic book heroes or those in Hollywood films. But like those heroes, they must don masks as they face a genuine and dangerous enemy. In the pages of this year's annual report, you will learn more about who they are and what they do. We will take you behind their masks to discover the true identity of the heroes among us. Timothy J. Dentry, MBA President & CEO Kathy Corey Northern Light Health, Board Chair HEROES ON THE FRONT LINES When it comes to caring for sick patients, Northern Light Health's front line staff put themselves at risk to provide exceptional care. We know they are brave and compassionate people, but COVID-19 has shown how far they are willing to go to help others. The following are a few of the many examples of courage and caring that we witnessed during this global pandemic. Cathy Bean, RNManager of Clinical and Community Health Services Northern Light Home Care & Hospice In late March, Portland saw a spike in the population of homeless people who were getting sick with COVID-19. To help protect the city's homeless residents, city leaders immediately opened the Portland Expo as an alternative shelter site that would allow them to maintain their shelter capacity while adhering to the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) social distancing guidelines. But how would they separate the healthy population from those with the virus? Cathy Bean, RN stepped up to help. Donning protective gear, she and her staff went into the shelters daily to screen and test the residents. Northern Light Home Care & Hospice also equipped the city of Portland with a telehealth system so home care nurses could provide follow up appointments. As a result, they were able to help shelter residents with other medical conditions that may have been missed. Many of these people, due to COVID-19, were in quarantine, and meals brought outside their door with no one able to check on them. Now, we could get in there and take care of these people, and that's been very rewarding. Cathy Bean, RNElizabeth Bigler, RN Emergency Department Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital Elizabeth Bigler, RN thinks the most significant change to her job since COVID-19 is how much more physically exhausting it has become. She must often wear respirators, hoods, and other personal protective equipment, which can get quite hot and stuffy during a shift in the Emergency Department. Her biggest concern is making sure she doesn't bring this virus into her home. It's why she enters through a basement door, places her clothing directly into the wash, and showers before interacting with her family. My daughter who is eight is a sensitive, insightful soul. And she's had a lot of fears about me getting sick, not being able to see me if I did get sick, or me not coming home. Her daughter wrote her a touching letter one morning, telling her to be safe and that she loved her. She's a really strong little girl. I had to tell her that this is a community effort. I can't not go because it's scary. Some people still need help, and our job as community members is to help them. Elizabeth Bigler, RNJames Jarvis, MDSenior Physician ExecutiveIncident Command, Northern Light Health When Northern Light Health knew COVID-19 would arrive in Maine, James Jarvis, MD was chosen to coordinate the system's response among its member hospitals in addition to coordinating with state and local governments and the other major healthcare systems in Maine. Another unexpected role that Dr. Jarvis fulfilled during the pandemic was to be the primary spokesperson for Northern Light Health for weekly statewide news conferences via Zoom. Several times a week he would convey critical information to members of the media and our communities. One of the pleasant surprises I've had during this time was somebody randomly driving by, lowering their window, and saying, Dr. Jarvis, how are you doing? You always ask how we're doing through TV, we want to make sure you're okay. I teared up a little because, sure it's neat to be recognized, but it was that sense of community that Mainers have to say, we need to make sure you're okay because we appreciate what you're doing. James Jarvis, MDCaroline Joyce, PACNorthern Light Primary Care Northern Light CA Dean Hospital Caroline Joyce loves the outdoors and dreams of retiring in a small rural community where hiking, fishing, and camping abound. She and her husband built their retirement home in Greenville, and she took a job at Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in September of 2019. Little did she realize how good her timing was to move to a rural community before the outbreak of COVID-19. As a primary and acute care provider, she willingly staffed the drive-up screening tent outside CA Dean. She endured wind and rain and snow to screen patients. And, she did all this while her mother, living in a nursing home in another state, was diagnosed with COVID-19. Luckily, my mom experienced mild symptoms, and while I wanted to see her, she was in an area of Massachusetts that was really hit hard by the coronavirus, and I was here seeing patients. I couldn't risk exposing them or my family. Caroline Joyce, PACSue-Anne Hammond, DOMedical Director of Primary CareNorthern Light Mercy Hospital For Dr. Hammond, COVID-19 became personal very quickly as one of her long-time patients, with whom she'd experienced many ups and downs, was among the first in Maine to die of the deadly coronavirus. It was a curve ball, and it felt so unfair, she said. Dr. Hammond was instrumental in setting up the COVID-19 response plan for Northern Light Mercy Hospital, which became a model shared with other Northern Light Health hospitals across the state. The drive-up swab and go tent at Mercy's Fore River campus allowed people to safely and easily get tested for the coronavirus. The plan also included a respiratory tent site in Westbrook to assess whether people with symptoms needed to be admitted to the emergency department or sent home with care instructions. And it included a virtual clinic to keep patients out of hospital and primary care settings through telehealth for follow-up appointments. She worked seven days a week while her children were being schooled at home. She and her husband, also a front line provider, tried to allay their family's fears and correct misinformation in their communities. On the hardest days I still love what I do. I don't feel like I'm a hero; I'm doing what was asked of me and what I chose to do as a doctor. This is a hard time, but I don't think I want to be anywhere else in the middle of all of this. Sue-Anne Hammond, DOJodi Kierstead, RNNurse Manager, Specialty ICU Northern Light AR Gould Hospital As a nurse manager,
