DescOverview 2019 HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS MAC continues to stand on the firm foundation of business leaders and regional partners who have championed our efforts and worked alongside us throughout our 160 years. As much as our history inspires us, I am equally proud of the progress we have made over the past five years. We moved from being an events-focused Chamber to embracing a strategic approach with a shared focus on three key areas: grow (economic development), advocate (public policy) and promote (marketing, communications and sporting events). And, we did this while embracing a clearer vision of our role in advancing the region: MAC is a regional Chamber whose effectiveness lies in its ability to connect, convene and collaborate as credible representatives of our business community. Our success in 2019 reflects this mindset and is evidence of our regions position as a knowledge capital, our history of uncovering innovative solutions, our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the Chambers forward-thinking worldview. More important, our results reflect our commitment to next- generation leadership a necessary component as we work to make metro Atlanta a more vibrant and prosperous region. Key examples of our impact include: - Launching Project Plato where MAC brought together nearly 100 multigenerational and multicultural leaders representing a cross-section of industries to shape its next strategic plan; - Rebooting ChooseATL this fall with a new look, multicultural approach and refreshed message that will be laser-focused on capturing the attention of both Gen Z and millennial talent; - Advancing Backed by ATL, an initiative that helps middle-market growth companies accelerate growth and fuel economic impact, by building a strong community of next-gen businesses that will be the future tech leaders of the region and world; and - Securing major sporting events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and driving metro Atlantas growing esports ecosystem for continued economic impact and global visibility for the region. Detailed Results Grow: Collaborating with regional partners to drive economic impact, job creation and continued ecosystem expansion. - Met with 556 Atlanta-based companies and 430 companies outside of Georgia resulting in over 11,300 incremental new jobs. - Joined our state, local and utility partners in announcing major projects like: CarMax (new customer experience center in Peachtree Corners); Chick-fil-A (first company-owned distribution facility in Cartersville); Invesco (acquisition of Oppenheimer Fund and a new headquarters in Midtown Atlanta); and Stitch Fix (a 900-person distribution facility in Douglasville). - Created the Atlanta Regional Federal Opportunity Zone Prospectus of development opportunities in the newly created zones around the region. - Merged the three largest bioscience entities (Georgia Bio, Global Health ATL and Georgia Global Health Alliance) to strengthen our global health initiatives as one organization. - Launched the nation's first dedicated esports marketing and economic development entity within a city sports council - the Atlanta Esports Alliance - to bid on and manage major esports and gaming activations from around the world. - Launched the Creative Industries Roundtable to bring together disparate pieces of the creative landscape that weren't necessarily working together, to help build a sustainable ecosystem. - Recruited and secured Smart City Expo Atlanta for the next three to five years, the first and only North American edition of Smart City Expo World Congress, the leading smart cities conference in the world. - Led and executed the largest economic development export initiative in metro Atlanta: Metro Export Challenge (MEC), providing and managing $5,000 grants to 30 companies throughout the region that employ 2,500 and are expanding internationally. - Positioned MAC as the region's international thought leader for foreign direct investment, keynoting more than 20 U.S. investment seminars around the world. - Positioned MAC's economic research as a ready resource for partners, investors, media and other key audiences. - Produced metro Atlanta research deliverables to support telling metro Atlanta's story with up-to- date facts. - Launched Project Plato to convene business leaders from the region to have curated discussions about the next generation of Atlanta. Nearly 100 multi-generational and multicultural leaders were engaged in these discussions focused on the future of Atlanta and inclusive innovation. - Completed an innovation ecosystem assessment with Accenture. Interviews from more than 120 stakeholders were combined with quantitative data to help identify key strategies to accelerate a unique, dynamic and inclusive innovation community with a focus on inclusive capital. - Launched and promoted an integrated innovation narrative for our region to amplify Atlanta's visibility in the innovation ecosystem. - Expanded Backed by ATL by five companies while introducing robust programs that help these fast growing, mid-market companies. Advocate: Working to maintain a business-friendly climate for all people. - Worked throughout the 2019 legislative session to promote pro-business legislation, oppose discriminatory legislation and protect Georgia's reputation as the #1 state for doing business. - Advanced legislation that puts computer science classes in every middle and high school by 2030 and funds computer science training for teachers. - Extended HOPE scholarship eligibility from 7-10 years. - Supported legislation that streamlines the deployment of small cell and 5G technology across Georgia. - Hosted Governor Brian Kemp, Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, Speaker David Ralston, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and their chiefs of staff for the NYSE bell ringing for Super Bowl LIII. - Launched a District Discovery program ensuring connections with elected officials occur in their districts. - Partnered with GEEARS to produce the Advancing Opportunities report and companion video focused on solutions for Georgia's child care challenges. - Released the Metro Atlanta Talent Pipeline Report providing insights into students' aptitude and interest in high-demand career fields. - With support from the Atlanta Sports Council, launched a one-day policy conference, which focused on the regional impact of major sporting events and opportunities over the next decade. - Created a new collective sustainability effort with regional partners and businesses to gain more traction in our region's sustainability efforts and amplify existing initiatives. Promote: Telling Atlanta's remarkable story to the world. - Won the bid to host the 2021 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. - Partnered with the public policy team to launch a one-day conference, which focused on the regional impact of major sporting events and the opportunities over the new decade. - Organized and hosted Super Bowl LIII and successfully leveraged the event to tell Atlanta's story at scale. MAC guided messaging that was adopted by the Super Bowl LIII host committee and its 30,000 volunteers through www.ATLBrandBox.com. We launched a press and social media blitz in partnership with organizations around the region and, as a result, tracked a total of 7.4 billion impressions on social media that included "Super Bowl + Atlanta" from January 26 - February 5. - Brought increased sophistication to leveraging MAC's digital channels to reach and engage critical audiences - talent, CXOs, civic leaders and others. We wrapped the year with a 50% increase in our combined social media following (MAC and ChooseATL) and positive increases in users across our web sites. These facts underscore the utility in the information and tools MAC is providing its stakeholder and our marketing and communications team's know-how. - Leveraged our 160th annual meeting to position MAC as a driving force in our region. With billboards, an ad in the AJC and strong content during our "deconstructed" two-part annual meeting experience, we introduced our strategic approach focused on the next generation, including a reboot of ChooseATL, the launch of Project Plato, advancing Backed by ATL and securing major sporting events, while highlighting MAC's rich history and our ongoing focus on careers, community and culture. - Took Atlanta on the road to SXSW for the fourth and final year, including 23 speakers, 9 musical acts, 12 world-class brands, more than 1 million accounts reached using #ChooseATL and 3.6 million impressions on social media that included "SXSW + Atlanta." 2019 partners included Georgia Power, Coca-Cola and Porsche. - Doubled-down on the in-market initiative that has proven to yield the strongest impact and drive our mission to attract and retain talent: ChooseATL After 5. This year marked the program's fourth consecutive year, bringing together more than 1,000 interns to experience Atlanta through six immersive, culturally rich experiences. 2019 corpDesc
