| Desc | Founded in 1898, ASTM International provides a forum for a broad range of international stakeholders to come together to create and revise voluntary consensus standards. These standards serve as building blocks of international trade, product quality, and public safety, ultimately helping ASTM International achieve its mission of helping our world work better. These standards are developed by more than 34,000 members worldwide, who represent large and small businesses, government entities, academia and research, consumer groups, and other stakeholders. ASTM International also offers ways for business and industry to better use standards through training, certification programs, laboratory proficiency testing, and more. The following are examples of how ASTM International members and staff support our mission by developing voluntary consensus standards and through other activities and offerings. Standards Development that Supports Innovation Across Many Industries: At the core of ASTM Internationals mission is the development of standards that positively impact public health and safety, consumer confidence, and overall quality of life. In 2019, the stakeholders in ASTM Internationals 148 technical committees created more than 150 new standards to support emerging technologies, consumer safety, the environment, and other areas. A small sampling of new and/or revised standards from 2019 includes those related to: -Bulletproof police doors -Cannabis -Clothing storage unit safety -Commercial spaceflight -Correctional facility security fencing -Hayride attractions -Infant bathers -Isolation gowns -Metal detector assessment -Oil spill prevention and cleanup -Portable fuel containers -Radiological decontamination -Recovered carbon black -Remote ID for drones -Safety in nuclear facilities -Spinal implant inspection -Surgical implant safety, and much more. Also in 2019, ASTM International launched its second center of excellence, focused on accelerating exo technology, which could lead to breakthroughs in industries ranging from ergonomics to safety. Certification, Proficiency Testing, and More: The Safety Equipment Institute, the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory, and the Test Monitoring Center constitute important affiliates/collaborators of ASTM Internationals mission to meet industrys needs for services surrounding our standards. -The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), an ASTM International affiliate, operates independent certification programs that test and certify thousands of safety and protective products. In 2019, the list of SEI certified products continued to grow, with the addition of new standards for recreational products and law enforcement. The USDA BioPreferred Certification Program, administered by SEI, certified 369 products, added more than 50 companies, and received nearly 200 new applications. The program has now certified more than 3,500 products. -The Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) program improves construction-materials testing through lab assessments, proficiency samples, instruction, guidance, and clarification of standards. For example, CCRLs Proficiency Sample Program helps labs compare their results with others by testing samples of the same material. In 2019, this program shipped over 21,500 boxes (455 tons) of samples to 1,750 laboratories worldwide. -The Test Monitoring Center provides worldwide calibration services for more than 45 test methods that evaluate automotive lubricants. Reference oil distribution, test stand calibration, and laboratory visits form the core of the centers mission. Leading Globally: ASTM Internationals standards are used by industry and governments around the world. Since 2001, its Memorandum of Understanding Program with national and regional standards bodies helps signatories enhance their own standards programs and encourages global participation in the development of new and revised standards. This in turn helps partners address regulatory, procurement, and economic objectives. In 2019, the signing of three new MOUs brought the total number of such agreements to 114. In 2019, ASTM International launched its first-ever chapter, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The chapter will increase UAE involvement in standards-related activities and events, including those focused on the regions specific needs. ASTM International also trains professionals around the world in the application of its standards. In 2019, ASTM Internationals Visiting Experts Program hosted representatives from Guyana, Nigeria, and Taiwan. ASTM International President Katharine Morgan signed the United Nations Economic Commission for Europes Declaration on Gender Responsive Standards and Standards Development. The effort focuses on improving gender balance in standards development activities as well as ensuring that content of standards is gender responsive. The Next Generation: Todays students and young professionals are tomorrows leaders. ASTM International is committed to educating and mentoring these young people in how consensus standards are developed, as well as their significance and use. -ASTM International trained its 100th Emerging Professional in 2019. The program provides financial support for promising young technical committee members to attend committee meetings, where they receive one-on-one mentoring and a comprehensive introduction to standards development. -ASTM International has an extensive Academic Outreach Program that empowers professors with tools for using standards in their curricula and provides students with educational and scholarship opportunities, including the annual awarding of four graduate scholarships of $10,000 each. Corporate Citizenship and Community Support: ASTM International is committed to being both a supportive neighbor to local nonprofit organizations as well as a good global citizen through financial and in-kind donations and the investment of many staff members time. Highlights of our extensive support program include: -Cradles to Crayons ASTM International staff visited Cradles to Crayons Philadelphia and assisted in packing toys and clothes, separating clothing for storage, and preparing backpacks for the 2019-2020 school year. Cradles to Crayons serves over 245,000 children each year. -Hygiene Kits Dozens of ASTM International staff volunteered to pack more than 300 hygiene kits for children and families affected by poverty, homelessness, or natural disasters. Each kit included personal care products and a note of encouragement from a staff member. -Franklin Institute - ASTM International supported the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, focusing on support for student programs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). -Riverbend Environmental Education Center - ASTM International continued its financial support for Riverbend Environmental Education Center by sponsoring field trips for local elementary schools and other programming. -Staff-Driven Philanthropy - ASTM International supported many staff-driven efforts to raise funds for organizations in 2019, including Girls on the Run, Alzheimers Foundation, Special Olympics, and more. About ASTM International: ASTM International provides a global forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevance, ASTM standards are used in research and development, product testing, codes, and quality systems. Combined with our innovative business services, ASTM standards are a critical element of the information infrastructure that guides manufacturing and trade in the global economy. ASTMs membership comprises more than 34,000 technical experts from over 140 countries. These technical experts serve on one or more of ASTMs 148 technical committees, developing standards for a broad range of areas including metals, plastics, textiles, infrastructure, construction, aviation, energy, the environment, consumer products, 3D printing, services, medical devices, and much more. ASTM International maintains over 13,000 active standards. ASTM International also helps generate and disseminate technical standards and related information through online platforms as well as various specialized publications such as journals, manuals, and monographs, as well as continuing technical education and training programs for industry, government, and other stakeholders. | Desc |
