MissionThe mission of the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy is to bring together leadership from the business, labor, community, and environmental sectors with elected and appointed officials in roundtable forums concerning the fundamental environmental and economic infrastructure issues in California. The participants engage in two day conferences for experts and decision makers focused on educating and developing consensus on complex yet critical issues of the day. The roundtable discussions are designed to maximize the exchange of facts and opinions with one another to learn and ideally find common ground on the complex tradeoffs involved in implementing various public policy options. Working with members of our large and diverse Board of Directors, project participants, and elected officials, CFEE monitors the major issues related to energy, water, transportation infrastructure, and information and communication technolgy (ICT).MissionDesc

DescCFEE conducts public policy discussion forums to facilitate a free and open exchange of views between top regulatory and elected officials, industry executives, labor, consumer and environmental leaders, and academic experts. Conference topics in 2018 included:Energy SummitThis conference took stock of California's energy accomplishments while exploring vulnerabilities that are in need of policymaker attention. Conference sessions explored California's remarkably successful energy story and considered how to continue this success under the eyes of the global community that are now watching to see how California progresses as we enter the most technically daunting and structurally uncertain phase of the ongoing energy transition. Topics included: grid management, power market structures, the role of oil and gas in a renewable future, and energy lessons from other jurisdictions.Technology and Communications Roundtable ConferenceThis conference examined overarching technology, privacy and communications issues facing policymakers and explored actions industry leaders, consumer groups and other stakeholders can take to ensure that society continues to benefit as the Digital Age evolves. Speakers explained how our Internet, communications infrastructure, and mobile app ecosystem is a complex yet ubiquitous network of networks that has revolutionized the way we live and do business. Conference sessions then explored how to ensure that this network continues to deliver societal and economic benefits in the face of lurking threats including user privacy and Open Internet controversy. Additional topics included hardening the communications system in preparation for large scale disasters such as wildfires, floods and mudslides.Roundtable Infrastructure Conference on Climate FinancingThis conference discussed climate financing, whereby the coordinated power of public and private resources, performance based delivery mechanisms, and integrated planning techniques are leveraged to enable Californians to pragmatically and innovatively adapt our infrastructure and enhance our natural resources to meet the challenges of a changing environment. The conference consisted of a series of short presentations followed by an open discussion on the actions needed to ensure the delivery and financing of resilient infrastructure, from our highways and reservoirs to our schools and hospitals. CFEE Roundtable Conference on California WaterThis conference featured focused dialogue on topics that are ready for policymaker action. To build an optimized system for the 21st century, conference sessions explored how we must adopt the mindset that California is a "developing nation" in need of new investments in infrastructure and human capital, a commitment to sustainable and balanced growth, and the thoughtful alignment of institutions and rules. The conference also included a discussion of how the state can support local communities as they seek to diversify their water supply portfolio to ensure long term sustainability.Desc
