Primary Exempt PurposeThe mission of the Pan-African Family Empowerment & Land Preservation Network is both simple and complex in its scope. In the simplest terms, our mission, among other things, is to empower people of African descent--beginning in the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor of the United States--with the financial, educational, technical, and networking resources necessary to sustain long-term ownership of their ancestral homes and land. We also advocate to strengthen Black families to reach their full potential, and promote global Pan-African unity.PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt

HELP SAVE GULLAH-GEECHEE LAND CAMPAIGN: A. Thanks to a $11,200 donation from the 100+ Women Who Care Hilton Head Island--our largest singleton donation ever--during 2017, we spent a record $37,950.07 on delinquent tax payments, and redemptions of already auctioned property--which prevented the loss of Gullah-Geechee-owned homes and land with an assessed value of $1,045,100, according to tax records in Beaufort, Colleton, Georgetown, and Horry counties! That's more than triple the $12,386 that we spent in 2016. B. We doubled our Service Area from just Beaufort and Colleton counties, by adding Georgetown and Horry counties. C. The number of families that we provided financial assistance to increased from 12 to 14 in 2017. D. And we boosted Community Outreach with the funds provided by our first grant ($600 from the Beverly & Horace Sibley Family Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta)), and our first Employer Matching Gift ($150 from the Open Society Institute in NY.)$37,950$459
2017 INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH PROJECT: Although it's in the continental U.S., the especially dire straits of low-income Gullah families in the Plantersville Community of Georgetown County, SC was selected as our annual International Outreach Project. To save Plantersille Gulllah property valued at S234,500 we spent $13,147.21 of the $37,950.07 listed above for expenditures of the "HELP SAVE GULLAH-GEECHEE LAND CAMPAIGN." Their unique plight--facing the loss of ancestral land that their families have owned since the Civil War and Reconstruction eras over an annual $250 sewerline assessment that many couldn't afford--drew international attention from media outlets, including the BBC. But Their white neighbors were not required to tap into the sewerline, or pay the extra $250 assessment on their property tax bills. Protests over the $250 tax burden were led on the steps of the SC Statehouse by Plantersville native Rev. Ben Grate, a African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) minister.$0$205
FIRST ANNUAL STAND4LAND TAXPAYER EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP: In partnership with St. John's Lutheran Church, we held our First Annual STAND4LAND TAXPAYER EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP, on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church. The free, public 8-hour event was our first major combined public service/community service/community outreach project. Workshop attendees were provided with free note taking supplies donated by the Beaufort, SC Walmart Superstore, and tote bags and other giveaways were provided by the Diversity Outreach Program of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. And an cost free lunch was co-sponsored by St. john's Lutheran Church, Don Brashears Owner of Atlantic Realty on Hilton Head Island, and Jason P. Robinson of the ADR and Happy Taxi companies. Events attendees saw presentations by & received handouts from Beaufort County tax officials; the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation; the Beaufort County Black Chamber; the USDA; and SC Legal Services, etc$0$715
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING & REFERRAL SERVICES: In addition to the PAFEN literature distributed during the STAND4LAND TAXPAYER EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP, we disseminated over 1.500 pieces of literature property tax issues and resources to ensure long-term ownership of property during 2017. We also partnered with the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce to provide free budgeting, debt reduction, and credit repair classes for our clients, ahead of preparing them to enroll in the Beaufort County Installment (Property Tax) Payment Program. The program allows taxpayers of all races to pre-pay their property taxes in 6 payments spread over 12 months. It prevents the possibility of property being lost due to delinquent taxes, if all the payments are made as scheduled. Taxpayers will also never again be charged late fees and penalties once enrolled in the Installment Program. We also made more than 100 referrals for assistance to the Center for Heirs Property Preservation, etc.$0$0
