DescEducation. The ongoing education of Mercy staff members is critical in the fast-changing field of health care and is necessary to meet regulation and certification. Mercy hosts a number of professional continuing education conferences each year, attended by its own staff along with staff from other institutions. In addition, Mercy provides a setting for many students who are considering or pursuing health care careers. For high school students, a health careers class gives students insight into possible careers and options; it also prepares students for the certified nursing assistant exam. Mercy works with students from health education programs that include the University of Iowa, Kirkwood Community College and other local colleges, offering such options as a paid summer nursing internship program, a lab student.Desc

Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, IowaPart V, Section B, Line 5: The hospital conducted two focus groups with participants from these organizations, representing broad and deep knowledge of community health needs:- 4 Cs Community Coordinated Child care- City of North Liberty- Community Foundation of Johnson County- Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce- Iowa City Area Development Group- Iowa City Free Medical Clinic- Johnson County Ambulance- Johnson County Public Health Department- Johnson County Senior Center- Johnson County Sheriff's Office- Mercy Clinics- Mercy Pediatric Clinic- Mercy Physician Hospital Organization- Oaknoll Adult Retirement Community- St. Patrick's Catholic Church- United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties
Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, IowaPart V, Section B, Line 11: The 2015 CHNA summarized twelve areas of opportunity for Community Health Improvement. Mercy Hospital is addressing those needs as follows:Access to Primary Care Physicians:Mercy will continue to operate a primary care clinic in Cedar county. Mercy will also continue to support the Free Medical Clinic in the adjacent Johnson county. This is an important health care access point for those with limited ability to pay. Mercy has a long tradition of having staff members volunteer their time and Mercy will continue to request their services.Cancer - Cancer Incidence:Mercy has a cancer committee that strives to deliver patient centered care as measured in the cancer program standards of 2016. With the assistance of that committee, Mercy intends to develop a lung cancer screening program that will promote and administer screenings for at-risk patients.Environmental Health - Particulates:We intend to take no action as controlling the particulate counts are not within the scope of our health care delivery system.General Health - Self Reported:We will continue to support the Blue Zone activities as a certified Blue Zones employer.Heart Disease & Stroke Mortality Rates:Mercy is certified as a primary stroke center and will strive to maintain that certification. In addition, Mercy has recently hired a cardiologist that will add to our capacity to treat patients with heart disease.Injury & Violence - Violent Crime RateWe intend to take no action as reducing the crime rate is not within the scope of our health care delivery system.Maternal, Infant, & Child Health - Preterm and Teen Births: Two indicators were identified in two counties: teen births and pre-term births. Mercy intends to increase the number of family practice providers practicing in a clinic located in one of these affected counties. This should elevate patients' ability to access health care resources directly or through the referral sources the patient will be directed to from this clinic.Mental Health - Depression and Social Support:Mercy will maintain and possibly expand an outpatient psychiatric clinic available to patients regardless of their insurance. In addition, Mercy will continue to offer inpatient mental health services at our Johnson county hospital.Nutrition, Physical Activity & Weight - Adult Obesity and Limited Food Access:Mercy will develop a non-surgical weight loss program open to the public and run by dieticians employed by Mercy.Sexually Transmitted Disease:Mercy will develop a program aimed at decreasing the incidence of sexually transmitted infections in and around Johnson county.Social Determinants - Single Parent Households, High Housing Costs, On-Time High School Graduation:We intend to take no action as we have no meaningful control of these factors within our health care delivery system.Substance Abuse - Binge DrinkingWe intend to take no action as we have no meaningful control of these factors within our health care delivery system.

Part I, Line 7:Amounts in the table were derived using a cost accounting system that addresses all patient segments. A cost to charge ratio derived from completing IRS worksheet 2 was used to determine the amounts in Part I, Line 7a, 7b, 7c. and 7g.
Part I, Ln 7 Col(f):Bad debt expense of $2,817,739 was subtracted for purposes of calculating the percentage in Schedule H, Part I, Line 7, column (f).
Part II, Community Building Activities:Economic Development:Mercy works with such groups as the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce and Iowa City Area Development Group to support the business community, welcome innovation to the area, and develop the workforce. Community Support:Mercy has provided support to United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties for more than 30 years, holding a campaign every fall to support it. Mercy also supports financially and with colleague time, community agencies such as Iowa City Hospice, Free Medical Clinic, NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill), American Cancer Society, School-Based Health Clinics located in three of the Iowa City Community School Districts public schools, and so on. Mercy also provides staff to provide first aid at community festivals such as Arts Fest, Jazz Fest and Soul Fest, and at the Johnson County Fair.Mercy continues to be a community leader in ensuring that fewer people experience food insecurity within Johnson County and the State of Iowa. Mercy contributes regularly to Table to Table, a local organization that collects wholesome, edible food from donors (grocery stores, restaurants, and Mercy Iowa City) and redirects it to food pantries and meal sites in the county. Mercy is also a lead organization for Thanksgiving in July, an annual summer food drive whose goal is to fill food pantries at a time of year when they have fewer donations and children are out of school, not receiving free and reduced breakfast and lunch. This program was started at Mercy Iowa City in 1995 and has grown to include many other sites in the State of Iowa including Des Moines, Dubuque and the Quad Cities.Environmental Improvements:Mercy has been a good neighbor by maintaining its buildings and landscaping at a high level. Mercy also pursues extensive recycling (including newspapers, office paper, magazines, plastics, batteries, cooking oil, construction materials and more) and programs that reduce energy consumption. Mercy is expanding its recycling program to make it easier for colleagues and visitors to participate throughout the hospital.Leadership Development and Training of Community Members:Mercy lends support to the annual Community Leadership Program of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, a nine-month leadership development program for 24 individuals who are increasing their professional and personal commitment to the community. Mercy sponsors a class member each year and participates actively in the health care day of education. Mercy also supports an active Clinical Ladder program for nurses, offers Continuing Education Credit (CEU) courses and conferences open to medical professionals across the State on a regular basis, such as those tailored to Emergency Care, Hospitalist care and Nursing care. Mercy also offers a location for CEU courses for the local Honoring Your Wishes initiative which encourages all adults to have Advance Directives that are current and reflect their wishes. The CEU courses train individuals to become certified counselors to help individuals with their Advance Directives, and to train certified counselors to assist with IPOST which is the Iowa version of the national POLST directive, a medical order for those with terminal conditions. Honoring Your Wishes is the program used at Mercy, and the hospital offers free assistance to anyone in its service area who needs it to complete their documents.Coalition Building:Mercy is involved in many ways with local citizens and groups that are working to afford all members of our community a good quality of life and to improve overall quality of life. Mercy is a co-sponsor of the Johnson County SAFE Kids Coalition whose mission is to prevent or reduce preventable injuries to children from birth to age 14. SAFE Kids promotes the correct use of child safety restraints in vehicles, bicycle helmets, and safety education to prevent falls, burns, poisoning and more. Mercy is also a lead partner of Safety Village, a two-week summer safety camp for children aged 5-7 held in a miniature village on the grounds of one of our local elementary schools. Each summer, 200 children participate in classes and safety education with local EMS, police, sheriffs and others.Mercy is also a lead partner in a new Health and Rural Safety of Eastern Iowa initiative which works to reduce preventable injuries in the agricultural community such as heavy equipment, large animal, pesticides and more. This partnership also seeks to increase health screenings and referrals to primary and specialty care for this population, that includes Anabaptist, and provide education to improve health. Some of this is accomplished through youth safety camps, FFA (Future Farmers of America) and 4-H programs, county fairs, community events and in cooperation with churches.

For individuals not providing necessary information, it is impossible to know the reason for not cooperating and therefore know whether they will qualify for charity care. Part III, Line 4:Mercy Hospital's Audited Financial Statements includes a footnote for the Provision of Uncollectible Accounts on page 11 and 12 of the Audited Financial Statements.
