MissionFounded in 1917, the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) is the trade association representing all American music publishers and their songwriting partners. Its mission is to protect, promote, and advance the interests of music's creators. The NMPA is the voice of both small and large music publishers, and is the leading advocate for publishers and their songwriter partners in the nation's capital and in every area where publishers do business. The goal of NMPA is to protect its members' property rights on the legislative, litigation, and regulatory fronts. In this vein, the NMPA continues to represent its members in negotiations to shape the future of the music industry by fostering a business environment that furthers both creative and financial success. The NMPA has remained the most active and vocal proponent for the interests of music publishers in the U.S. and throughout the world, a continuing tradition of which the association is very proud.MissionDesc

DescLegal - Since its inception, NMPA has engaged in myriad legal activities meant to support its member music publishers and their songwriter partners. NMPA currently employs a legal team consisting of three attorneys and one paralegal, with its General Counsel, Danielle Aguirre, overseeing the department. NMPA also hires legal interns from area law schools on a semester-by-semester basis. NMPA engages in litigation, negotiation and settlement on behalf of its members to protect and enforce copyrights and intellectual property interests of songwriters and music publishers and to fight piracy and infringement. During the relevant period, NMPA finalized and announced settlements with YouTube, Rhapsody and MediaNet for unpaid royalties due to NMPA's music publisher members. As part of its litigation program, NMPA also drafts and participates in amicus curiae for federal and state cases to support the legal goals of its members. NMPA more recently has begun to work with companies and digital services that use music to ensure that publishers and songwriters are being fairly compensated, negotiating model industry licenses in which its members can voluntarily participate, which have enabled publishers and songwriters to be paid for the use of their songs. Recent model licenses offered to NMPA members during the period of January 1 through June 30, 2017 include those for digital services Genius, Rhapsody and SoundCloud. Since 2006, NMPA has run an anti-piracy program which is operated entirely in-house. Under this program, NMPA serves as an agent for its members in effecting DMCA-compliant takedowns of its publishers' musical works on unlicensed lyrics, sheet music, and streaming sites and has expanded to target unlicensed apps and ringtones in the iTunes and GooglePlay stores. NMPA also represents publishers and songwriters in their fight for fair royalty rates under Section 115 and Section 118 of the Copyright Act. During 2017, NMPA represented music publishers in a Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) proceeding for the Section 115 Determination of Rates and Terms for Making and Distributing Phonorecords (Phonorecords III). Finally, NMPA engages on the legal policy level with the Copyright Office, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Department of Justice and other Congressional and Administrative agencies. NMPA was also engaged with the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice concerning its review of the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees.Desc

DescCommunications and Public Relations:--Communications: NMPA seeks to utilize the media to promote knowledge about the challenges songwriters face in the Digital Age. These efforts include press releases, regular opinion editorials in trade and national magazines, newspapers and online platforms, as well as pitching coverage of publisher and songwriter issues for television, radio and special coverage. NMPA also serves as a resource to music industry PR executives across the country on the matters of industry research and general music publishing information.--Social Media: NMPA has built and manages daily a Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter presence to engage consumers, lawmakers and music industry executives in its activities and promote NMPA objectives. NMPA regularly promotes its events and positions on these platforms. -- WEBSITE (WWW.NMPA.ORG): NMPA maintains a public website to display its efforts on the regulatory, litigation, advocacy and PR fronts. The website contains information about NMPA's board structure, staff and the Gold & Platinum Program. It also serves as a portal for membership. -- SONGWRITER RELATIONS: NMPA regularly works with songwriters to hear their concerns, help educate them and amplify our mission. NMPA hosts songwriter events around the country to celebrate the contributions of songwriters and brings songwriters to Capitol Hill to discuss their challenges with lawmakers. Through its Songwriter Advisory Council, email updates and town halls, NMPA is in constant contact with the music creator community to ensure they know we are working on their behalf and to communicate our goals and successes.--Gold & Platinum Program: Each month, NMPA researches the songwriters behind all RIAA-certified hits and alerts and awards the publisher and songwriter of these songs, which entails working with each publisher to confirm shares of songwriting credits, designing, ordering and awarding plaques. Events are often created around the awarding of plaques which include honoring the songwriter and their publisher in person. --Annual Meeting: Each Summer, NMPA hosts an Annual Meeting in New York City which brings together all of the top music publishers in the country and around the world. At this event, NMPA honors industry executives who have displayed a commitment to songwriters and have given back to their profession. A keynote is given by NMPA President and CEO David Israelite on the state of the industry each year. The Annual Meeting includes performances by renowned and up-and-coming persons in the music industry.--Songwriter Showcases: Throughout the year, NMPA hosts concerts where songwriters perform the hits they've written and share the stories behind them. These showcases honor music creators and often serve to educate members of Congress and the press on the craft of songwriting. Songwriters who have qualified for NMPA Gold & Platinum awards are presented with their plaques when touring in the D.C. area.Desc

DescMembership - The NMPA has been a membership organization since its inception in 1917. NMPA's membership consists of music publishers and songwriters who are actively engaged in the business of music publishing. In 1917, NMPA (at the time known as the "Music Publishers Protective Association") selected a committee to elect members based on a Class A (initiation fee and dues) and Class B (dues) distinction. Presently, NMPA grants membership to individuals and publishers who are eligible under the NMPA By-Laws. Membership is renewed annually and membership term year runs from July 1 through June 30. Membership dues are based on market share of reported gross U.S. music publishing revenue of the previous calendar year. All members in good standing are eligible to opt into settlements and programs that are available during the membership year and are also eligible to vote for the Board of Directors every other year prior to the NMPA Annual Meeting in New York. The Board of Directors meets four times a year. Members are frequently notified about opportunities, industry developments and other important news on the legislative, judicial and regulatory fronts through press releases and other correspondence. As a 501(c)(6) organization, the NMPA membership structure will remain the same and will continue to operate to serve the interests of its music publisher members.Desc

DescLOBBYING/GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS - Engaging policy makers in Congress and the Executive Branch has always been an important function of the NMPA. Last year, the NMPA was a critical party in the negotiation and drafting of legislation called the Music Modernization Act (MMA), which updates and modernizes federal laws that govern and regulate the music industry. The MMA was introduced in the House of Representatives in December 2017.Desc
