DescCONSUMER MARKETING. The Consumer Marketing program is comprised of the Consumer Marketing Division (Advertising, Public Relations and Strategic Alliances) and the Corporate Strategy and Program Metrics Division (CSPM). The Consumer Marketing Division is tasked with creating awareness of, and interest in, cotton among consumer and trade audiences. This is accomplished through an integrated platform of traditional and digital advertising, engagement with the media, and activities and events that directly contact consumers. The Cotton. Its Your Favorite for a Reason campaign was brought to an end in 2017. The campaign featured real women and men explaining why cotton is their favorite and communicated the physical benefits of the fiber while reminding consumers to check their labels and shop cotton. The Advertising Department launched a new campaign, "Leave Comfort to Clothes," in an effort to create a rallying cry for cotton; connecting with consumers through compelling stories while offering functional benefits and claims. The campaign inspires people to rethink the way they view comfort and challenges them to step out of their comfort zones leaving comfort to clothes; thanks to cotton benefits such as softness, durability, breathability, and versatility. The 360 degree campaign aims to reach consumers through TV, Cottons consumer Web site www.TheFabricOfOurLives.com, digital media, including social and paid search, and point of purchase. Public Relations supported consumer facing corporate initiatives such as the Blue Jeans Go Green program, the Leave Comfort to Clothes advertising campaign and the defense of cotton, in general. The department secured coverage in atypical and desirable media outlets. Some were a result of the Fleishman-Hillard agency, which provides support for consumer-facing media coverage of cotton and Cotton Incorporated, and some were achieved independently by the Public Relations Department. Among these were news items in Food and Wine, Essence.com, and NPR Marketplace (national). The Strategic Alliances department rolled out numerous activities during 2017. Cottons 60 Second Fashion Show launched in September, merging our favorite fiber with fashion and technology to make the purchase journey convenient for consumers. Several Blue Jeans Go Green program collection and distribution activities occurred. Three new retail partnerships launched, and Madewell kicked off their Denim Forever Tour. In December, the recycling program was featured at 29 Rooms in Los Angeles. CSPM led efforts to identify opportunities and threats for cotton using market intelligence data gathered through ongoing studies of consumer attitudes from the Lifestyle Monitor survey, assessments of cottons share at retail through the Retail Monitor research and comprehensive global economic research and analysis. Work completed by CSPM during 2017 includes, but is not limited to, the review of data on more than 135,000 products offered at retail in order to evaluate cottons market share in key categories and to communicate (to internal staff) those areas that are under threat; the evaluation of 7,200 U.S. and 17,000 global consumers to understand key trends and market opportunities for cotton products in the various areas, including sustainability, performance clothing, marketing claims, opportunities for cotton, holiday shopping intentions, and generational shopping habits; the management and analysis of global quantitative research into consumers attitudes toward sustainability and opportunities for cotton; tracking and management of large-scale consumer and retail research in the Chinese market; the management of Cotton Incorporateds program metrics; and the delivery of consumer and economic outlook presentations related to shifts in shopping habits and changes in cotton prices that impact the supply chain in the U.S. and internationally. During 2017, CSPM responded to nearly 200 information requests, participated in 160 meetings and presentations, authored nearly 160 publications, videos, and podcasts, and worked on nearly 30 projects.Desc

DescGLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN MARKETING. The Global Supply Chain Marketing program consists of two divisions: Cotton Management System (CMS) and Global Supply Chain Marketing (GSCM). The Cotton Management System software team continued to support MILLNet 4.8.010 software, which is the final release of the MILLNet 4.0 series. The MILLNet 5.0 software is being used for all new licensee installations, and conversions of existing users is ongoing. The CMS teams assisted customers over 3,700 times during the year and conducted service visits in various countries. Four new EFS System licensees were installed during the year. The GSCM division conducted more than 700 meetings with more than 400 companies in 22 countries during the year. The active and performance apparel market in the U.S. is estimated to be approximately $57 billion at retail and expected to grow an additional 27% in the U.S. market alone by 2020. Outside of the United States, other consumer markets such as China and India, the active apparel market is expected to grow by 47% and 43%, respectively, indicating strong opportunity in this market segment. GSCM staff focused heavily on engagement with top active and performance brands in 2017, working with key active and outdoor brands on product opportunities as well as maintaining connectivity through key Cotton Incorporated programs such as COTTON UNIVERSITY, Importer Support Education workshops, webinars conducted through COTTON UNIVERSITY, while also providing traditional resources such as fabric and technology ideas and trend resources. GSCM staff maintained connectivity and engagement with 16 out of the top 20 active and performance apparel brands, as identified in Sports Insight Magazines September / October 2017 issue. As a continuation of the very successful ACTIVE Cotton Lab Series event held in the Cary headquarters office in March, the GSCM team conducted a second event in August, inviting activewear brands and retailers and additional companies interested in the integration of performance technologies and cotton innovations into their product lines. The August event was attended by 16 different brand and retailer companies, and the program received excellent ratings for the educational content presented, lab tours, outside speakers, and the inclusion of a session on sustainability and responsible cotton production, rated as one of the strongest sessions of the entire workshop. The execution of two ACTIVE Cotton events in 2017 reached a total of 32 different brands and retailers, with participation by many of the top active, performance, and outdoor brands. Efforts in the Cotton LEADS program continued with strong momentum in 2017 with 52 new partners joining the initiative during the year, now totaling over 488 active partners. The platform continues to gain traction among textile supply chain companies and has gained the attention of many brands and retailers seeking to understand the complexities of raw materials. During 2017, GSCM staff worked with brand and retailer accounts to facilitate six new technology introductions at retail. The product introductions were launched during Spring and Fall retail seasons and featured Cotton Incorporateds technology innovations. Additionally, five product adoptions launched in 2015 and 2016 were successfully continued as a result of GSCM staff support. The GSCM staff successfully implemented nine marketing collaborations with outside organizations to help raise awareness and visibility for cotton in the active apparel market, and to illustrate possibilities for combining cotton with other fibers, or materials to enhance cottons performance.Desc

DescAGRICULTURAL RESEARCH. The 2017 year was one of new challenges and rapid responses for U.S. cotton growers. Major challenges to grower profitability arose from the plummeting cottonseed price, the confirmation of Fusarium Wilt Race 4 (FOV4) in Texas and New Mexico, expanding demands for sustainability verification from our textile customers, plastic contamination in cotton bales, off-target movement of herbicides along with expanding weed resistance, and insect resistance to Cry proteins. AERD responded to these by reinstating the cottonseed marketing program, organizing FOV4 germplasm and pathology, creating and presenting the foundation for 10-year sustainability goals, expanding research and education to minimize plastic contamination, launching a new initiative to develop robot cotton harvesters to address contamination, and addressing fiber quality challenges from current harvesters. The program developed a viable plan to limit the Upland cotton losses from Fusarium Wilt Race 4 and secured long term funding for the Cotton Winter Nursery. Variety Improvement cooperators assembled a reference grade Upland genome and released commercial varieties provided by public breeders and tested them in the RBTN. Extension cotton specialists conducted a Beltwide K fertility study that clarified rained versus irrigated cotton needs and continued their large plot replicated variety testing programs. The cottonseed research program submitted the Ultra-Low Gossypol Cottonseed (ULGCS) regulatory package to the FDA and USDA and unified the cottonseed industry around a set of research and promotion initiatives to improve cottonseed value. The cottonseed marketing program re-launched the whole cottonseed promotion program with early positive impact on dairy demand for whole cottonseed. University and farmer cooperators developed a Citizen Scientists Soil Health initiative to develop guidelines for expanding soil health in limited rainfall environments. An industry wide Ag Boundaries meeting was held that led to 10-year sustainability quantitative goals for the cotton industry. Both content and users were expanded for the outreach platform, Cotton Cultivated. Due to the diverse pest challenges faced by cotton growers, regional entomology management programs were implemented with University and USDA cooperators. Contamination problems are being addressed with research to prevent plastic contamination at the harvester and the gin. Ag engineer cooperators released software for RFID tag less module tracking in the field and gin and launched a robot cotton harvester system research and design program. Cooperators created detection tools for bacterial blight, released resistant germplasm, and elevated the need to breed commercial varieties with blight resistance within the planting seed industry. A novel pigweed control strategy was first tested.Desc

ExplanationThe Company is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code, except for any unrelated business income. There was no unrelated business income earned during the years ended December 31, 2017 and 2016, and thus, no provision for income taxes has been made. The Company accounts for uncertainty in income taxes using a recognition threshold of more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by the appropriate taxing authority. Measurement of uncertainty occurs if the recognition threshold has been met. Management believes that there were no uncertain tax positions that met the recognition threshold in 2017 or 2016. The Companys tax returns are open for examination for years 2014 through 2016.ExplanationTxt
