ExplanationLOBBYING ACTIVITIES: A DESCRIPTION OF THE MLA'S LOBBYING EFFORTS IN 2016-17 FOLLOWS. PAULA M. KREBS SERVED ON THE BOARD OF THE NATIONAL HUMANITIES ALLIANCE, ("NHA") FROM 1 AUGUST 2017 TO 31 AUGUST 2017. ROSEMARY G. FEAL, FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SERVED ON THE BOARD OF THE NHA FROM 1 SEPTEMBER 2016 TO 31 JULY 2017. STEPHEN KIDD, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NHA, DID THE DIRECT LOBBYING FOR THE NHA. AS IN THE PAST, THE NHA BOARD MET TO DISCUSS THE NHA'S ADMINISTRATION, STAFFING, BUDGET, AND SUPPORT SERVICES. THE NHA BOARD FORMULATED PLANS FOR EDUCATING NHA MEMBERS AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE AND VALUE OF THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES, ("NEH"), AND OF SCHOLARSHIP IN THE HUMANISTIC DISCIPLINES. KIDD IMPLEMENTED THE ACTIONS THE BOARD RECOMMENDED. HUMANITIES ADVOCACY DAY IS AN ACTIVITY OF THE NHA. THE NHA'S 2017 ANNUAL MEETING AND HUMANITIES ADVOCACY DAY WERE HELD ON MARCH 13-14 IN WASHINGTON D.C. OVER THE TWO DAY PERIOD, 182 ADVOCATES PARTICIPATED IN A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING ADVOCACY TRAINING, AN NEH GRANTS WORKSHOP, A HUMANITIES GRANTS OVERVIEW SESSION, PANEL PRESENTATIONS, A KEYNOTE LUNCHEON, POLICY BRIEFINGS, A CAPITOL HILL RECEPTION, AND VISITS TO CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES. ROSEMARY G. FEAL ATTENDED THE EVENT ON 13 MARCH. KATHLEEN FITZPATRICK, FORMER ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND DIRECTOR OF SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION, ATTENDED BOTH DAYS, AND SHE MET WITH STAFFERS FROM THE OFFICES OF CHARLES SCHUMER, KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND, GRACE MENG, PETER KING, ELIOT ENGEL, AND JERROLD NADLER TO ENCOURAGE THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE NEH AND OTHER RELATED HUMANITIES PROGRAMS. IN 2016-17, THE MLA WAS A MEMBER OF THE COALITION FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION, ("CIE"), AN ORGANIZATION MADE UP OF MORE THAN THIRTY NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION ASSOCIATIONS. THE CIE INFORMS POLICY MAKERS, EDUCATION AND PRIVATE SECTOR OFFICIALS, AND THE MEDIA ABOUT NATIONAL NEEDS IN INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND FOCUSES ON PROMOTING AND SUPPORTING TITLE VI AND FULBRIGHT-HAYS PROGRAMS. IN APRIL 2017, THE MLA SIGNED ONTO THE CIE'S LETTER TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE LEADERSHIP AND THE SENATE AND HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEES AND THEIR SUBCOMMITTEES ON LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, EDUCATION, AND RELATED AGENCIES URGING THEM TO REJECT THE ADMINISTRATION'S PROPOSAL TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE FUNDING FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES PROGRAMS AND TO MAINTAIN FISCAL YEAR 2016 FUNDING LEVELS FOR TITLE VI AND FULBRIGHT-HAYES PROGRAMS IN 2017. THE CIE ALSO REQUESTED A FUNDING INCREASE OF $6.5MM FOR THE SAME PROGRAMS IN 2018. THE MLA ALSO SIGNED ONTO THE CIE'S JULY 2017 LETTER TO THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND THE WORKFORCE AND ITS SUBCOMMITTEE REQUESTING THE REAUTHORIZATION OF TITLE VI OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACT. IN AUGUST THE MLA WORKED WITH THE CIE ON PROPOSALS FOR HEA TITLE VI REAUTHORIZATION AND ON ESTABLISHING PRIORITY IN THE TITLE VI GRANT COMPETITION FOR INSTITUTIONS RECEIVING GRANTS UNDER TITLES III (HBCU) AND V (HSI) OF THE HEA. IN ADDITION, ROSEMARY G. FEAL AND DENNIS LOONEY, DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS AND THE ADFL, PARTICIPATED IN CIE TELECONFERENCES CONCERNING FUNDING FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND OTHER DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS. ON MARCH 9, LOONEY ATTENDED A SERIES OF MEETINGS ON CAPITAL HILL ORGANIZED BY THE CIE. LOONEY JOINED A GROUP OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS FROM INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN NEW YORK WHO MET WITH THE STAFFERS FROM THE OFFICES OF CHARLES SCHUMER, KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND, AND ADRIANO ESPAILLAT AS WELL AS STAFFERS FROM THE OFFICES OF LAMAR ALEXANDER, CHAIR OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH EDUCATION, LABOR, AND PENSIONS. THESE MEETINGS STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION PROGRAMS. IN 2016-17 THE MLA WAS AFFILIATED WITH THE JOINT NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR LANGUAGES, ("JNCL"). THE JNCL REPRESENTS MORE THAN 300,000 PROFESSIONALS AND HAS OVER 100 MEMBERS, INCLUDING NATIONAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE ORGANIZATIONS ENCOMPASSING MOST AREAS OF THE K-16 LANGUAGE FIELD. THE JNCL HOLDS ITS LANGUAGE ADVOCACY DAY AND ANNUAL DELEGATE ASSEMBLY MEETING IN WASHINGTON D.C., WHERE MEMBERS PROMOTE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF LANGUAGE ISSUES. LOONEY ACTED AS MLA'S REPRESENTATIVE TO THE JNCL. HOWEVER, LOONEY DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED BY THE JNCL IN 2016-17.ExplanationTxt

FORM 990, SCHEDULE F, PART I, LINE 2Grant Monitoring: The winners of the Modern Language Association's awards for scholarly publications are chosen by committees appointed by the association's Committee on Honors and Awards, which itself is appointed by the Executive Council. Only members of the MLA may be appointed to committees. The awards committees are made up of established scholars; the members of each committee that decide a specialized award are specialists in the field or fields covered by the award. Prizes are awarded to authors and publishers of print or digital scholarly books and projects, including editions, anthologies, and translations. Works that meet the published criteria for eligibility are submitted to the MLA by authors and publishers and are then forwarded to the relevant awards committees. Members of the committees review all eligible entries, identify the strongest contenders, and confer among themselves until they agree on a winner. The MLA awards $400 stipends to support travel to its annual convention. The stipends are available to graduate students, non-tenure-track faculty members, unemployed members, and regular and life members residing outside the United States and Canada. The MLA issues checks after reviewing and approving travel-expense forms, with receipts attached.

FORM 990, PART III, PROGRAM SERVICES, LINE 1ORGANIZATION'S MISSION: The Modern Language Association of America ("MLA") is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the study and teaching of modern languages and literatures. Founded in 1883, the MLA today serves its 23,022 members through publications, programs, and meetings. It works to advance the interests of the field in the higher education community and among the general public. The association was incorporated on April 5, 1900, by the general assembly of Maryland for "educational, scientific, and social objects and purposes, and more specifically for the promotion of the academic and scientific study of the English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and other so-called modern languages and literatures." The MLA constitution states that the object of the association shall be to promote study, criticism, and research in the more and less commonly taught modern languages and their literatures and to further the common interests of teachers of these subjects.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4APUBLICATIONS AND LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTIONS: The association serves teachers, students, and researchers through its publication program, which includes PMLA, a widely cited scholarly journal, as well as reference works and book series that meet the pedagogical and professional needs of those who study languages and literatures. The MLA International Bibliography is a cornerstone of the MLAs research publications; it is available online and is a unique reference tool for those doing research in the modern languages and literatures, linguistics, rhetoric and composition, pedagogy, and folklore. More than 1,800 educational institutions subscribe to the bibliography. PMLA is one of the oldest and most respected journals in the field. Between September 2016 and August 2017, 311 essays were submitted by MLA members for possible publication in PMLA. In addition to scholarly articles, each year PMLA publishes the program for the MLA Annual Convention. MLA members receive a subscription to PMLA, and 1,537 libraries purchased a print or electronic subscription to the 2017 volumes. For over forty years, the MLA Job Information List (JIL) has facilitated the employment process in the field by listing postsecondary faculty vacancies and making the information available to job seekers whose goal is to teach English or foreign languages and literatures at the postsecondary level. The JIL is published as a digital database of departmental job notices that job seekers can search by field or language, by geographic region, by key words or phrases in job descriptions, and by rank. Access to the JIL database is available free of charge. The MLA compiles and publishes a number of other reference works for humanities teachers, students, and scholars. The MLA Handbook is widely used by undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities and, increasingly, by high school students. During the 201617 fiscal year, the association sold 115,072 copies of the eighth edition, which was released in April 2016. The Approaches to Teaching World Literature series, which currently comprises 145 volumes, serves teachers by providing guidance about presenting various literary works to students; 1,794 copies of these books were sold in fiscal year 201617. The Texts and Translations series, affordably priced for classroom use, publishes both the original text and the English translation of literary works. The fifty-eight volumes in the series sold a total of 3,034 copies in fiscal year 201617. The World Literature Reimagined series, which contains three titles focused on literary history, interpretation, and pedagogy in teaching world literatures, sold a total of 11 copies in fiscal year 201617. The series Teaching Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, which concentrates on examining the ways different languages, literatures, and cultures intersect, contains four titles and sold 13 copies. Another MLA book series, Research and Scholarship in Composition, contains six volumes and sold a total of 9 copies in fiscal year 201617. The Options for Teaching series addresses pedagogical and professional topics of interest to teachers of language and literature. In fiscal year 201617, the forty-two volumes in the Options for Teaching series sold a total of 739 copies. We now offer a sixth of our titles in e-book formats, which are distributed by NetRead to vendors such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble. During fiscal year 201617, sales of our e-book titles averaged $2,177 per month.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4BANNUAL MEETINGS: The principal meeting organized by the association is the MLA Annual Convention. Long a forum for intellectual exchange, this annual gathering brings members together to report on their scholarship, to discuss new information about teaching and other professional issues, and to interview candidates for positions. By providing a forum for scholarly exchange, the convention strengthens work in the field. The 2017 meeting attracted 6,030 registrants. In 1997, the MLA established the Professional Education Assistance Fund to promote the study of modern languages and literatures by providing aid to graduate students to attend the convention; in 2006, it was expanded to provide aid to non-tenure-track faculty members and unemployed members. The fund provided 198 cash awards to qualified students and 47 cash awards to eligible non-tenure-track faculty members and unemployed members to defray their expenses in traveling to and attending the 2017 MLA convention. The MLA also houses the Association of Departments of English (ADE) and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL). The summer seminars sponsored by these organizations bring together administrators of college and university departments of English and foreign languages. The seminars encourage the discussion of common problems and the development of consensus about good practice in writing, literature, and language teaching. At the 2017 ADE and ADFL seminars, 332 participants from 282 departments of English and other modern languages from 201 institutions attended.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4CMEMBERSHIP DUES: Association activities are designed to serve the professional and scholarly needs and interests of members and to provide members with opportunities to serve the field. In fiscal year 201617 the MLA had a total of 23,022 members. Of this number 4,245 were student members, 14,476 were regular members, and 4,301 were honorary or life members. MLA members are eligible to receive MLA publications and to submit essays for possible publication in PMLA. These essays are reviewed by specialists in the field who offer helpful criticism for the improvement of the essays. MLA members are eligible to submit essays for possible publication in Profession, published on MLA Commons. Authors for publication may receive comments from the members of the Profession Advisory Committee and other specialist reviewers. MLA members are also eligible to propose convention sessions and to participate in the convention program as speakers; they are eligible to run for office, participate in the associations various governance structures, and serve on association committees that oversee publications, the convention, and other activities. In addition, members may participate in the development of association policies and influence practice in the field concerning, for example, interviewing and hiring, institutional arrangements affecting class size and workload, and the evaluation of scholarship. The MLA Web site provides information about the association and its programs. Visitors can join the association or renew their membership, change address and directory information, learn about the upcoming annual convention, submit proposals for convention sessions, register for the convention and make hotel reservations, and review and order MLA publications. The site includes the MLA Newsletter in PDF, lists of forthcoming meetings, professional announcements, and a searchable program for the MLA Annual Convention, as well as a link to MLA Commons, a network that connects MLA members and provides new avenues for scholarly communication and collaboration. Association reports, professional guidelines, and MLA policies and procedures are also posted on the site.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4DGRANTS: The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the MLA a grant of $1,900,000 to conduct Connected Academics: Preparing Language and Literature PhDs for a Variety of Careers, a project expanding on the MLAs earlier work in broadening the possibilities for doctoral education in language and literature. This project supports initiatives aimed at demonstrating how doctoral education can develop students capacities to bring the expertise they acquire in advanced humanistic study to a wide range of fulfilling, secure, and well-compensated professional situations, beyond postsecondary faculty positions. In the course of this project, which began December 1, 2015, and will conclude August 31, 2019, the MLA will undertake the following activities. Annual reports are provided to the Mellon Foundation. 1. Support three partners in creating doctoral education initiatives to promote career diversity. 2. Coordinate three Connected Academics Institutes at partner organizations, to facilitate collaboration on developing strategies and resources. 3. Organize three yearlong Connected Academics pro seminars in New York City. 4. Provide training and resources to help transform doctoral education and increase mentoring for job seekers. 5. Expand the MLAs 201314 PhD Employment Study. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the MLA a grant of $225,000 for a pilot project designed to provide a proof-of-concept for Humanities Commons, a federated, society-managed, open-source Web platform facilitating communication and collaboration amongst the members of scholarly societies in the humanities. This project is in partnership with three other scholarly societies: the College Art Association, the Association for Jewish Studies, and the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. In the course of this project, which began July 1, 2015, and concluded on June 30, 2017, the MLA established Commons sites for each of the partner societies and connected them through a shared authentication and identity management system. A final report will be delivered in September 2017. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the MLA a grant of $310,000 to conduct an intensive planning project in support of Humanities Commons. This project began July 1, 2017, and will conclude September 30, 2018. A final report will be delivered by December 31, 2018. The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded the MLA a grant of $300,000 for a project entitled Humanities CORE, in collaboration with the Columbia University Libraries, connecting an underserved disciplinary community with repository infrastructure to support access to, preservation of, and impact created by the scholarship. This project began September 1, 2016, and will conclude on August 31, 2019. A final report will be delivered on November 30, 2019. The Open Society Foundations awarded the MLA a grant of $24,000 to undertake a seven-month study with the aim of understanding current "alternative" evaluation practices, known as "altmetrics," as they are used within the humanities and social science (HSS) disciplines. The grant began October 2016 and will conclude on September 30, 2017, including the final report. The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Michigan State University (MSU) a grant of $309,000 to conduct the project Humane Metrics in the Humanities and Social Sciences, to develop "Humany Metrics" that will better recognize, promote, and nurture scholarly values capable of enriching scholarship overall. The MLA is a subcontractor of the grant and was awarded $14,075 to provide assistance to MSU in the completion of this project. In the course of this project, which began July 1, 2017, and will conclude in February 2018, the MLA will help develop a framework that properly reflects the breadth and depth of scholarships in HSS disciplines. In September 2016, with the support of a chairmans grant for $30,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the MLA began data collection for the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth censuses in the series of language enrollment censuses that the association has conducted since 1958. The preliminary report on the findings will be published in March 2018; a full report will be published in fall 2018.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4DOTHER: Research and Programs The MLA works to improve English and foreign language programs in colleges and universities, through support for the Association of Departments of English (ADE) and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL). Membership in these organizations is institutional: ADE had 560 member departments; ADFL had 710 member departments. The purpose of these organizations is to strengthen the administration of college and university English and foreign language departments. Toward this purpose, the ADE and ADFL publish two professional journals for its member departments, the ADE Bulletin and the ADFL Bulletin, which carry articles on standards in the field; guidelines for departmental programs; and statistical information about enrollments, curriculum developments, ongoing and new academic programs, and the status of faculty members. The ADE and ADFL Web sites make available policy statements, guidelines, reports on data collected in surveys, summer seminar information and registration, and moderated discussion lists. Some features are available only to members: the complete archive of the ADE Bulletin and the ADFL Bulletin; online voting in Executive Committee elections; the ADE and ADFL directories; a list of doctoral programs in English and comparative literature, American studies, and womens studies; and moderated discussion lists for ADE- and ADFL-member department chairs. Data Analysis In fiscal year 201617 the MLA reported on the number of jobs that English and foreign language departments announced in the Job Information List (JIL) and published an analysis of how departments indexed and categorized the positions they submitted to the JIL over the seventeen years 200001 to 201617. These and similar reports are available on the MLA Web site, for use by members and by departments or divisions of English, foreign languages, comparative literature, or humanities. Special Projects Located on the MLA Web site, the MLA Language Map is an interactive tool free to the public that uses data from the Census 2000 and the 2005 and 2010 American Community Surveys to show the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages (including English) commonly spoken at home in every county and state in the United States. The Language Map includes data from a special tabulation from the United States Census commissioned by the MLA in 2004. The MLA Language Map also shows the institutions of higher education where a language other than English is being taught, using the fall 2016 enrollment figures from the MLAs census of enrollments in languages other than English. MLA Web site statistics indicate that from January 1, 2017, to October 1, 2017, the MLA Language Map had 8,545 unique active visitors and 43,377 requests for maps. Visitors to the Language Map Data Center performed 69,068 searches during this same time frame. Restricted Funds Awards Scholarly achievement is recognized through the prizes the MLA awards at the annual convention. Of the sixteen prizes awarded in 201617, nine were supported by restricted funds, the others by general funds. The nine funded prizes were the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American or Spanish literatures and cultures; the Howard R. Marraro Prize for Italian Studies; the Fenia and Yaakov Leviant Memorial Prize in Yiddish Studies; the Matei Calinescu Prize for twentieth- and twenty-first-century thought; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies, for an outstanding scholarly work in the field involving at least two literatures; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for French and Francophone Studies; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Literary Work; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Studies in Germanic Languages and Literatures; and the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies.
