| Desc | Cure RTD Foundation is proud to have funded the three following research projects in advancement of the understanding and treatment of RTD:(a) $100,000 to a University of California project aiming to find all proteins with significant interactions with the RFVT2 (SLC52A2) transporter. Protein-protein interactions occur in all transporters. Outside proteins can cause up or down-regulation of the transporter function, change transporter stability, or even membrane targeting. This topic has not been investigated in RFVT2, so we have no idea what proteins interact with RFVT2. These proteins could up or down-regulated the transporter and, in many cases, can be regulated by various strategies (drugs, diet, gene therapy, etc.). Strategies targeting interacting proteins and their binding interfaces are receiving increasing attention as a therapeutic approach. The grant is complimentary to several ongoing RTD projects and could lead to direction changes in those projects if significant discoveries are found. This project also has the potential to lead to substantial NIH funding for future RTD projects.(b) $23,715 to The Jackson Laboratory. Riboflavin transporter deficiency (RTD) is a rare neurodegenerative genetic disorder with onset most often in early childhood. RTD effects motor and sensory neurons causing loss of the ability to hear, see, move and breath. RTD is caused by mutations in the SLC52A2 and SLC52A3 genes. C57BL/6J-Slc52a2em6 (L341L,L344P) Lutzy/Lutzy (JR#034144) homozygous mice are viable and lack any phenotypes. Standard chow the mice are fed has a high level of riboflavin, and it has been hypothesized that the high levels of riboflavin may be alleviating any phenotypes caused by the mutation in the SLC52A2 gene. The goal of this project is to determine if decreasing the amount of riboflavin in the chow will induce a phenotype in C57BL/6J-Slc52a2em6(L341L,L344P) Lutzy/Lutzy (JR#034144) homozygous mice.(c) $7,997 to an AMC Hospital Amsterdam to fund the Metabolomics Labs for Project 23P0066. | Desc |
