| Desc | EDUCATION AND AUDIENCE - CHM engages audiences as collaborators, storytellers, and supporters of history. CHM activates these roles through audience development and designs programmatic offerings for families, young adults, members, and school groups, all in order to bring the people, places, events, and experiences of Chicago's past to life. In FY17 more than 62,000 K-12 students visited the museum, along with more than 265,000 general admission visitors. CHM hosted 39 professional development workshops that were attended by over 900 teachers. CHM provides adult education programs, commemorative day celebrations, film screenings, and public history tours of the many sites, icons, and neighborhoods of Chicago. CHM has created digital resources on many historical topics including "Facing Freedom Challenges Democracy," "Sensing Chicago," and "The Great Chicago Fire." In FY17 the museum acquired the Chicago Metro History Fair which is a project-based inquiry program that challenges students to become historians by actually doing history. Guided by their teachers, students in grades six through twelve choose their own topics connected to Chicago or Illinois history, and then conduct research, analyze sources, make an argument, and finally produce a project to show their work. | Desc | COLLECTIONS AND RESEARCH - CHM houses a premier collection of more than 22 million objects, including an unparalleled set of materials pertaining to Abraham Lincoln; the second largest costume collection in the world; the Hedrich Blessing architecture photography collection; a flag by Betsy Ross; and the complete library of Studs Terkel interviews, which are now being digitized by the Library of Congress. CHM seeks to uncover the power of original historical materials and to improve access and maximize the discoverability of its collections. CHM materials are available to the public through the Research Center and its library, which served more than 7,000 patrons in FY17. CHM's website introduces more than 2 million annual online visitors to collection holdings, and offers them the chance to inquire with Research Center staff about objects and documents of interest.
