| Desc | Food Distribution: The Houston Food Bank's core program is large-scale distribution of food and non-food items such as diapers and cleaning supplies to over 600 hunger relief agencies, which then provide aid directly to 800,000 individuals annually throughout our 18-county service area. In FY 2016-17, the Food Bank distributed the equivalent of 83 million nutritious meals, based on 97 million pounds of distributed product. Because the Food Bank places high priority on nutrition, on average 40% of total distribution is fresh fruit and vegetables. The network of partner agencies includes food pantries - most of them faith-based, shelters, soup kitchens and other meal sites at community centers. The value placed on total distribution was over $153 million in donated and purchased food to the Houston area community. | Desc | Child Hunger Initiatives: One in four southeast Texas children are at-risk of hunger, which means they don't have consistent access to enough nutritious food. The Houston Food Bank's Backpack Buddy program provides a food sack on Fridays during the school year to children who otherwise might have nothing to eat on the weekend. Teachers report that these children are better able to learn when they return to school Monday morning. In FY 2016-17, 368,368 food sacks were distributed in up to 625 schools. The Kids Cafe program provides a prepared balanced meal for children at after-school programs operated by partners such as YMCA, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Clubs and other locations. The program also is offered in the summer, when the number of children served increases dramatically. | Desc | Client Assistance Program: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) is the most effective means in our country for addressing hunger. Food acquired through use of SNAP benefits far outweighs the amount of food available through the system of private charities. Houston Food Bank's Client Assistance Program (CAP) provides application assistance for SNAP and other state-funded social and health services, including Medicaid and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program). In addition to offering services at the Houston Food Bank, CAP staff travel to community locations to provide application assistance and interviews to determine eligibility. Cases are submitted electronically to the state for review. Staff can issue Electronic Benefit Transfer cards to clients in order to expedite receipt of benefits after eligibility is determined and approved by the state. Services are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. In FY 2016-17, 15,760 applications were processed, which generated over 15 million meals. | Desc |
