DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION'S COLLECTIONSSCHEDULE D, PART III, LINE 4 THE TWO MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY'S ART COLLECTION ARE THE WATKINS COLLECTION BEGUN IN 1945, AND THE KATZEN COLLECTION BEGUN IN 2005. THE COLLECTIONS SERVE AS A TEACHING RESOURCE FOR THE ART DEPARTMENT AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS TELLING THE STORY OF MODERN ART AND ITS OFFSHOOTS IN WASHINGTON DC, WITH SIDE STORIES RELATED TO WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE LARGER CONTEMPORARY WORLD. THE MUSEUM FEATURES OVER 30,000 SQUARE FEET OF EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THESE TWO COLLECTIONS. THE PUBLIC IS WELCOME TO VISIT THE MUSEUM AND EXHIBITIONS FREE OF CHARGE. INDEED, THE KATZEN ARTS CENTER IS NOW A DESTINATION FOR CERTAIN TOUR GROUPS IN WASHINGTON DC.
INTENDED USES OF ENDOWMENT FUNDSSCHEDULE D, PART V, LINE 4 THE UNIVERSITY'S ENDOWMENT CONSISTS OF APPROXIMATELY 450 INDIVIDUAL FUNDS ESTABLISHED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND RELATED ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES. ITS ENDOWMENT INCLUDES BOTH DONOR RESTRICTED ENDOWMENT FUNDS AND FUNDS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO FUNCTION AS ENDOWMENTS. AS REQUIRED BY GAAP, NET ASSETS ASSOCIATED WITH ENDOWMENT FUNDS, INCLUDING FUNDS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO FUNCTION AS ENDOWMENTS, ARE CLASSIFIED AND REPORTED BASED ON THE EXISTENCE OR ABSCENCE OF DONOR-IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS.
FIN 48 (ASC 740) FOOTNOTESCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2 THE UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE AS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE U.S. INTERNAL REVENUE CODE, EXCEPT FOR TAXES ON INCOME FROM ACTIVITIES UNRELATED TO ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE. SUCH ACTIVITIES RESULTED IN NO NET TAXABLE INCOME IN FISCAL YEARS 2017 and 2016. Due to the nature of the Airlie transaction, Airlie remains a taxable non-stock corporation and is taxed as a C-Corporation and uses the liability method of accounting for income taxes. Accordingly, deferred tax assets and liabilities are determined based on the difference between the financial statement and tax basis of assets and liabilities, using enacted tax rates in effect for the year in which the differences are expected to reverse. Income tax expense is the tax payable or refundable for the period plus or minus the change during the period in deferred tax assets and liabilities. The Universitys policy is to record interest and penalties as an increase in income taxes payable and corresponding increase to income tax expense. No penalties or interest have been recorded for the year ended April 30, 2017.

AIRLIE CENTER GIFTED TO AUSchedule M, Part I, Line 25 A rural estate once heralded as an "island of thought" by Life magazine is now part of American University. An hours drive from DC, the Airlie Center in Warrenton, Virginia, sits on 300 pastoral acres and contains historic Airlie House, a village of guest rooms, meeting facilities, an organic garden, and a lake. Airlies Board of Directors gifted the property to AU in September 2016. One of the first conference facilities of its kind in the country, Airlie was considered a model of innovation when founder Murdock Head opened the doors in 1960. Since then it has been welcoming international leaders, policy makers, and diplomats for significant meetings and programs dedicated to social progress, education, environmental research, and public health - some of which have shaped social movements and institutions. It is fitting that an institution committed to active citizenship and global leadership would continue Airlies mission. "The university is honored to have been selected for this wonderful gift. It is our intent to carry on the very impressive and important legacy of Airlie, while leveraging this marvelous facility for American Universitys academic initiatives," said AU president emeritus Neil Kerwin.
Use of Third PartiesSchedule M, Part I, Line 32a All stocks that are donated to American University are sent to Morgan Stanley and they sell the stocks as soon as possible.

A GREEN LEADER IN DC AU'S STRATEGIC PLAN NAMES "AN ACTIVE PURSUIT OF SUSTAINABILITY" AS ONE OF ITS TEN VISIONARY GOALS. SINCE THE PLAN WAS PUBLISHED IN 2009, THE UNIVERSITY'S SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED IN NATIONAL RANKINGS AND RATINGS: STARS GOLD RATING, SIERRA CLUB COOL SCHOOLS AND THE PRINCETON REVIEW GREEN HONOR ROLL. THE UNIVERSITY'S SUSTAINABILITY PLAN OUTLINES A PATH FOR CONTINUING THIS LEADERSHIP BY ENHANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN CURRICULUM, RESEARCH, AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, WHILE ACHIEVING AMBITIOUS OPERATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY GOALS, AND EXPANDING OUTREACH PROGRAMS THAT INTEGRATE SUSTAINABILITY INTO OUR ADMINISTRATIVE PLANNING AND CAMPUS CULTURE. Since 2010, all new buildings have been designed to earn at least LEED Gold ratings. In 2016, AU earned a Silver rating for Gray Hall as the first LEED for Existing Buildings project on campus, showing the commitment to pursue efficiency and wellness in the existing campus infrastructure. The entire AU campus officially has been designated a public garden and arboretum by the National Arboretum and Botanic Garden Association, and Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The campus now has more than 2,500 trees comprising more than 150 species. American University entered into a groundbreaking partnership with George Washington University that demonstrates how a large urban institution can proactively satisfy and manage its energy demand, directly sourcing regionally accessible renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint. The 52-megawatt solar project is located on three sites in northeastern North Carolina, and is comprised of 243,000 solar photovoltaic panels on 450 acres. The project provides 50% of the Universitys electricity requirements from solar, and abates approximately 60,000 metric tons of CO2 per year compared to conventional generation in our region. AU has an expanding suite of sustainable transportation solutions, including: free biodiesel-fueled shuttles to the nearest Metro station; a Capitol Bikeshare station; all-electric service vehicles; a private ridesharing system; and Live Near Your Work grants to encourage employees to live near campus or close to transit. AU is also the first university in the DC area to offer the University Pass (U Pass) in which a fixed student fee allows unlimited access to metro and metrobus for full time undergraduate and graduate students.

AIRLIE CENTER GIFTED TO AUSCHEDULE B, PART I, NO. 1 A rural estate once heralded as an "island of thought" by Life magazine is now part of American University.
