WORKING WITH DC SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS AU'S SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, TEACHING & HEALTH PREPARES EDUCATION STUDENTS TO BECOME ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS. AU PLACES STUDENT TEACHERS IN DC CLASSROOMS FULL TIME FOR 15 WEEKS TO ASSIST IN TEACHING ALL ASPECTS OF THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM. THE DC PUBLIC SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR HAS PRAISED AU'S PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECTS WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS, RANGING FROM PROFESSIONAL TRAINING TO VOLUNTEER TUTORING TO WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS ACROSS ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES. SOME OF THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE: 1) INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION IN EDUCATION, AN INTERDISCIPLINARY ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO CONDUCTING, ADMINISTERING, AND DISSEMINATING EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND RESEARCH-INFORMED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES. 2) Math for America DC (MfA DC) and From the Laboratory to the Classroom: Building Capacity for Math and Science Teaching in the Classroom (Lab2Class) programs. The goal of both programs is to ensure excellence in science and/or mathematics teaching in DC public and public charter middle and high schools by recruiting, training, and retaining talented science and mathematics teachers who commit to teaching in DC schools for a four-year period. 3) The Team Nutrition program where AU works with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education to expand nutrition education and wellness activities in 12 high-need middle schools in DC. 4) Jumpstart, a program that offers language and literacy development in preschools serving low-income children. Seventy AU students from across campus, known as Corps members, volunteer with this AmeriCorps program, partnering with three public charter schools in Ward 7 and 8. 5) Imagination Quest (IQ) involves collaboration between AU and Imagination Stage. Through an AU grant, more than 60 teachers in the DC public schools, grades K-12, have taken a three-credit graduate course in arts-based teaching and learning. 6) The Eagle Endowment for Public and Community Service is a student-initiated endowment fund that provides service grants to students three times a year. In recent years, grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 have been awarded for projects in DC public schools and elsewhere. 7) WAMU 88.5 FM's Youth Voices program teaches selected high school students how to create a radio feature story about an issue that affects their lives and community. WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF LAW The Washington College of Law's highly-ranked clinical programs provide free legal services to poor and otherwise underrepresented area residents. About 230 law students per year participate in these clinics, which serve a variety of clients. In addition, eight WCL students each year represent low-income clients facing eviction in DC Landlord and Tenant Court as participants in the DC Law Students in Court program, an independent legal service provider in the District. The law school's Equal Justice Foundation (EJF), established in 1989, provides grants to law students who have obtained unpaid summer positions with public interest organizations, which provide critical services to underrepresented members of the local community. AN OPEN DOOR POLICY AU maintains a good neighbor policy by working with neighbors, local community organizations, and the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in the campus area. Led by the director of community relations, the university's outreach efforts also include maintaining ongoing contact with several District of Columbia offices and agencies. On a more informal level, representatives of American University also meet and interact with members of the neighboring communities on a regular basis. An integral part of its good neighbor policy includes making the campus a valuable asset and resource for the local community, as AU welcomes the public use of many of its facilities, resources, and community-centric programs. Continued Education DC residents are welcome at AU's Bender Library to study and access print materials, library catalog, and databases. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers classes in the fall and spring for intellectually curious "seasoned learners" with a genuine interest in continuing their learning with like-minded people. The Community Audit Program is open to individuals ages 60 and older who live in the 20016 zip code surrounding the university. Residents may audit one course each fall, spring, and summer semester for the nominal fee of $100 (plus course fees). The Community Audit Program, alongside the Alumni Audit Program, supports the Alumni Association Scholarship. The Arts The Katzen Arts Center and American University Museum serves as an important venue for the DC arts community. It hosts a variety of programs ranging from student performances to lectures on environmentally sound business practices and film screenings. DC residents are invited to attend open rehearsals or take tours of the galleries. Many of the exhibits shown at the museum have earned regional, national, and international accolades. District children are the focus of Kids at the Katzen, which presents creative activities and summer sports camps. AU welcomes neighbors to exciting campus sports events. Patriot League championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and winning programs in basketball, soccer, wrestling, and other sports give area residents a chance to share in AU's school spirit. The Eagles strive to be the home team for the entire city. Additionally, residents may use the university's athletic facilities by becoming members of the William I Jacobs Fitness Center in our sports center. A GREEN LEADER IN DC AU's Strategic Plan names "an active pursuit of sustainability" as one of its ten visionary goals. Since the plan was published in 2009, the university's sustainability leadership has been recognized in national rankings and ratings: STARS Gold Rating, Sierra Club Cool Schools and the Princeton Review Green Honor Roll. The university's Sustainability Plan outlines a path for continuing this leadership by enhancing sustainability in curriculum, research, and co-curricular activities, while achieving ambitious operational sustainability goals, and expanding outreach programs that integrate sustainability into our administrative planning and campus culture. Since 2010, all new buildings have been designed to earn at least LEED Gold ratings. Moreover, AU is one of only three universities in the world to incorporate LEED-compliant practices as standard facilities operations and maintenance procedures, tracking 25 existing buildings to earn LEED certifications. The pressing need to address climate change has motivated AU to set its sights on becoming carbon-neutral by 2020. Since AU president Neil Kerwin signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, the university has pursued its climate plan rigorously, including: reducing total energy consumption even as our physical footprint has expanded; installing the largest combined solar electric and hot water systems in any city on the East Coast; purchasing 100 percent green power; and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from air travel by protecting rainforests in Costa Rica. Additionally, the university has set a goal of s
CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY MONITORING & ENFORCEMENTFORM 990, PART VI, LINE 12C BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN ANNUAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST STATEMENT AND SUBMIT SUCH STATEMENT TO THE SECRETARY OF THE BOARD WHO IS ALSO THE GENERAL COUNSEL FOR THE UNIVERSTY. THE DISCLOSURE STATEMENT ALSO REQUIRES ALL MEMBERS TO NOTIFY THE BOARD PROMPTLY OF AN ACTUAL, APPARENT, OR POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST AS IT ARISES, SO THAT IT CAN BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATLY AND NOT JUST ONCE PER YEAR.
PROCESS FOR DETERMINING COMPENSATIONFORM 990, PART VI, LINES 15A & 15B The compensation of all officers of the university is reviewed and approved annually by the compensation committee of the board of trustees, and is subsequently approved by the full board. The committee engages third party experts to benchmark compensation for these positions on an annual basis. The compensation of key employees is set by their supervising officer within the constraints of the board of trustees' approved university operating budget.
