DescNOCSAE funded research resulting in the publication of more than twenty peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on the topic of concussions in sports, injury epidemiology, and equipment performance. In addition, the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, in affiliation with Ohio State University, maintains a high school sports injury surveillance program and publishes results of that data with significant grant support from NOCSAE.NOCSAE also assisted with the establishment of athletic equipment standards through related research. On the basis of grant funded research, and direct contracted research, NOCSAE has drafted three new standards for baseball and softball protective headgear and face gear for defensive players, is investigating a youth football helmet standard and has one draft for consideration, and is investigating the feasibility of a lacrosse helmet standard for women.Desc

DescEnhancement of the integrity of the NOCSAE standards and licensee compliance. This figure includes $521,127 spent in maintaining and improving the integrity and accuracy of certifications made regarding compliance of specific equipment to the NOCSAE standards, and in modifying certain language in some standards, as well as collecting and reviewing testing certification data from many of its licensees, and in performing direct product testing where evidence was provided of a potential product failure. The total figure also includes $294,833 apportioned from legal and administrative expenses to the enforcement of license agreement compliance and performance, litigation to enforce termination of noncompliant licensees, and compelling compliance with certain license agreement terms regarding product quality control and quality assurance. As part of the process of elevating the integrity of the standards and the reliability of performance under those standards, NOCSAE has created and implemented an independent and accredited third party certification process.Desc

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bThe 990 is submitted to the executive committee for review. This committee consists of the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and executive director.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cConflict of interest within the scope of the role of the organization would relate to equipment design, grant funding, or enforcement of license fee payments. Consequently, the potential for conflict is quite narrow, and easily monitored when those issues come up for discussion. Additionally, the organization requires that all grant applicants disclose any potential conflicts of interest in the grant approval process. This is the area which presents the greatest chance of signficant conflict of interest. This is also the area which is most easily monitored, since the company can solicit conflict input from both the applicant and from the board.
