FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A:Memorial Health University Medical Center 2016 Community Benefit Report About Memorial Health Memorial Health is a nonprofit healthcare organization that serves 35 counties in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. Headquartered in Savannah, Georgia, our primary service area covers Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan counties in Georgia. Our system includes: - Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC), a 604-bed teaching and research hospital and regional referral center for southeast Georgia. MHUMC houses the region's only Level 1 trauma center, the region's only children's hospital, and the region's only Level III neonatal intensive care nursery. - Memorial Health University Physicians (MHUP), the region's largest physician network, consisting of both primary and specialty care practices. - A major medical education program with physician residency programs in diagnostic radiology, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and general surgery. In 2016, 140 resident physicians trained at MHUMC, along with 111 nurse residents and five pharmacy residents. Our campus is also the Savannah campus of Mercer University School of Medicine, a full four-year medical school. Our affiliation with Mercer helps maintain a supply of new physicians for rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. Together, we established a three-year family medicine accelerated curriculum to enable students to finish medical school a year early and move into the work force more quickly. In 2016, MHUMC's medical education program provided continuing education to 14,898 medical professionals throughout the region. - Memorial Health Partners (MHP) is our provider-sponsored insurance network for local employers. MHP works with local businesses to provide employee health plan benefits, population health management, and wellness coaching. The MHP network is used by more than 35,000 people. It includes 19 hospitals and 2,200 providers and ancillary caregivers in 29 counties in Georgia and South Carolina. - NurseOne, a 24-hour call center that answers questions from patients, helps patients find a primary care doctor, and assists physician practices with after-hours call and scheduling. Memorial Health by the Numbers in 2016 - 27,039 hospital admissions - 244,317 hospital outpatient visits - 21,150 surgeries - 2,833 deliveries - 324 premature babies transported to our Level III neonatal intensive care nursery from other hospitals - 4,700 children's hospital admissions - 3,501 traumas - 105,903 emergency department visits - 450 average daily patient census - 5.75 days average length of stay - 636 physicians on our medical staff - 140 resident physicians - 4,451 Team Members - 2.2 percent growth in patient volume in 2016 Our Mission, Vision, and Values - Mission: With compassion, we heal, teach, and discover. - Vision: We will be the healthcare system of choice by demonstrating excellence in everything we do. - Values: Safety, trust, respect, world-class, enjoyment, and my Memorial. Charity Care MHUMC provides vital medical services that are not available at any other hospitals in our region. This includes our Level 1 trauma center, children's hospital, Level III neonatal intensive care nursery, and high-risk obstetrics programs. In 2016, we provided $20,148,702 in financial assistance, which includes indigent/charity care. Two key factors contribute to our high rate of indigent care: 1. We do not refuse service to any man, woman, or child, regardless of their ability to pay. 2. We are the largest hospital in southeast Georgia and we offer the most advanced medical services. As a result, we often see the most critically ill or injured patients who then accrue the most costly medical expenses. 2016 Accolades and Honors Memorial Health regularly earns recognition for our high-quality services. Recent accolades include: - Exceptional Joint Commission survey and full reaccreditation. - Certification in Advanced Heart Failure from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association for our heart failure program and clinic. - Joint Commission disease-specific accreditation for hip replacement, knee replacement, and spine surgery. - Designated an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. - Chest Pain Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. - Platinum recognition from the National Hospital Organ Donation Campaign for organ donation advocacy and education. - "39 Weeks" recognition from the March of Dimes for reducing the number of elective inductions and cesarean deliveries performed before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy. - $20,000 HopeLine grant from Verizon to provide domestic violence resources and education in our emergency department. - Designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. - Accredited comprehensive bariatric center by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. - Accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. - Designated a Pink Ribbon Facility for Excellence in Breast Health by Hologic. - Designated a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for rare and complex cancers. - Designated a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center+ for gastric stapling, gastric band, hip and knee replacement, maternity care, and spine surgery. - Named a Cigna Center of Excellence for total knee replacement, total hip replacement, and spine surgery. It provides an array of specialists including pediatric hematologists/oncologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, orthopaedic surgeons, intensivists/critical care doctors, the region's only pediatric neurosurgeon, and a Level III neonatal intensive care nursery (NICN). The Level III designation means we are equipped to care for the most premature or critically ill infants. We also have a team of child life specialists who help children cope with and understand their illness. We are in the process of renovating an existing building on our campus to create the region's first and only freestanding children's hospital. Cardiovascular Care The Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial University Medical Center includes the largest group of cardiologists in the region. We offer state-of-the-art hybrid valve repair techniques: transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip mitral valve repair. In 2016, our Heart & Vascular Institute became the only facility in the region to give patients lifesaving red armbands after heart surgery. The bands include a phone number that provides around-the-clock access to a heart specialist in the crucial days after surgery. The Heart & Vascular Institute also formed a local chapter of the national Mended Hearts peer-support program for people living with a heart condition.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A:Emergency and Trauma The Parker's Emergency & Trauma Center is a Level 1 trauma center one of only five in Georgia. Level 1 is the highest level of emergency care as established by the American College of Surgeons. Our trauma center serves 28 counties in Georgia and South Carolina and is the only Level 1 facility between Jacksonville, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina. Another feature of our emergency care is the M. Gage Ochsner Institute for Injury Research and Prevention, which tracks trauma data and provides education to reduce injuries and improve trauma care in Georgia. Joint Replacement Surgery and Geriatric Fracture Repair Our joint replacement program was the first in the region to offer the anterior approach for hip replacement and was the site of Savannah's first total ankle arthroplasty procedure. The program includes a geriatric fracture service to expedite patients to surgery after a hip fracture, decrease their length of stay, and lower the risk of complications. Other features of the joint replacement program include a pre-surgery class to help patients and their families fully prepare for joint replacement surgery, and long-term follow-up care. Primary Care and Specialty Care Physician Practices Memorial Health University Physicians (MHUP) is the largest physician network serving southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. It includes primary and specialty care offices throughout the region and student health clinics for Armstrong State University and Savannah College of Art and Design. All MHUP primary care practices are Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Homes, a care concept that has been shown to improve patient wellness and reduce the cost of care. Our MHUP practices utilize Epic electronic medical records and the MyChart patient portal so patients can view their medical record, view lab results, request appointments, request prescription refills, and communicate with their doctor's office online. Spine Surgery Memorial Spine specializes in spine surgery and both the surgical and non-surgical treatment of spine conditions. Our spine surgery team includes both orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. Memorial Spine actively participates in national clinical trials to give patients access to new devices. We were one of the first facilities in the nation to implant a device called the Triumph lumbar disc for herniated disc treatment, and we are the only hospital in Georgia participating in the ACADIA Facet replacement system trial for lumbar spinal stenosis. Stroke Our stroke services include rapid treatment, community education, and telemedicine services. Our stroke team is made up of neurologists, emergency-trained physicians, and specially trained nurses. We were the first in the region to offer the breakthrough Apollo System, a minimally invasive tool that can quickly repair bleeding and remove blood clots deep in the brain. Memorial Health participates in telemedicine services that allow our physicians to evaluate patients and provide care recommendations for five hospitals in rural Georgia. In 2016, our Savannah doctors participated in 93 telemedicine consults for stroke and recommended the administration of a clot-busting medication 47 times. Women's Health Memorial Health for Women is the only labor and delivery program in the region with a team specializing in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. We also provide genetic counseling, care for pregnant women with previous medical conditions, pre-term labor services, and care for women carrying multiples. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists work closely with the Level III neonatal intensive care nursery at the Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children's Hospital of Savannah to ensure all new families receive a healthy start. Memorial Health for Women is actively working toward Baby-Friendly Hospital designation, which recognizes optimal infant feeding and mother-baby bonding. Caring for All, Regardless of Their Ability to Pay Memorial Health University Medical Center provides a real and essential safety net, assuring that those who choose to come to us receive the medical care, financial help, and patient resources they need. Graduate Medical Education The graduate medical education program at MHUMC had its beginnings well over 50 years ago with the establishment of the internal medicine residency program. Today, there are six residency programs: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, and diagnostic radiology. MHUMC and each program are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The physician resident training program aligns with the early mission of MHUMC to provide care for those in need as well as train future physicians for the community and the region. Of the 139 residents trained in 2016, MHUMC did not receive compensation for 40 of them. This is due to caps placed on the allowable number of physicians engaged in graduate medical instruction in all teaching hospitals across the United States.
