Form 990, Part III, Line 4aCivic Education Educational Resources - The Center produces a variety of standards-based teaching materials for use in the classroom and at the museum. These include online and on-site workshops for educators, class field trips, themed on-site educational packages, and the creation of a wide array of teaching materials: Ongoing Teacher Workshops - The Center's professional development opportunities enable educators to deepen their understanding of civic education, the U.S. Constitution and American history to promote meaningful, nonpartisan classroom instruction using the Interactive Constitution and other Center resources. For full or half-day workshops, the Center's education staff, along with guest scholars, present grade-level-appropriate sessions about the Center's cutting-edge educational materials and programs. In addition, teachers receive classroom-ready resources and learn how to illuminate constitutional ideals and inspire active citizenship. Student Guides - Visitors to the main exhibition can pick up a copy of our Student Guide, which provides an engaging way for students to experience the main exhibition by exploring how the Constitution shapes and is shaped by major events in American history. Guides are available for elementary-, middle-, and high-school students. Student guides are also available for feature exhibitions. Constitution Hall Pass - In 2010, the Center launched a series of dynamic web-based video lessons that promote civic competencies - the knowledge, intellectual processes, and democratic dispositions required to be active and engaged citizens in public life. Designed for middle- and high-school students, the videos teach historic and civic lessons, and make repeated connections between the subject matter and students' everyday lives, showing them how both history and the Constitution are relevant to them. In addition to the video lessons, throughout the year students and teachers have the opportunity to chat live online with constitutional experts and members of the museum's education staff about the topics presented in each episode. Civic Calendar - The National Constitution Center's annual Civic Calendar celebrates civic holidays and historical milestones by highlighting events, activities, lesson plans, and resources available at the museum or for use in the classroom. Each year the calendar includes educational content and original artwork tied to a different theme. The 2016 calendar focused on significant events and key figures of the Reconstruction Era. The calendar is provided to educators for free and is distributed through direct mailings and at conferences. Progressive Business Publications - This continuing education and continuing legal education partnership offers online courses and audio conferences for educators, administrators, and other professionals seeking career development. The content provided focuses on constitutional issues, current events and civic engagement. Online Resources - The Constitution Center maintains a content-rich website that provides access to a wide array of teaching resources. Educational offerings include the Interactive Constitution - a new, free resource delivering top level constitutional scholarship from across the political spectrum to classrooms throughout the country, promoted in partnership with the CollegeBoard as part of multiple Advanced Placement frameworks. Other online resources include: lesson plans, Living News video clips, live chats, podcasts, and livestreams and archived videos of the Constitution Center's stellar lineup of Town Hall Programs. The Constitution Center's blog, Constitution Daily, delivers the latest coverage of constitutional issues from national experts, including Lyle Dennison, the dean of Supreme Court reporters in Washington. Pocket Constitutions - The Center offers miniature copies of the full text of the Constitution to museum visitors as a fun and unique way for teachers to provide their students with constitution study materials. Young Citizens Scholarships - The Center subsidizes transportation and admission costs for Title I schools to help defray the cost of field trips for underserved students. Educational Programming - The Center puts on a variety of fun, interactive programs designed to educate students about - and engage them with - their Constitution. These programs range from the daily offerings of our main and feature exhibitions, to special-occasion events that draw students from all over to the Center, to our traveling programs. Daily Programs - Throughout the year, the Center produces a variety of daily programs and demonstrations, such as Constitution Game Board, Presidential Trivia, and a Civil War Artifact Cart, to engage visitors throughout the museum. Civic Holidays - The Center is the best place to honor America's civic holidays, occasions to commemorate America's history, celebrate our rights and responsibilities as citizens, and learn about our constitutional ideals. The Center commemorates days like Martin Luther King Day, Earth Day, Flag Day, Constitution Day, Veterans Day, and many other holidays throughout the year with engaging, educational programs and activities at the Center. The entire week of Constitution Day (September 17th), for instance, is full of activities celebrating the signing of the document, from scholarly talks to a naturalization ceremony. As part of its Independence Day celebration, the Center partners with neighboring historic sites for the Finding the Founders program, presenting conversations with scholars who share their insights on equality and freedom through the lens of the American Revolution. Special Civic Holidays are offered during certain years to reflect a milestone anniversary, or a current event, for instance Election Day in 2016. Several of the Center's most popular holidays were presented with free or discounted admission, thanks to generous sponsors. Admission was free on Presidents Day/recognition of African American History (TD Bank), Memorial Day (The John Templeton Foundation), July 2 - Finding the Founders Event (Wawa), Wawa Hoagie Day (Wawa), Independence Day (The John Templeton Foundation), and Constitution Day (The John Templeton Foundation). Admission was $5 on Veterans Day, Bill of Rights Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Flag Day (Macy's). All visitors paid the $8 child rate on October 15 for the Dia Del Ninos event, a part of Hispanic Heritage Month (partnership with NBC10). Scout Days - The center offers three Boy Scout and Cub Scout Days and two Girl Scout Days throughout the year. The days offer scouts the chance to come to the museum and work towards earning American history or government themed merit badges, adventures, journeys, or legacy badges. Programs include flag ceremonies, interactive game shows, activity tables, artifact workshops, and museum tours. Themed Package Programs The Center offers fun, engaging themed museum packages for students of all ages. Theme Packages Programs provide students with unique ways to learn about the U.S. Constitution and its history and other important topics. Members of the education staff accompany student groups visiting the museum and facilitate learning experiences including original artifacts, interactive exhibits, and multimedia programs covering a range of topics, including: African American History, Being an Active Citizen, the Bill of Rights, the First Amendment, Growing up in America, Independence Day, Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, Separation of Powers, the Presidency, and Women's History. Traveling History & Civics Program - In 2008, the Center initiated a Traveling History & Civics program that sends museum educators into schools, community centers, and other educational facilities nationwide to present interactive civic education programs. These themed programs illuminate key constitutional topics including the Bill of Rights, the structure of our government, and the meaning of citizenship. Founding Freedoms Essay Contest - The Center launched the Founding Freedoms Essay Contest. Supported through a contribution by the John Templeton Foundation the Founding Freedoms Essay Contest challenged public and independent school teachers throughout the mid-Atlantic Region to increase constitutional literacy and awareness of individual rights in their classrooms. The essay contest asked 6th, 8th, and 12th grade students to compose essays exploring the contemporary meanings of and relationships between the founding documents - the Declaration Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Teachers were provided supporting materials and lesson plans, and winning student submissions were published on the Center's website. Winning students were invited to the Center for an awards ceremony with their teachers and guardians.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aCivic Education Theatre Programs - Offered daily to visitors as an introduction to the Main Exhibition, Freedom Rising is a multimedia theatrical experience that brings the American quest for freedom to life through 360-degree projection, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, and a dynamic live actor. In addition, the Center produces and presents museum theatre performances on a variety of mission-related topics. In 2007, the Center launched Living News, an interactive theatrical performance developed to engage student audiences with current constitutional issues. In fall 2014, the Center launched the Founding Freedoms playwriting competition, Thanks to the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation. The Founding Freedoms Playwriting Contest challenged public and independent school teachers throughout the Greater Philadelphia region (2014) and mid-Atlantic region (2016) to increase constitutional literacy and awareness of individual rights in their classrooms. The playwriting contest asks 12th grade students to compose plays exploring the contemporary meanings of the rights set forth in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights and to think creatively about our nation's history, the Constitution, and protecting individual freedoms. The winning submission was professional produced by the Center and performed at the Center by professional actors in the summer of 2015 and 2016. The final year of this competition will be 2017. The Center also produces original theatrical performances in conjunction with some of its Feature Exhibitions, in order to highlight constitutional topics and celebrate American freedoms. Constitution High School - In 2006, the National Constitution Center (NCC) partnered with the School District of Philadelphia and the Annenberg Foundation to undertake a bold educational experiment: the opening of Constitution High School (CHS), a public school with a focus on U.S. history and democracy. Since that time, the NCC has worked closely with the students and teachers of CHS to provide curricular materials, instruction, and programming for the school. Among its many initiatives with CHS, the Center runs a four-phase workshop series help students participating in National History Day (NHD) to develop critical questions about their topics, and to hone their strategies for researching and executing their projects. In 2012, the Center developed a new educator resource, The Constitution Happened Here website, which includes student projects, curriculum, and encourages groups to upload their own projects to the website. Most recently, CHS students participated in the development and execution of our Policing in a More Perfect Union programan interactive new training module designed for police officers which emphasizes the Bill of Rights, police legitimacy and community engagement. Policing in a More Perfect Union - Policing in a More Perfect Union was created in 2015 in partnership with Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and the Philadelphia Police Department. The program is designed to give police officer recruits a historical understanding of the constitutional rights and restrictions that are defined in the Bill of Rights. Policing in a More Perfect Union also examines the history of policing in a democratic society, and provides a forum for new officers to discuss the importance of their role in protecting the rights of all citizens.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4bTown Hall Town Hall Programs - As America's Town Hall, the National Constitution Center brings the leading conservative and liberal thought leaders together to debate the Constitution on all media platforms.
