DescThe Consumer Marketing program is comprised of the Consumer Marketing Division (Advertising, Public Relations and Strategic Alliances) and the Corporate Strategy and Program Metrics Division (CSPM). The Consumer Marketing Division is tasked with creating awareness of, and interest in, cotton among consumer and trade audiences. This is accomplished through an integrated platform of traditional and digital advertising, engagement with the media, and activities and events that directly contact consumers. The Cotton. Its Your Favorite for a Reason campaign continued in 2016. The campaign featured real women and men explaining why cotton is their favorite and communicated the physical benefits of the fiber while reminding consumers to check their labels and shop cotton. The 360 degree campaign reached consumers through TV, Cottons consumer web site, TheFabricOfOurLives.com, digital media and point of purchase. A total of 3,472 TV exposures appeared along with over 100MM video views online and more than 800,000 clicks to TheFabricOfOurLives.com. Over half of fashion females said the commercials make them think about what their clothes are made of; 49% were intrigued to find out more; 43% said the commercials make them think differently about cotton; and 46% are much/somewhat more interested in cotton. Public Relations supported consumer facing company initiatives such as the Rue La La + Cotton Pop-up Shop, the Blue Jeans Go Green program, the #ShopCotton Mall Program, the generic consumer program in China, and the Lifestyle Monitor Survey and defense of cottons reputation. Strategic Alliances continued with the Blue Jeans Go Green program by working with organizations across the country for collection and distribution. Cottons first pop-up shop in collaboration with online style destination Rue La La took place as well as a fall inspired website takeover on RueLaLa.com. Cottons national mall program took place in 30 participating malls across the country. Lastly, to further focus on point-of-sale activations online, a Cotton brand showcase was curated on JCPenny.com. CSPM led efforts to identify opportunities and threats for cotton using market intelligence data gathered through ongoing studies of consumer attitudes from the Lifestyle Monitor survey, assessments of cottons share at retail through the Retail Monitor research and comprehensive global economic research and analysis. Work completed by CSPM during 2016 includes, but is not limited to, the review of data on more than 130,000 products offered at retail in the U.S. in order to evaluate cottons market share in key categories and to communicate (to internal staff) those areas that are under threat; the evaluation of 9,500 U.S. and 7,000 global consumers to understand key trends and market opportunities for cotton products in various areas; the management and analysis of global quantitative research to garner insights into opportunities; the analysis of research to uncover opportunities to utilize the Seal of Cotton trademark to spur fiber label checking and cotton purchases; tracking and management of large-scale consumer and retail research in the Chinese market; the management of Cotton Incorporateds program metrics; and the delivery of market outlook presentations related to changes in cotton prices and the impact on the supply chain in the U.S. and internationally. The establishment of a comprehensive database of monthly apparel and home furnishing imports (over 2,100 different product classifications) allows for changes in cottons share and average products to be tracked and quantified in terms of their raw fiber bale equivalence. During 2016, CSPM responded to over 250 information requests, participated in over 180 meetings and presentations, authored nearly 190 publications, videos, and podcasts, and worked on nearly 70 projects.Desc

DescThe Global Supply Chain Marketing program consists of two divisions: Cotton Management System (CMS) and Global Supply Chain Marketing (GSCM). The Cotton Management System software team continued to support MILLNet 4.8.010 software, which is the final release of the MILLNet 4.0 series. The MILLNet 5.0 software was released in the third quarter of 2016 to our MILLNet32 users as a complete replacement of the old software. MILLNet32 software is no longer supported. We are currently working on the conversion programs to convert our MILLNet software users to MILLNet 5.0 targeted for first part of the first quarter of 2017. The CMS teams assisted customers over 3,900 times during the year and conducted 80 service visits in various countries. New EFS System licensees were signed in Peru, Vietnam and Guatemala. The GSCM division conducted more than 800 meetings with more than 170 companies. Staff from the GSCM division exhibited at 12 global tradeshows during 2016. Several major shows continue to be a primary focus of division efforts, including the Outdoor Retailer Show, Premiere Vision, and Kingpins Denim shows. Cotton Incorporated and Cotton Council International exhibited in a joint booth at the Intertextile Shanghai tradeshow. This is the worlds largest textile tradeshow which hosts over 4,000 exhibitors and over 70,000 attendees. The Cotton LEADS program continues to gain momentum as a platform for communicating information about responsible U.S. cotton production to retailers, brands, manufacturers, and industry organizations worldwide. Cotton Incorporated participates in this program with the National Cotton Council of America, the Cotton Foundation, Cotton Australia, and Cotton Council International. In 2016, 74 new partners joined the program thus reaching a total of 436 partners. Technology adoptions continued to drive the marketing efforts for cotton among the industry. In one of the largest product adoptions in 2016, a major outdoor performance brand introduced numerous cotton products based on Cotton Incorporateds technology innovations and products shown to them over the past two years. The company introduced a line of technical knits featuring the TransDRY moisture management technology and increased their assortment of cotton-rich blend products that were not previously in their line. Additionally, the company introduced a collection of apparel made from U.S. cotton with a U.S. based supply chain. This collection was featured prominently through their marketing efforts, called attention to the use of U.S. grown cotton, and referenced advancements in growing practices implemented by U.S. producers. The TOUGH COTTON technology was adopted in two large-scale programs in 2016, representing the largest technology adoptions in terms of bales of cotton impacted. A major mass retailer introduced a line of childrens knit leggings and casual pants featuring the TOUGH COTTON technology and required a years worth of support by Cotton Incorporated staff to train the retailers global mill suppliers on how to apply the technology and provide testing and verification of performance. In major mass market retailers and drug chains, new private branded nonwovens programs and products were launched in the U.S. Other programs originally launched a year ago were expanded in 2016. Elsewhere in the world, new feminine hygiene programs continue to be offered in Asian and European countries. GSCM staff worked with two very large Mexican brands to switch from a 50/50 cotton/polyester blend to a 100% cotton composition on baby products and used the Seal of Cotton trademark as a marketing tool. The first company estimates sales of 900,000 pieces a year while the second projects over a million pieces a year. Fifty-one technical education workshops were held in 2016 with 1,707 attendees from major brands and retailers. The purpose of these workshops was to provide detailed technical information and training on relevant topics important for cotton. The COTTON UNIVERSITY Web site is a marketing platform and educational resource (www.cottonuniversity.org). It is the leading innovative education and information resource for current and emerging textile industry professionals who are actively seeking connections to cotton. In 2016, there were 4,165 new individuals registered bringing the total for the year to 17,935 registered users, 145,087 sessions, and 943,073 page views. Five webinars were held on a variety of topics ranging from technical services on skewing to millennials use of feminine hygiene products. Webinars reached more than 500 companies.Desc

DescThe Research and Development program consists of the Fiber Quality Research division and the Product Development and Implementation division. Fiber Quality Research consisted of 13 outside research projects for 2016. Projects fell under the major program activities of improving breeder sample testing, improving existing fiber measurements, developing databases of fiber quality information, feasibility studies on new measurements, and studies focused on the potential of current U.S. cotton fiber quality. Product Evaluation Laboratory (PEL) activities continued to focus on normal day-to-day testing. Routine testing on high volume instrument inter-lab evaluations included 20 proficiency sets for the year and the lab also provided testing for the USDA-AMS on 16 sets of calibration cottons. A total of eight proficiency tests for fabric and two for yarn were also completed this year. Testing services were active for all areas of research and implementation for both Agricultural & Environmental Research and Product Development & Implementation divisions. Product Development and Implementation (PDI) had several areas of accomplishments. First, research into methods and technologies that improved quality, provided cost reductions, and improved efficiencies during production demonstrated to supply chains that cotton will remain the fiber of choice for many reasons. Through both the development and implementation of non-fluorine chemistries for Cotton Incorporateds moisture management technologies, it was discovered that performance and costs are not sacrificed with substitutions that are mandated by the industry. In addition, a substitute for formaldehyde-containing chemistry used for wrinkle resistant finishing was discovered. This non-formaldehyde product is applied without any process modifications, achieving the same or better performance than the traditional chemistry. Implications for this market are significant. Finding a non-formaldehyde product has been an objective since the inception of wrinkle resistant finishing for 100% cotton products 50 years ago. An analysis of the life cycle of cotton fiber and fabrics was updated. The new 2016 Life Cycle Assessment of Cotton Fiber and Fabric Executive Summary was completed in 2016 and the final report is being prepared for public distribution in 2017. The updated metrics are being analyzed for future research directives and as a baseline for industry presentations. Staff members were actively involved in the standardization and reporting metrics related to sustainability efforts, which include guidelines for reducing potential impacts. Being actively involved in industry organizations proved beneficial for Cotton Incorporateds proactive response to Sustainability Leadership. Creating new cotton products that compete with synthetics, especially in athletic, athleisure, and casual wear markets, was a challenge but not without opportunities. A number of newly developed products demonstrated how cotton and cotton-rich fabrics can compete and even out-perform synthetics in many of the aforementioned market categories. A high level of interest in those fabrics is evident by the number of requests reported for samples and technical information. Achievements were also made in the development of nonwoven flushable wipes that will increase cottons market share in this non-traditional category. Many other research objectives will carry over into, as well as be initiated, in 2017. Such projects will include newness retention for improved quality, and expanding cotton into performance categories such as smart textiles, conductive materials, applications of cotton for 3D printing, and e-textiles, just to name a few.Desc

ExplanationThe Company is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code, except for any unrelated business income. There was no unrelated business income earned during the years ended December 31, 2016 and 2015, and thus, no provision for income taxes has been made. The Company accounts for uncertainty in income taxes using a recognition threshold of more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by the appropriate taxing authority. Measurement of uncertainty occurs if the recognition threshold has been met. Management believes that there were no uncertain tax positions that met the recognition threshold in 2016 or 2015. The Companys tax returns are open for examination for years 2013 through 2015.ExplanationTxt
