MissionSage Bionetworks is a strategic research organization with a mission to coordinate and link academic and commercial biomedical researchers, patients and citizens through a Commons that represents a new paradigm for genomics intellectual property, researcher cooperation and contributor evolved resources. This mission has several interdependent themes, including: conducting research on network models of disease; building the computational platform for the Commons; and activating public engagement. Sage Bionetworks is a non-profit research organization that seeks to develop predictors of disease and accelerate health research through the creation of open systems, incentives, and standards. We create strategies and platforms that empower researchers to share and interpret data on a colossal scale, crowdsource tests for new hypotheses, and contribute to knowledge through community challenges.MissionDesc

DescResearch Communities and Challenges: Sage Bionetworks conducts research independently as well as with collaborators worldwide across a variety of disease areas. We work to redefine how complex biological data is gathered, shared and used through open systems, incentives, and norms. Our work includes the building of platforms and services and undertaking research developing predictors relating to health. Major research projects initiated in 2016 included: *Cancer Systems Biology Consortium (CSBC) - Sage was named as the Coordinating Center for the NCI funded CSBC and Physical Sciences in Oncology Network program. This five-year award builds on the work of the NCI funded Sage Bionetworks' Center for Cancer Systems Biology from 2010 through 2015. * Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-Onset AD (MODEL-AD) Consortium - MODEL-AD builds upon the open-science approach and the big-data infrastructure established by the ongoing AMP-AD and M2OVE-AD Consortia. MODEL-AD focuses on the development of a new generation of 40 rodent models representing late onset AD to support disease biology and preclinical drug development. Sage runs the Knowledge Portal, the distribution site for data, analysis results, analytical methodology and research tools generated by the consortium. * iAtlas - Sage, together with the Institute for Systems Biology, was funded by the Cancer Research Institute to build iAtlas, an online database and web resource designed to help basic and clinical researchers navigate immunological data across multiple tumor types. * Tumor neoantigEn SeLection Alliance (TESLA) - In 2016, the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy and the Cancer Research Institute launched TESLA, a global research alliance with 30 public and private groups to advance the development of more effective personalized cancer treatments. Sage will play a key role managing the bioinformatics and data analysis. In 2016, Sage continued to support the following research communities using Synapse to organize and share data as well as insights derived from their collaborations: * AMP AD Knowledge Portal - a premier repository and workspace for multi-omic data generated through the AMP-AD, M2OVE-AD and MODEL-AD consortia, a public private partnership with the goal of accelerating the development of new drugs for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. * Colorectal Cancer Consortium - a collection of colorectal cancer researchers and data scientists from 15 academic, pharmaceutical, and non-profit partners, which represents the first effort to generate consensus cancer subtypes, taking a major step toward precision medicine in CRC. * CommonMind Consortium - a public-private pre-competitive partnership with the goal to generate and analyze large-scale genomic data from human subjects with neuropsychiatric disease and to make this data and the analytical results broadly available. Initial findings were published in September 2016. * Infectious Disease Resilience project - a project designed to identify common characteristics of individuals that are resilient to infectious disease as a mechanism to understand the underlying biology. Initial analysis of nearly 600,000 genomes was completed in 2016. * mPower Public Researcher Portal - a data access point for the mobile app-based study piloting new approaches to monitoring key indicators of Parkinson Disease progression and diagnosis. An updated version of the mPower iPhone study was released in 2016, the first to use Apple's new CareKit platform. * Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium (PCBC) - an NIH sponsored effort to identify and characterize progenitor cell lineages and to develop new strategies related to the transplantation of these cells. * PsychENCODE Consortium - a public integrated resource for human brain data with a focus on autism, mood disorders and psychoses. 2016 marked the first public release of data generated by the Consortium. * Synodos Consortium - a first-of-its-kind Neurofibromatosis research collaboration dedicated to defeating the rare genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 2. * The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) - with data from 12 cancers, TCGA is an ongoing effort to simultaneously analyze molecular platforms for patterns across cancer types.Desc

DescMobile Health Sage's Mobile Health program is built around Bridge, a cloud-based collaborative science platform designed to incorporate open data, patient wisdom and public involvement into biomedical research. Bridge was first used to support the initial set of mobile app-based research studies launched on Apple's ResearchKit in 2015. Sage's work in mobile health continued to expand in 2016 and included the following projects: * PMI All of Us - Sage was named as a collaborator with The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in the Precision Medicine Initiative All of Us program to engage over one million participants in a study to improve the ability to prevent and treat disease based on individual differences in lifestyle, environment and genetics. Sage is responsible for the patient consent and data governance, community outreach and participant engagement aims of this five-year NIH funded program. Sage is also engaged in the scientific and software engineering work to develop new methodologies for measuring symptoms of health and disease. * Chronic Anemia - Development began in 2016 for this quality of life observational study conducted in partnership with Celgene. The study incorporates wearable and mobile technologies to assess mobility, cardiovascular health, cognitive performance, and quality of life assessments. * Football Players Health Study - Sage managed the design, development, and data hosting services for the Harvard TeamStudy Research Kit app, launched in March 2016. This study recruits both ex-NFL players and the general public to better understand the long-term effects of professional football on players' health. * Melanoma Mole Mapper - Mole Mapper, an app-based research study conducted by OHSU, is an effort to better understand melanoma by helping people track their own skin lesions with photographs. Sage supported the launch of the iPhone version of Mole Mapper in 2015 and released Mole Mapper Android in 2016. * Multiple Sclerosis - With an industry partner, Sage customized the mPower mobile app to assess the ability of mobile technology to monitor the severity of MS symptoms and to track relapse. * Parkinson Disease - In 2016, Sage released several new versions of mPower, the mobile health Parkinson's disease study launched with the introduction of Apple's ResearchKit in 2015. In March 2016, Sage released the first mPower dataset, representing millions of data points from over 9,500 participants participating in this first-of-its-kind mobile health study. * Sarcoidosis - Sage supported the development of a mobile app to support this University of Pennsylvania study focused on patient quality of life in 2016. The study launched in early 2017. * Resilience Project - Sage developed an iPhone app to support the Mount Sinai School of Medicine study on how genetic variation leads to resistance to a spectrum of common childhood genetic disorders.Desc
