DescKW in Schools From its inception, KnowledgeWorks has focused on creating personalized learning environments that engage students and help each individual thrive in college, career and civic life. Three years ago KnowledgeWorks entered the national conversation about personalized learning and competency based education (CBE) behind a concentration of thoughtful policy briefs focused on federal policy reform, aligned advocacy, and partner engagement. This body of work, combined with 15 years of on-the-ground experience in innovative school design, implementation, continuous improvement and collective impact, quickly established KnowledgeWorks as a thought leader and trusted resource for policymakers and other organizations launching statewide and local personalized learning and CBE initiatives. These leaders are now turning to KnowledgeWorks for support bringing to life the competency-based learning communities that their policies have enabled. As a result, in fiscal year 2016 KnowledgeWorks moved from policy to practice in the personalized learning and CBE space. The Organization recruited national personalized learning and CBE leader Virgel Hammonds as its first 'Chief Learning Officer', developed a technical assistance approach and secured three pilot sites to launch its prototype systems of support for personalized learning and CBE. Third-party evaluator, RMC, was engaged to provide baseline and formative data from the three pilot sites: RSU2 in Augusta, Maine; Mesa County Valley School District in Grand Junction, Colorado; and Marysville Exempted Village School District in Marysville, Ohio. Lessons learned through the analysis of interventions and outcomes in these sites will guide the design and implementation of KnowledgeWorks' new portfolio of personalized learning and CBE products and services. By the close of fiscal year 2016, the personalized learning and CBE team had developed a robust pipeline in Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas, suggesting strong demand for personalized learning and CBE services in fiscal year 2017 and beyond.Desc

$2,455,629$235,280$34,250Policy & Strategic Foresight In fiscal year 2016, KnowledgeWorks worked closely with policymakers, national organizations, and other education stakeholders to drive demand for personalized learning, especially with regard to the passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Throughout the year, KnowledgeWorks worked deeply with several state departments of education and additional state-level constituents; including our home state of Ohio, Connecticut, South Carolina, Kentucky, North Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin; on aligning strategies to provide districts with the flexibility to scale personalized learning. In addition, KnowledgeWorks' published The Shifting Paradigm of Teaching: Personalized Learning According to Teachers, an-depth look at how teachers lead implementation of personalized learning in their classrooms. At the federal level, KnowledgeWorks successfully advocated for inclusion of more than a dozen policy recommendations in the newly enacted ESSA. These recommendations included a new Innovative Assessment and Accountability Demonstration Authority as well as provisions that enable states to build or expand networks of early college high schools. Once ESSA was signed into law, KnowledgeWorks worked closely with the U.S. Department of Education to ensure the regulatory process did not create additional barriers to personalized learning. KnowledgeWorks also released several pieces of guidance to help states leverage the opportunities in the law to design education systems that align accountability, school improvement, assessment, educator workforce, and extended learning opportunity policies to create a cohesive system that prepares all students for success from cradle to career. KnowledgeWorks continued to exercise national thought leadership around the future of learning through publications, partnerships, and stakeholder engagements. Key publications and presentations included KnowledgeWorks' fourth comprehensive forecast on the future of learning, The Future of Learning: Education in the Era of Partners in Code; keynote presentations for Grantmakers for Education, Education Commission of the States, the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, the Orange County STEM Institute, ReSchool Colorado, and Fundaci n Televisa; "Exploring the Future Education Workforce: New Roles for an Expanding Learning Ecosystem and the companion simulation website, VibrantEd (vibraned.org); "The Future of Learning in the Pittsburgh Region and related workshops; "Ubique Academy: A School That's Everywhere, for Everyone," for which KnowledgeWorks placed in the top four in The Mind Trust's inaugural charter school design challenge; and "Learning on the Block: Could Smart Transactional Models Help Power Personalized Learning?" In addition, external publications included "Brave New World: What Will Education Look Like in 2025?" in The American School Board Journal and two articles on new possibilities for learning in 2025 for SEEN Magazine.
$379,318$59,579Grant-makingThe Grant making program provided approximately $1.9 million in grants and contributions to 87 organizations.
$1,827,199$1,741,376Student Lending Programs KnowledgeWorks served approximately 2,500 students during the fiscal year through its student lending programs.

ExplanationThe Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the IRS and all state jurisdictions where it operates. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the Foundation's financial position, statement of activities, or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at June 30, 2016 and 2015. In the event interest and penalties accrued on unrecognized tax benefits, the Foundation would recognize such amounts as a component of income tax expense.ExplanationTxt
