DescFounded in 1898, ASTM International provides a forum in which a broad range of stakeholders from around the world come together to create voluntary consensus standards that serve as the building blocks of international trade, product quality, and public safety. ASTMs standards are developed by some 30,000 individual members who represent multinational corporations, small businesses, government, and academia. ASTM also offers ways for business and industry to better use our standards through training, certification programs, and laboratory proficiency testing. Following are examples of how ASTM staff and members support our mission to serve global societal needs, positively impact public health and safety, consumer confidence, and overall quality of life, helping our world work better. New Committees and Subcommittees Address Emerging Societal Needs: The lifeblood of ASTMs work is its technical committees, comprised of volunteer stakeholders who drive standards development. In 2015: - Industry stakeholders came to ASTM to form a new technical committee, F46 on Aerospace Personnel. Members of this committee have begun developing internationally accepted standards that define the core competencies for maintenance technicians and others. Employers will benefit from broader and more uniform acceptance of expected knowledge and skills. This committees work also addresses looming workforce retirements and shortages while improving job opportunities for thousands who work in this field and increasing public safety. - Under several other existing committees, new subcommittees that will help improve health, safety, and the environment were formed on: 1.) Burner fuels and diesel fuel oils (petroleum and lubricants committee) 2.) Education and workforce development (nanotechnology committee) 3.) Water use and conservation (sustainability committee) 4.) Rubber recycling (rubber committee) 5.) Environment, health and safety (additive manufacturing committee) 6.) Freestyle terrain jump features (snow skiing committee) 7.) Torch fuels (consumer products committee) New Standards Protect Consumers: A large number of ASTM standards protect consumers by establishing safety requirements for products used in our everyday lives. Here are just a few of many examples of how ASTM standards were introduced and used to help protect citizens in 2015: - ASTMs sports equipment committee published a standard for womens lacrosse headgear, which was developed by experts from the lacrosse community, the medical field, the biomechanics industry, and product testing laboratories. - ASTMs consumer products committee developed a new safety standard for labeling and packaging individually wrapped liquid-detergent laundry packets to help prevent accidental ingestion. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission adopted ASTMs fuel-container standard, which helps prevent injury from gasoline burns. - The ASTM standard for drywall was cited in the U.S. Federal Register, fulfilling a goal of the Drywall Safety Act of 2012 to create a standard for limited sulfur content in drywall. Supporting the Growth of Smart Manufacturing: New technologies are rapidly transforming manufacturing, resulting in greater efficiencies, cost savings, and better employment opportunities. Here are just a few of ASTMs contributions to smart manufacturing in 2015: - ASTMs Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee continued to provide the opportunity for stakeholders across diverse smart manufacturing technologies to discuss innovations, standards development, and how ASTM can work with new partners in these areas. - A new standard was developed by ASTMs committee on 3D imaging systems that will help evaluate the performance of laser scanners used in 3D imaging. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration adopted two ASTM nanotechnology standards to its List of Recognized Standards. Global Outreach Supports Economic Development and Global Trade: In line with World Trade Organization principles, ASTMs open standards development process and its state-of-the-art internet-based tools welcome and support stakeholder participation from all nations. In addition, ASTM proactively reaches out to developing countries to help them establish strong standards infrastructures. More broadly, thousands of ASTM standards are cited by governments and others worldwide, helping strengthen global trade. In 2015, ASTMs global outreach efforts were very active in encouraging international contributions to and use of ASTM standards. - Our Memorandum of Understanding program (with nearly 100 participants) encourages the participation of technical experts from around the world in the ASTM standards development process and broadens the global acceptance and use of our standards. In 2015, MOUs were signed with: 1.) The African Organization for Standardization 2.) The Angolan Institute of Standardization and Quality 3.) The Institute for Standardization of Montenegro - ASTM also has programs that welcome staff members of MOU signatories for training stints at our headquarters. In 2015, we trained representatives from Costa Rica, Indonesia, Kenya, and Korea. - ASTM staff and volunteer technical committee members participated in 2015 in industry events around the world, raising awareness of our standards and encouraging participation in our process. Notable outreach was undertaken in the Middle East, Latin America, Asia Pacific, India, South Africa, and Europe. Outreach to Students and Teachers: Faced with limited classroom time and ambitious curricula, professors need easy ways to fit the critical subject of standardization into their syllabi. ASTMs academic outreach program helps educate the next generation of technical experts and leaders about the importance of standards. Some notable examples in 2015 include: - The development of a new, multilingual toolkit for professors, providing all the tools educators need to teach about standards: education modules and presentations, curricula, videos, and more. - The awarding of three $10,000 scholarships to deserving graduate students, and several additional smaller project grants. - The launch of a pilot program to encourage the participation of emerging professionals in ASTM technical committee activities. About ASTM International: ASTM International provides a global forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevance, ASTM standards are used in research and development, product testing, codes, and quality systems. Combined with our innovative business services, ASTM standards are a critical element of the information infrastructure that guides manufacturing and trade in the global economy. ASTMs membership comprises 30,000 technical experts from over 140 countries. These technical experts serve on one or more of ASTMs 145 technical committees, developing standards for a broad range of areas including metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, aviation, energy, the environment, consumer products, electronics, medical services and devices, computerized systems, homeland security and much more. Over 12,000 ASTM standards are published each year and can be found in the 80+ volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards or online on the ASTM website. ASTM International also facilitates the generation and dissemination of technical standards information through various specialized publications such as journals, manuals and monographs on specific technical standards topics, as well as continuing technical education and training programs for industry and government.Desc
