IT CONSISTS OF PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, ARTIFACTS AND WORKS ON PAPER. MANY OF THE WORKS IN ARCS COLLECTION WERE ORIGINALLY GATHERED BY THE HARMON FOUNDATION IN THE EARLY TO MID-20TH CENTURY AND DEEDED TO THE UNITED CHURCH BOARD FOR HOMELAND MINISTRIES (UCBHM), WHICH DONATED THE WORKS TO AMISTAD IN 1983. ARTWORK IN THE ORIGINAL GIFT INCLUDES IMPORTANT EXAMPLES FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO THE BURGEONING YEARS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN VISUAL ARTS DURING THE 20TH CENTURY, OTHERS AND CONTEMPORARY BLACK ART. THEY REPRESENT MORE THAN 150 YEARS OF ART AND ARTIFACTS FROM THE AFRICAN DIASPORA. THESE WORKS WERE CREATED BY MASTERS OF THE GENRE, AND VISUALLY NARRATE THE EXPERIENCES OF ITS COMMUNITIES WITH RELIGIOUS, SOCIAL, AND LIBERATION THEMES REFLECTING REALISM, ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM AND BLACK EXPRESSIONISM. THEY ARE HIGHLY REQUESTED FOR SCHOLARLY RESEARCH AND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING AT NATIONAL AND GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS.
