DescEducation FY 16 SummaryThe Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art offered a great spectrum of programs that engaged and inspired audiences to connect with the museum's collections and special exhibitions. During this fiscal year, education activity and programs drew over 36% of the Museum's annual attendance of 102,378 and involved numerous partners. Adult programs investigated major exhibitions Warhol & Mapplethorpe: Guise and Dolls and Gothic to Goth: Romantic Era Fashion & Its Legacy, exploring art historical and sociocultural movements as well as the artists behind them. The opening of the Art and Curiosity Cabinet provided an opportunity to consider the historic origins of the modern museum and the practice of collecting with faculty from across the country. The reinstallation of the museum's European galleries was a highlight of the year, encouraging record attendance at our Envisionfest Community Day with extensive public programming. Over 18,000 students, teachers, families and adults participated in 1,450 guided tours with one of the museum's 92 docents. The monthly free Second Saturdays for Families program has now attracted over 40,000 visitors since it was conceived in 2009 as a means of encouraging active intergenerational learning in a museum setting. A special Artist Residency with MATRIX 174 artist Vanessa German deeply engaged students from several Hartford public schools and youth-serving non-profits in performance activities, writing, and art-making workshops.Desc

Part II, Line 9:The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art reflects expenditures relating to its easements in its operating revenue and expenditures.
Part III, Line 1a:Collections of works of art acquired through purchase or donation since the Museum's inception are not recognized as assets in the accompanying statement of financial position. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved and cared for. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets, if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the temporarily restricted net asset class. Museum policy limits the use of proceeds from deaccessions or insurance solely for acquisition of other art objects.
Part III, Line 4:The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art houses a collection of more than 45,000 objects including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, works on paper, costumes and textiles, and videos, ranging in date from antiquity to contemporary and including works from most of the continents. The Wadsworth Atheneum is one of Connecticut's principal cultural and civic institutions and a museum of international significance. The museum is a not-for-profit organization that ensures the public has access to artwork that is artistically and historically signficant. In addition to permanent collection displays, the Atheneum presents special exhibitions of loaned works. A wide range of interpretive and educational programs for children, families, and adults, public and school tours are offered regularly.
Part V, Line 4:The organization's endowment funds are for the use of operational, exhibition, and programming support, as well as the purchase of works of art.
Part X, Line 2:The Museum has no unrecognized tax benefits at June 30, 2016. The Museum's U.S. Federal and state information returns prior to fiscal year 2013 are closed and management continually evaluates expiring statutes of limitations, audits, proposed settlements, changes in tax law and new authoritative rulings. If the Museum were to incur unrelated business income taxes, it would recognize interest and penalties associated with any tax matters as part of the income tax provision and include accrued interest and penalties with the related tax liability in the statement of financial position.
