Nova Southeastern University goes beyond its primary mission by reaching out to the community with diverse service programs and community-based research. NSU has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with its prestigious "community engaged and "high research activity" designations. NSU delivers tangible benefits, including junior kindergarten through doctoral education, physical infrastructure, a professional workforce, employment opportunities, delivery of health care and law services in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, lifelong learning options, community-service initiatives, and public access to cultural and scholarly experiences. NSU continues to grow its research activities. More than 200 research projects are currently under way at NSU, including studies on cardiovascular disease, anti-cancer therapies, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, coral reef restoration, stem cells, and wildlife DNA forensics, among other subjects. The university's commitment to scientific and technological exploration led to the opening of NSU's Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center building and the Center for Collaborative Research (CCR), slated to open in 2016. The CCR is expected to bring multiple disciplines together, with students and NSU faculty members partnering with professionals and organizations outside of the NSU community-furthering cutting-edge research and developing technologies that will benefit the global community.Desc

Part III, Line 1a:The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale acquires art for its collection through purchase or gift. As permitted by SFAS 116 (ASC 958), accounting for contributions received and contributions made, the Museum does not include its collection items as assets in the consolidated statement of financial position. Accordingly, no value has been assigned to the Museum's art collection. The University's policy requires any proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for the collection. Proceeds from the sale of collection items and expenditures for collection items purchased are reflected in the consolidated statement of activities separately from revenues and expenses.
Part III, Line 4:Nova Southeastern University operates the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. In service to the public, the mission of the Museum is to actively engage diverse audiences in the appreciation of works of art through innovative exhibitions, education programs, publications, and collection activities. This mission is consistent with the University's exempt educational purpose.
Part V, Line 4:The University's endowment consists of approximately 287 individual endowments established for a variety of purposes. The University considers the following factors in making a determination to appropriate or accumulate donor restricted funds: a) the purposes of the institution b) the intent of the donors of the endowment fund c) the terms of the applicable instrument d) the long and short term needs of the institution e) general economic conditions f) possible effects of inflation or deflation g) the other resources of the institution h) perpetuation of the endowment
Part X, Line 2:Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes: The University follows the guidance contained in ASC 740, Income Taxes. ASC 740 addresses the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an entity's financial statements and prescribes a threshold of more-likely-than-not for recognition and de-recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. There were no uncertain tax positions recorded in the consolidated financial statements for fiscal years 2015 and 2014.

ExplanationNSU Office of Sponsored Programs maintains a written, formal policy that outlines the procedures and guidelines for monitoring the use of sponsored funds by subrecipients. Prior to entering into a subaward agreement, NSU will assess subrecipient risk based on factors such as financial stability, experience with federal awards, quality of management systems and internal controls, and prior audit results. NSU will determine what type of monitoring activities are warranted based on risk, and develop a subrecipient monitoring plan. NSU will subsequently enter into an subaward agreement with each subrecipient which properly identifies prime award information, compliance requirements, and subrecipient monitoring documents required, as applicable. Throughout the period of performance, the Principal Investigator for the project monitors the programmatic activities of the subrecipient; determining that appropriate progress has been made; receiving, reviewing and retaining copies of required programmatic reports; and reviewing/approving subrecipient invoices prior to submitting to the NSU Office of Sponsored Programs for approval and processing. As part of the initial risk assessment and throughout the period of performance of the subaward, NSU will collaboratively review any deficiencies pertaining to the sponsored award that are identified through audits or other means, and issue a management decision. Schedule I, Part I, Line 2: Institutional grants awarded to students are recorded to individual student accounts and to each college departmental account using specific contra revenue account codes. The number of recipients and amount of awards varies by center and program. Funds set aside for scholarships are budgeted annually and included in the University's budget plan approved by the Board of Trustees.ExplanationTxt

Part I, Line 1aSupplemental Compensation Information: Line 1- First class travel- Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., all travel must be by the most direct or economical route. Higher fares may be reimbursable only when coach accommodations would: (1) require circuitous routing; (2) require travel during unreasonable hours; (3) greatly increase the duration of the flight; (4) result in additional costs which would offset the transportation savings; (5) offer accommodations which are not reasonably adequate for the medical needs of the traveler. These exceptions will require the traveler to submit a letter of approval signed by their Dean or Vice President. Line 2-Travel for companions -Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., when a spouse or dependent accompanies the employee, the University will pay for only the travel costs of the employee. Occasionally, spouses of faculty and staff are asked to travel on University business. Spouse travel reimbursement by the University requires approval by a Dean or Officer, or their authorized representative. If the business purpose of the spousal travel is not properly documented, it will be taxed to the employee. Line 5-A housing allowance is provided to the president of the University. This allowance is fully taxable to the recipient. Line 7-The University pays for club dues on behalf of certain executives. These amounts are treated as taxable to the employee and included in his or her compensation.
Part I, Line 4aDuring calendar year 2014, Steven Wisotsky and Randolph Pohlman received payments totaling $279,762 and $63,044, respectively, through a Voluntary Separation Offer extended to eligible full-time faculty members in certain colleges.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 4Significant Changes to Governing Documents: NSU's bylaws were changed in order to add Section 3 to Article VIII, Officers of the Corporation, requiring the President of the university to be evaluated annually by the Board of Trustees. The revision was made to formalize the evaluation process in the by-laws even though it was not a change from how the evaluation process was conducted in the past or current year as disclosed in Form 990, Part VI, Line 15.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11Describe the process used by the organization to review this Form 990: The Form 990 is prepared by the Nova Southeastern University finance staff and presented to the University's outside tax accountants (KPMG, LLP) for review. After review by the outside tax accountants, a draft copy of the Form 990 and all required schedules are provided for review to the Vice President of Finance/Chief Financial Officer, the Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, and the President/Chief Executive Officer of the University. Upon completion of the internal review, the final form 990 and all required schedules are initially provided to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees and subsequently made available to the full Board of Trustees prior to filing.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cDescribe how the organization monitors and enforces compliance with its conflict of interest policy: Nova Southeastern University (NSU) maintains a written Code of Conduct Policy which provides an overview of requirements in complying with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and adhering to ethical standards by its officers, employees, representatives, and agents in conducting NSU business. To aid in the identification of and correction of any actual or perceived violations of the University's Code of Conduct Policy, NSU has a written Compliance Plan.
