DescNORTHSIDE CENTER FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT has been a leader in mental/behavioral health and education services for over six decades. We began innovative programs in 1946 for children and families in Harlem when none existed. We focused on clinical excellence and emphasized working with the strengths of families and the importance of children's self-esteem long before others did. Several of our programs were the first in the Harlem community and established the standard for care for many social service agencies. Today, Northside's programs still embody the spirit of innovation and commitment to principle established 68 years ago by Northside founders Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie P. Clark. We work to ensure that the over 1,000 children who visit us each day have the greatest opportunity to thrive. Through our dedication to the community and clinical expertise, Northside brings stability and hope to families facing critical life challenges and helps build brighter futures through comprehensive services and intervention in three critical areas: early childhood, behavioral/mental health, and educational support. A) BEHAVIORAL/MENTAL HEALTH CLINICAL PROGRAMS 1. Northside's behavioral health clinics provide youth and their families with psychiatric, psychopharmacological, and psychotherapy services. Clinical staff is trained in evidence-based treatment models including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused CBT (TFCBT), Parent Child Psychotherapy, Knowledge Empowers You (KEY), and Power Source. The clinics are located at our main site on 110th Street and our Central Harlem site on 135th Street. Our on-site clinic hours (110th and 135th Streets) are 8:00am - 8:00pm, Monday through Friday, and 9:30am - 3:30pm on Saturdays. We also have behavioral health clinics in our Clinics in Schools program. The school-based clinics provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to children in need; offer support to school personnel in addressing and managing challenging behaviors, medication management and family crises; and strengthen school, family, and community partnerships to improve outcomes for youth with serious mental health needs. The school clinics operate Monday through Friday, 9am - 6pm, depending on the schedules of parents who need after-school appointments. Clinics are located at: KIPP Infinity Charter School, KIPP High School, Central Park East High School and P.S. 161 Pedro Albizu Campos (K-8). Northside also offers the following specialized programs: 2. Through Northside's Preventive Service Unit, we offer Family Connections which provides specialized home-based support services for children and families experiencing domestic violence, abuse, sexual abuse and/or neglect. By helping parents and their children create a safe environment and enhancing family strengths, children can remain with their parents and avoid the foster care system. In 2014 this program provided services to 280 individuals and families - with 55% of participants falling in the infant to 9 year old age range. Project CARE (Commitment and Recovery Empowers) is a Family Treatment/Rehabilitation Intensive Prevention program geared towards families with significant substance abuse and mental health concerns. Services are family focused within the lens of the family's cultural context coupled with a holistic approach to rehabilitation. In 2014 this program provided individual and group counseling and case management to 120 individuals and families dealing with these difficult issues. A multi-disciplinary team recommends clinical interventions that require staff to meet with families two to three times per week in the initial phase and then follow a "step-down" process that continues services at a less intensive level for families who no longer need more frequent monitoring. The Preventive Services Unit operates 9:00am - 6:00pm, Monday through Friday, and 10:00am - 2:00pm on Saturdays. 3. The Home-Based Crisis Intervention Program (HBCI) helps seriously emotionally disturbed children and adolescents avoid psychiatric hospitalization through short-term, intensive, family-centered therapeutic and supportive services. Program therapists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help families learn the signs that precede an emotional crisis, the methods to avoid future crises, and the social and therapeutic resources available to them. 4. Our Creative Arts Therapy Program is one of very few programs in New York City that uses children and family art therapy groups to create a holistic and multi-faceted approach to help heal from sexual abuse. Children are grouped by age and gender in this 23 week cycle art therapy program. There is a parallel group for parents (non-offending) where they can process what has happened to their child and family. This innovative approach effectively keeps all invested in the process of recovering from the sexual abuse, and preventing future re-victimization. B) EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES Northside educational and after school programs complement our clinical and therapeutic services; building on the strengths of clients while remaining sensitive to their academic challenges. 1. At our Tutorial Center, Northside nurtures the academic success and intellectual creativity of children in kindergarten through 12th grade who may not benefit from traditional after-school programs. The Center's rich array of therapeutic, educational and recreational programs includes: - Homework Help ensures that students in the elementary afterschool program complete their assignments, keep up with their class work, and learn time management and organization and runs Monday through Friday, from 3:00pm - 6:00pm, and for several full days (8:00am - 6:00pm) during school holidays; - One-on-One Remedial Education fosters reading and writing skills of students with learning issues who are significantly delayed in literacy and math. The program operates for 32 weeks during the school year. Tutors meet with students after school from 3:30 - 7:00 pm, on Saturdays, as well as during the school day at our TECC, Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA) in Central Harlem, KIPP Infinity, and Central Park East 2 (CPE2). - For students who are below grade level, Northside tutors work intensively with them to improve their Writing Skills through creative, functional and remedial activities - individually and in groups. 2. Recreational and Therapeutic After School Program and Summer Day Camp are for typically developing children and children with special needs ages five to 12, running daily during the school year from 3:00 to 6:00pm, and full days during the summer. The children enjoy a host of creative, athletic and recreational activities designed to ensure the development of motor skills, appropriate socialization, sports skills, and fun. We recently started a karate program for our afterschool children which, besides delivering sound physical exercise, teaches self-confidence and respect - respect for others and for oneself. In children, these are exceptionally important life skills, especially for those who do not mature physically as fast as others. The self-confidence that comes from knowing how to do something, and how to protect oneself, reduces fear and improves self-esteem. This translates into good grades and leadership in school. - Our Summer Day Camp extends Northside's educational, therapeutic, and enrichment activities into the summer months for children with emotional and behavioral issues by including a morning Reading Laboratory, where Bank Street interns tutor students every day. While mornings focus on educational programming, afternoons are filled with recreation and offer field trips to destinations such as The New York Hall of Science, Sony Wonder Labs, The Bronx Zoo and The American Museum of Natural History. - Since 2006, we have offered the African Art and Culture After-School Program in collaboration with various museums. Designed to provide middle and high school students with the opportunity to experience African art and culture, the program encourages participants to appreciate the cultural heritage of Africa, the accomplishments of African people, and the children's own heritage. Over the years, museum staff and artists have offered numerous music, dance and craft workshops at Northside. A neighborhood museum is in the process of finishing and moving into their new building, which is directly across the street from Northside's main site on East 110th Street, so we anticipate an even more fruitful and vibrant collaboration. 3. Our Technology Center offers a range of learning-based computer activities for all Northside children and teens. Northside TECC school students have computer instruction every day during the school year and twice daily during the summer. All students learn to use Scholastic Keys, with children's versions of Microsoft Office: Max Write (Word), Max Show (PowerPoint), and Max Count (Excel). They also learn to use Internet researcDesc
