DescEdWorks, LLCEdWorks experienced success across multiple sites in FY2015, from its most mature schools to those in their first year of implementation. American Institutes for Research (AIR) completed a longitudinal study of EdWorks Early College sites in Ohio and found EdWorks' Early College High Schools (ECHS) have grown substantially in the past seven years, both in the number of students served and in their school-level indicators of success. The AIR study noted EdWorks schools are a unique brand of ECHS in Ohio that serves many economically disadvantaged students and student groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The EdWorks ECHS model was evaluated in this study using a quasi-experimental matching study and a robust set of pre-intervention student-level data to examine the extent to which EdWorks ECHSs impacts academic achievement. The results indicate that the students who enrolled in Fast Track ECHSs significantly outperformed a group of matched control students in reading, mathematics, science, writing, and social studies sections of the OGT. AIR also looked at comparative evidence of college access and success. Between 2006 and 2012, EdWorks schools closed a substantial ACT performance gap with other Ohio high schools. And by 2009, EdWorks ECHS outpaced non EdWorks schools in the percentage of graduates who took part in the ACT. Overall, the AIR findings indicate a positive impact of EdWorks ECHS enrollment on an important intermediate academic outcomes, and in Ohio, one that is tied to high school completion.Initial data from new EdWorks sites in New York, Delaware and Ohio point to continued strong performance across multiple states. An NCREST study of EdWorks sites in New York found students in the first graduating class of "Smart Scholar" sites earned as many as 51 college credits while in high school. A report of data in the first year of operation at new EdWorks STEM ECHS (schools focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in Delaware and Ohio, showed 95% of students earning college credits during their freshman year of high school. Finally, EdWorks continued to expand its Early College sites in Alabama during FY15.Desc

DescPolicy & Strategic ForesightFrom July 2014 to June 2015, KnowledgeWorks worked closely with policymakers, national organizations, and other education stakeholders to drive demand for radically personalized learning. Throughout the year, KnowledgeWorks worked deeply with several state departments of education; including our home state of Ohio, Connecticut, Alabama, and Kentucky; on aligning strategies to provide districts with the flexibility to scale personalized learning. In addition, KnowledgeWorks' published a state policy framework for scaling personalized learning containing state-level policy recommendations and guardrails that insure equality implementation. At the federal level, KnowledgeWorks helped advance an agenda for reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that would give states and districts the flexibility to build competency-based education systems, to strengthen the alignment between high school and postsecondary education, and to leverage the success of collective impact partnerships to close local disparities in student achievement. KnowledgeWorks' ESEA advocacy efforts led to the inclusion of more than a dozen recommendations in the U.S. Senate bill to advance these priorities including a new pilot program that would enable states to build competency-based assessment systems. In addition, KnowledgeWorks continued to exercise national thought leadership around the future of learning through publications, partnerships, and stakeholder engagements. Key publications and presentations included, "Innovating toward Vibrant Learning Ecosystems: Ten Pathways toward Transforming Learning," "Certifying Skills and Knowledge: Four Scenarios for the Future of Credentials," "Cultivating Interconnections for Vibrant and Equitable Learning Ecosystems and Katherine Prince's TEDxColumbus talk, "A Vision for Radically Personalized Learning and Huffington Post blog, "I Could Really Use a Learning Sherpa."Grant-makingThe Grant making program provided approximately $2.5 million in grants and contributions to 99 organizations.Student Lending ProgramsKnowledgeWorks served approximately 2,800 students during the fiscal year through its student lending programs.Desc

ExplanationThe Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the IRS and all state jurisdictions where it operates. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the Foundation's financial position, statement of activities, or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at June 30, 2015 and 2014. In the event interest and penalties accrued on unrecognized tax benefits, the Foundation would recognize such amounts as a component of income tax expense.ExplanationTxt
