All members of the Association shall consist of institutions of higher education, each of which qualifies under Section 115(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, or is exempt from Federal income taxation under Section 501(a) of such Codes as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of such Code, and is an organization described in Section 509(a)(1), (2), or (3) of such Codes (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States internal revenue law), and which meet the following additional criteria: 1. Automatic Membership Public universities or colleges that meet at least one of the following three criteria are qualified for A.P.L.U. membership without formal action by the Board of Directors (a) Institution is a Land Grant institution (1862, 1890, 1994) (b) Institution is classified in one of two Basic Classification categories from the 2005 Carnegie Classification of Instructional Programs (Source: 2005 Carnegie edition). Research (Very High) Research (High) (c) Institution is a current A.P.L.U. member in good standing. 2. Presumptive Membership Institutions that do not meet the criteria above may qualify for membership by meeting the research criteria below (a) and two of the three additional criteria (b, c, or d). Institutions will then be considered for membership by the A.P.L.U. Board of Directors and must be approved by the Board. |
