Activity Or MissionThe central mission of Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation (MWRIF) as a global leader in women's medical and health research is to advance knowledge in the field of reproductive biology and medicine, translate discoveries into improved health for women and their infants, and train the next generation of reproductive health research scholars. MWRIF is home for University of Pittsburgh medical research scientists who are engaged in health research that spans reproductive biology and development and diverse aspects of women's health. Key physiological processes and diseases that span a woman's entire life cycle are pursued, from the formation of germ cells and embryos through childhood and adolescence to reproductive life, pregnancy, menopause, and aging. MWRI researchers devoted to women's health research and medical research use a variety of basic, translational, and clinical investigative tools that support our central mission.ActivityOrMissionDesc

Schedule J, Part I, Line 3The Executive Director is dually employed by both the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). 100% of his time is spent on either his own medical research or his Executive Director responsibilities, so MWRIF is financially responsible for his total compensation. Each of the three organizations are involved in evaluating the ED's compensation taking into consideration accomplishments, responsibilities, and comparison to AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges) benchmarks. The initial salary as well as any subsequent adjustments must be approved by senior management of the University and UPMC, and also is approved by selected external members of the MWRIF Board. A written employment contract is used by both the University and UPMC to document all employment terms including compensation. All paperwork regarding the process and approvals is maintained by the respective organizations.
Schedule J, Part I, Line 7In addition to a base compensation from each employer, Dr. Sadovsky (ED) is eligible for incentive compensation as follows: *from UPMC, he is eligible for performance based incentive compensation as part of his employment contract. Performance against a list of predetermined goals is evaluated annually and payment made in the subsequent fiscal year. *From the University of Pittsburgh, he is eligible for a research incentive based on certain criteria established by the University for all researchers. This is tied to his own research lab and is not related to his function as Executive Director of MWRIF. Gerald Schatten, Sharon Hillier, Ian McGowan, Sharon Achilles, and Kyle Orwig are also eligible for the University of Pittsburgh research incentive mentioned above if they meet the criteria established by the University.
Schedule J, Part II(also Part VII Line 5) Arthur Scully, MWRIF VP of Development, is employed and compensated by the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Medical and Health Sciences Foundation but solely supports MWRIF. Form 990, Part I, Line 5All individuals who work in support of the mission of MWRIF are employed by either the University of Pittsburgh or the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. MWRIF is billed by each organization for the cost of salary and fringe benefits corresponding to the effort these individuals expend in support of the MWRIF mission. MWRIF records such costs as compensation on its financial statements.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aFocusing on seven key areas of discovery - reproductive development, pregnancy and newborns, gynecology, reproductive physiology and fertility, infectious diseases, female cancers, and women's wellness - Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation is conducting unprecedented research in: * Genomic and Epigenomic Networks Through the study of genetics and the changes that occur at a cellular level, physician-scientists are now able to identify cells responsible for birth defects, cancer, and other diseases. Magee is at the forefront of the research that is crucial to take the next step - to create preventative measures to develop more effective, less toxic therapies tailored to an individual patient's illness, making the promise of gender-specific, personalized medicine a reality. * Life Course Science Life course science studies the influence of early or midlife events on the health of the individual later in life and the future health of their children. For example, diverse factors play a significant role in future brain development and research has shown that low-birth-weight babies have a higher risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. By leading the research in this area, Magee scientists are creating better interventions for prevention of disease and improved health among women and their children. * Germ Cell Biology Magee has redefined aging for several conditions that affect mature women, such as menopause, osteoporosis, and pelvic floor health. Now, its physician-scientists are taking this innovative research a step further, focusing on the process of reproductive aging at a young age to better understand aging in ovarian and testicular germ cells, as well as in the placenta. By doing so, they will gain a clearer understanding of premature aging of these organs, and discover the impact on fertility, pregnancy, and general women's wellness. * Gender-based Biology and Personalized Medicine Through interaction with researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, Magee researchers are better defining the role of gender in many non-reproductive diseases. Probing beyond the X- or Y-chromosomes, they are better defining genomic gender, and the impact of female physiology on conditions that were historically only studied in males, which is essential for affecting a personalized approach to medicine and wellness.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2Directors Arthur Levine and Linda Melada have a family relationship.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11bAfter completion by the Manager of Accounting, the Form 990 is reviewed internally by the Director of Finance and externally by a representative of the National Exempt Organization Tax Services Division of Ernst and Young LLP. The Audit Committee, a sub-committee of the Board of Directors, then is engaged to review the Form 990 on behalf of the Board and provide a report to them prior to filing the return. The full Board of Directors is provided a copy of the Form prior to filing.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12cThe organization has a conflict of interest policy that is driven by the classification of individual as follows: * Board members are required to sign a formal conflict of interest questionnaire annually prior to the beginning of each fiscal year for which they are a member. The forms are reviewed internally by the VP of Development and Communications and actual or potential conflicts are reported to the Board Chair. * Designated individuals (managers and above, and any employee holding a position of influence or trust) supporting MWRIF who are employed by UPMC are required to follow their employer mandated conflict of interest policy which includes annual electronic disclosures, as well as additional disclosures as related circumstances change. These are reviewed and monitored by the UPMC Ethics and Compliance Committee. If potential and actual conflicts are identified, a Conflict Management Plan must be developed and submitted to the Committee. Failure to disclose potential conflicts or to follow the approved conflict management plan will result in disciplinary action. * Designated individuals (all faculty, staff with administrator IV title or above and any others designated based on their responsibilities) working at MWRIF who are employees of the University of Pittsburgh are required to follow their employer mandated conflict of interest policy which includes annual electronic conflict of interest disclosures, as well as additional disclosures as related circumstances change. These are reviewed by the individual's department head and reported to University senior management as well as maintained by the Conflict of Interest Committee. Potential or actual conflicts are handled by the employees first line supervisor and a management plan developed. The plan is submitted to senior management as well as the COI committee for review. Sanctions may be applied for non-compliance with the requirements of the policy or with management plans, including a letter of reprimand, special monitoring of future work, removal from the particular project, probation, suspension, salary reduction, or initiation of steps leading to possible reduction in rank or termination of employment.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15The Executive Director is dually employed by both the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). 100% of his time is spent on either his own medical research (about 46 hours/week average) or his Executive Director responsibilities (an additional 46 hours/week average, for a total of 92 hours/week average). MWIF is financially responsible for his total compensation and reimburses the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC for his compensation. The initial salary as well as any subsequent adjustments must be approved by senior management of the University and UPMC, and also is approved by selected external members of the MWRIF Board. All paperwork regarding the process and approvals is maintained by the respective organizations.
