DescSeattle University, founded in 1891, is a Jesuit Catholic university and law school located on 50 acres in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. Students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs within eight schools and colleges. In the academic year 2013-14, the University enrolled 7,422 students and awarded 1,381 bachelor's degrees or equivalents, 26 post-baccalaureates, 739 master's degrees, 29 post-master's certificates, and 308 professional degrees. Awards and high rankings for academic rigor, sustainability, community service and social justice are among Seattle University's touchstones of excellence. One of them is a Presidential Award from the White House for community service, a recognition received by only five universities. Here's a look at many of the honors bestowed on the university. Seattle University is one of the top 5 universities in the West, according to U.S. News & World Report: Best Colleges 2015. The university ranks fifth for its full range of undergraduate, master's and select doctoral degree programs. The university consistently has held a spot in the West's top ten for more than a decade. Seattle University also received high marks from U.S. News for being a best value school, ranking seventh in the West. Among U.S. News specialty rankings nationwide, the Albers School of Business and Economics ranks 14th for finance, the top program of its kind in the Northwest, and 18th for accounting. Albers is tied for 36th nationally among private business schools, and is the Northwest's top private business school. U.S. News ranked SU undergraduate engineering 34th nationally. Seattle University School of Law has the number one legal writing program in the nation. The part-time program is 25th in the U.S and the clinical program is 18th SU's law school is also among the most diverse in the country. The Albers School of Business and Economics' Professional MBA program is ranked 68th in the nation and second in the Northwest for graduate business programs. The accounting program ranks 14th among all the top schools in the nation, up from 19th last year. Hip, straightforward and consulted by millions of future students and their families, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2015 edition, considered 2,200 four-year colleges in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain before choosing just 300 institutions-the top 14 percent-to be included and Seattle University is among them. The guide is compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward Fiske, a leading independent voice in college admissions. Colleges of Distinction, a college guide that takes into account the success of graduates, the quality of teaching, graduation rates, class size and campus atmosphere, features Seattle University in its latest edition. High school college counselors nominate colleges and universities for inclusion in the national guide. Fewer than half of those considered are selected to be in the guide. Catholic Colleges of Distinction also showcases Seattle University among those schools that excel at four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Seattle University graduates with liberal arts, sciences and humanities degrees step into careers with starting wages that rival those of new graduates from elite Ivy League schools. SU ranks among the nation's top 10 colleges with the highest paid liberal arts graduates, according to College Factual, which challenges the status quo to help prospective students make better decisions about college. The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, a prestigious multi-year funding program, supports graduate-level researchers in the physical and social sciences. Nine Seattle University students have been selected in the past decade. In 2012, the White House honored Seattle University with the Presidential Award for community service, the highest recognition by the federal government to a college or university for its civic engagement, service learning and volunteerism. The university was one of only five universities in the nation to receive this honor and the only university cited as a Promise Neighborhoods recipient for coordinated, wrap-around, youth-focused service that supports the educational and social needs of children. A Seattle Times editorial called out the award and noted, "Seattle University serves as a national example of the difference higher education can make on its neighbors." Then-again in 2013-Seattle University set a precedent by earning national recognition for the second consecutive year, making the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction. The accolade acknowledges the university's overall commitment to service as well as its significant work to implement the Seattle University Youth Initiative, which unites the university and wider community in a long-term commitment to build a better future for young people starting with pre-kindergarten and continuing through college. In 2014, Seattle University once again was honored by the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in the following areas: Interfaith community service - one of four finalists for the top award in this category; general community service - honor roll with distinction; education - honor roll; and economic opportunity - honor roll. Among master's universities, Seattle University ranks third in the nation for the number of staff supporting community service, the number of academic courses that incorporate service as well as scholarships for community service, according to Washington Monthly September/October 2014 edition. Washington Monthly also included Seattle University in its top 10 based on the number of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps, relative to school size. For the third consecutive year, Seattle University ranks among the top 10 small schools in the nation to produce Peace Corps volunteers. With 15 alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps worldwide in 2014, SU tied for sixth. A total of 357 SU alumni have served since the Peace Corps began in 1961. Four out of five Seattle University undergraduate students serve the community through volunteer activities, internships and professional development. In all, students contribute 200,000 hours of volunteer service annually, with an economic value of nearly $4.3 million. Seattle University's students, faculty and staff volunteer at more than three times the national average. A major focus of service is the Seattle University Youth Initiative, a pipeline of support for the success of young people starting in pre-kindergarten and continuing through college.Desc

Schedule D, Part III, Line 1The University holds various collections that are made up of artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational, research, scientific, and curatorial purposes. Each item is cataloged, preserved, and maintained to ensure their original condition is maintained. Collections, which have been acquired through purchases and contributions to the University, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired, or as the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset class. No collection items were deaccessioned in the years ended June 30, 2014 or 2013.
Schedule D, Part III, Line 4The artifacts in the University's collections are used for instructional and research purposes.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4aIn prior years, the University disclosed its auxiliary activities as a separate program service accomplishment. In this return, those activities are included in the University's disclosures in line 4a.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2Trustee Scott Redman has a familial relationship with Trustee Rick Redman. Trustee Rolfe, Trustee Trainer, and Trustee Wright each has a business or financial interest in an entity that owns or operates a mixed use structure on property leased from Seattle University and that provides housing opportunities for students and faculty. Trustee Rolfe, Trustee Trainer, and Trustee Wright each has a business or financial interest in an entity that owns or operates a mixed use structure on property leased from Seattle University and that provides housing opportunities for students and faculty.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6Seattle University is a Washington nonprofit corporation governed by a Board of Trustees that is responsible for the overall management of the affairs of the University. As a nonprofit member corporation established under Washington state law, the University has a Board of Members. The University has seven members. Each member is required to be in good standing in the Society of Jesus. The seven members include the following: the Rector of the Seattle University Jesuit Community and six Jesuits from among those under contract at Seattle University. The President, Provost and any Vice President of Seattle University are ineligible to be a member. Members are elected by Jesuits currently under contract at Seattle University.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7aThe bylaws for Seattle University require at least seven of the thirty-five Trustees belonging to the Society of Jesus, one of whom is the President of the University ex officio. These Jesuit Trustees are chosen by the Members. Any Trustees appointed by the Members may be removed from the governing board by the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all the Members. Any vacancies of Trustees originally appointed by the Members should be subsequently filled with another individual appointed by the Members.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7bThe principal duty of the Members is to ensure furtherance of the work of Catholic higher education in accordance with the tradition sand ideals of the Society of Jesus. The power to alter, amend, or repeal the Articles of Incorporation or the Bylaws is reserved to the Members and must be exercised in accordance with the Bylaws. The Members may delegate this authority to the Board of Trustees in whole or in part. The Board of Trustees may not authorize the sale or lease of any corporate properties having a fair market value in excess of $300,000 without the written approval of a majority of the Members. Members, like Trustees, have a duty to conduct themselves in the best interests of the University consistent with the objectives and purposes of the University as stated in the Articles and Bylaws.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11bEach voting member of the Board of Trustees was provided with an electronic copy of Form 990 and supporting schedules prior to filing with the IRS. The Audit Committee of the Board met to review the form and schedules as well. The form and schedules were also reviewed by appropriate officers and management, including but not limited to the CFO/VP for Finance and Business Affairs, the Associate VP for Finance and Investments, the Executive Vice President, and University Counsel.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12cThe Conflict of Interest Policy for Trustees is contained in the Bylaws of the University. Trustees are informed of this policy during Trustee orientation and the annual meeting. On an annual basis, each Trustee is asked to furnish a written statement indicating whether he or she is involved in any matter that poses an actual or potential conflict of interest. Trustees are expected to update the disclosure throughout the year as may be appropriate. After a trustee's disclosure of a potential financial or other conflict of interest, the chair of the Board of Trustees, in consultation with the University Counsel, determines whether the situation constitutes a conflict of interest requiring action by the Board. If the chair of the Board believes Board action is appropriate, the interested person must leave the Board meeting where the financial or other interest is discussed and voted upon, unless requested to stay either to respond to questions or provide information to the Board on the matter under discussion. The remaining board members decide if a conflict of interest exists and the appropriate course of action. Officers, key employees, faculty, and staff are covered by the University conflict of interest policy. Individuals are informed of this policy at the time of hire. The policy is contained in the Human Resources Policy Manual and is available to faculty and staff on the University's website. Upon identification of a potential conflict of interest, the matter is reviewed and evaluated by University officials and a determination is made regarding an appropriate action. The University has also adopted the Policy for Financial Conflict of Interest Disclosure and Management for Investigators in Externally Sponsored Programs in compliance with US Department of Health and Human Services regulations (42 CFR Part 50, Subpart F) and the financial conflict of interest policies of the National Science Foundation. Finally, the Office of Finance and Business Affairs, through the Office of the Controller, reviews carefully all proposed business transactions, expenditures, and requests for reimbursements to determine compliance with University policies, including those relating to conflict of interest.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15The University's process for determining compensation for the president, officers, and key employees includes the following elements: (1) an authorized committee of the Board of Trustees composed entirely of individuals who are unrelated to, and not subject to, the control of disqualified persons involved in the compensation arrangement; (2) reliance on appropriate comparability data, including compensation levels paid by similarly situated organizations for functionally comparable positions; the location of the University, including the availability of similar specialties in the geographic area; independent compensation surveys by nationally-recognized independent firms; and written offers from similar institutions competing for the services of the disqualified person; and (3) documentation by the authorized body that adequately documents the basis for determination concurrent with making decisions regarding the compensation arrangement. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees serves as the compensation committee and follows this process annually. The compensation arrangement for the President, Provost, Executive Vice President, CFO, and other members of the Cabinet was most recently reviewed on April 23, 2015. Within the institution, appropriate comparability data is also obtained and reviewed for all other officers, key employees, and any other highly-compensated employees.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19While applicable federal tax laws do not mandate that the University's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements be made available for public inspection, the University makes each of the foregoing available on its website, www.seattleu.edu, or upon request.
Form 990, Part VII, Section A, Line 1dStephen V. Sundborg, SJ, Peter B. Ely, SJ, Thomas M. Lucas, SJ, Eric Watson, SJ, and Patrick M. Kelly, SJ, are members of the Society of Jesus who are employed by Seattle University. Each has assigned his gross salary and the dollar equivalent of his employee benefits to the Jesuit Community at Seattle University in accordance with Article VI of the Bylaws of the University
