Mission DescriptionThe mission of the New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy, is to prepare gifted graduates of distinguished music programs for leadership roles in orchestras and ensembles around the world. Organization Overview: The New World Symphony (NWS) offers a three-year postgraduate fellowship program focusing on musical technique, performance, audience development, and community engagement. NWS seeks to expand Fellows' musical and professional horizons beyond their traditional conservatory training. Over a 35-week season, visiting faculty offer master classes, coaching, private lessons, and advanced seminars in audition training, performance psychology, communications, and community engagement. In addition, NWS Fellows perform weekly concerts, playing a diverse repertoire in an array of performance formats. NWS offers more than 80 classical music presentations each season, over a third of which are free. Organization Activities: As a laboratory for musical expression, NWS is shaping tMissionDescription

DescriptionArtistic Programming: A unique laboratory for musical expression, NWS is shaping the future of classical music performance and presentation. NWS challenges the traditional concert scenario, creating new audiences by breaking down barriers to classical music and generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented, and experienced. Since the opening of New World Center, NWS has become an international cultural hub where ideas about music, architecture, technology, and art intersect. Founded as an instrumental fellowship program by Ted Arison and Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, NWS' early years were spent developing a program that would prepare young musicians for professional orchestral careers. In the 25 years since its creation, NWS has achieved great success as a training academy and has evolved into a musical laboratory that is helping to shape the future of classical music presentation. NWS is now recognized as a leader in the industry, with work that has been the subject of consistent critical acclaim as well as national and international press attention. Each season, NWS engages an average of 150 artists and professionals in the field for residencies as visiting faculty to mentor, coach, and/or perform with its 86 Fellows, providing world-class artistic and educational programming to a yearly audience that now reaches nearly 80,000 Miami-Dade County residents and tourists. Visiting faculty includes some of the world's leading conductors, composers, and soloists, as well as professionals representing a wide range of music-related disciplines who work with Fellows in areas such as musical technique, community engagement, performance psychology, musician health, and arts administration. NWS, at the forefront in the use of technology in the arts, was the first arts organization to use the capacities of advanced videoconferencing for distance learning via the Internet2 network. This technology enables NWS Fellows to receive masterclasses and coaching from artists around the world, as well as give lessons to students within and beyond Miami-Dade County. Since its inaugural concert on February 4, 1988, the New World Symphony has been heard in such prestigious venues as New York's Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, London's Barbican Centre, Paris' Bastille Opera and Argentina's Teatro Colon. NWS has made seven recordings to date. Most recently, as part of its Great Performances series, PBS aired The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater on March 29, 2012. This special performance was recorded in April 2011 at the New World Center and features Michael Tilson Thomas conducting NWS Fellows. Honoring the legacy of traditional repertoire while leading the way for innovation in concert presentation and audience development, NWS continues to forge an adventurous path, further establishing its reputation as a unique institution. NWS envisions a strong and secure future for classical music and will redefine, reaffirm, express, and share its traditions with as many people as possible. New World Center, opened in January 2011 to worldwide acclaim, was built based upon the needs of NWS programming and invites and encourages NWS' innovative use of technology for advanced arts education, audience development, and community outreach and engagement. Through its design, the facility offers an unparalleled array of opportunities for musical experimentation, supporting the development and presentation of both traditional and alternate concert formats, expanding opportunities for artists to create and perform as well as to broaden and diversify audiences. Since the opening of New World Center, representatives from 109 arts organizations in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia have visited New World Center to consider their own futures based on NWS' accomplishments.Description

DescriptionOrchestral Training: The New World Symphony believes that orchestral musicians should be community ambassadors for classical music-as advocates, educators, mentors, and leaders. Through its community engagement programs, Fellows mentored local K-12 student musicians, offered free music lessons, and coached school bands and orchestras. These activities helped them to connect musically with diverse audiences and sharpened their presentation, speaking, and teaching skills. Community engagement training also included professional development seminars on subjects such as leadership, entrepreneurial skills, and career management; and theoretical and practical training sessions led by specialists from organizations such as the Carnegie Hall Academy and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By providing Fellows with both world class musicianship training and community engagement coaching, NWS ensures that the Fellows are capable of successfully sharing the traditions of classical music with as many people as possible. Community Engagement activities include: - NWS in the Schools and Community: Fellows visit area high schools to make 45-minute interactive and thematic musical presentations aimed at helping students discover and become excited about classical music. NWS Fellows also play in various other community venues, including hospitals and hospices. - MusicLab: Launched in 2009, MusicLab is a 26-week program operating in four Miami-Dade County public schools. Its goal is to offer instrumental training to music students, both in- person and via distance learning; and to build and enhance Fellows' teaching skills. - Rehearsal Observations: During these visits, students witness a rehearsal with internationally renowned conductors and soloists. Prior to the rehearsal, students meet NWS Fellows to learn about both the musical pieces and the instruments. - Kids in the Concert Hall Series: These educational daytime concerts are designed to introduce several thousand students to the concert-going experience as well as to major works and composers of orchestral music. The winter concerts are captured and post-produced for a spring webcast that reaches thousands of additional students in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. - Side-by-Side Concert: Advanced young instrumentalists (grades 7 through 12) have the opportunity to perform alongside NWS Fellows in the Side-by-Side concert. Students develop a musical working relationship with the Fellows as they both prepared and performed orchestral works of the highest caliber. The auditions are open to advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students. Community engagement programming for the general public includes NWS' free signature series: - Musical Xchanges, presentations whose format enables NWS Fellows to engage the audience in a lively yet informal discussion of their personal, historic, and/or creative interpretation of repertoire of their choice; - Musicians' Forums, recitals that NWS Fellows coordinate on their own, taking responsibility for the content, marketing, and implementation of each presentation. Based on inspiration and enthusiasm, these events allow audiences to better know the musicians, their passion, and their talent; - Inside the Music, educational lectures let NWS Fellows offer an intimate glimpse into their craft with these mini-seminars on topics ranging from music appreciation to the historic contexts of composers and more; and - The Solo Spotlight Series, a new presentation series which allow NWS Fellows to take the spotlight in intimate presentations of recital repertoire in the SunTrust Pavilion within New World Center. NWS believes that the orchestra musician of the 21st century needs not only extraordinary performance training, but also the skills to contribute to society at large as an advocate, educator, mentor, and leader. NWS' Community Engagement program offers the Fellows the experience of involvement within Miami-Dade County while helping them become effective and enthusiastic advocates for classical music in the communities in which they secure professional positions.Description

DescriptionAudience Development and Community Engagement: Confronted with an economic downturn, an aging audience, and more than a generation of potential audiences with limited exposure to classical music, orchestras nationwide have tested alternative ways to attract new audiences. This is essential for the artistic and fiscal health of the orchestral ecosystem. Though some experiments appear promising, there has been a lack of study to determine how and why they succeed or fail, or how their success might be replicated elsewhere. With its status as a laboratory for the creation and exploration of ways to secure the future of classical music, NWS has linked four alternate formats-Encounter Concerts, Mini-Concerts, PULSE, and Journey Concerts-to audience research. These experiments are measured by audience growth and response. NWS Fellows' exposure to these formats will reverberate throughout their careers as they build on their experience here, using a mindset that values curiosity, experimentation, and rigorous evaluation. Major findings from the past three seasons include the following: - NWS has learned that it is more important to understand and value audiences' preferences for specific formats rather than trying to move them into traditional forms. - Nurturing audiences' aesthetic development positively impacts future attendance. (Alternate formats attract inexperienced concertgoers; their experience helps them gain a greater appreciation for classical music performances.) - 30.9% of new-to-database buyers went on to purchase a ticket to a subsequent NWS program. - New-to-database buyers tend to prefer their initial format choice over others when they return for a second experience. - Mini-Concert and PULSE audiences are younger and more diverse than audiences for traditional concerts. - First-time attendees are significantly younger and more diverse than audiences for traditional concerts. - Overall attendee satisfaction with alternate formats has increased from 2010 to 2013. NWS serves as the data collection and evaluation hub for five partner orchestras-Memphis Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony, and Kansas City Symphony. Each organization's respective experiments, and the analysis of the results (presented at the 2013 League of American Orchestras conference), will help different institutions adapt alternate formats to their own communities. During the League of American Orchestra's 2013 conference, League President and CEO Jesse Rosen noted, "The New World Symphony is one of our beacons for taking innovation to the next level. They have not only been testing new concert formats, but they have been adjusting as they go-getting audience input, evaluating the results, and collaborating with the orchestras of San Diego, Charlotte, Memphis, Detroit, and Kansas City to extend the tests outward." We consider this a major step forward in promoting these ideas to the orchestral world at large.Description

ENDOWMENT FUNDSSCHEDULE D, PART V, LINE 4DURING 1991, NWS ESTABLISHED THE NEW WORLD SYMPHONY ENDOWMENT FUND. THE PURPOSE OF THE ENDOWMENT FUND IS TO CREATE A CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT WILL ENABLE INDIVIDUALS, CORPORATIONS, AND FOUNDATIONS TO MAKE GIFTS TO NWS, TO PROVIDE FOR THE PERMANENT FINANCING OF THE PROGRAMS OF NWS, AND TO ENSURE THE PERMANENT EXISTENCE OF NWS.
ARTWORK COLLECTIONSCHEDULE D, PART III, LINE 4New World Symphony believes the classical music experience begins when one crosses our NEW CAMPUS' threshold as a patron, musician or curious observer. Our NEW CAMPUS and its contents ARE the beginning of the experience as well as the contents inside. The art piece that has been so generously donated to us aids in the beginning of this experience.

UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONSCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require management to evaluate tax positions taken and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken and has concluded that as of June 30, 2013, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements. If the Organization were to incur an income tax liability in the future, interest would be reported as interest expense and penalties would be reported as income taxes. The Organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. Management believes the Organization is no longer subject to income tax examinations for years prior to 2010.
