| Description | Each year, the Music Academy of the West accepts 138 exceptional young musicians for its Summer School and Festival. Selected from among more than 1,680 applicants worldwide, Academy Fellows participate in one of five programs: Instrumental (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion), Solo Piano, Collaborative Piano, Vocal Piano, and Voice. The Academy's acclaimed Voice Program is directed by the legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. Over the course of eight weeks, Academy Fellows train and perform under the direction of accomplished faculty and guest artists. The Music Academy is a full-scholarship institution, selecting Fellows exclusively on the basis of their talent and professional promise. Every Academy Fellow receives full tuition, room, and board - something offered by only a handful of summer music festivals worldwide. As part of its performance-based training program, the Academy presents a summer festival featuring performances by Fellows, faculty, and celebrated guest artists. This annual festival of some 200 events, half of which are presented free of charge, exemplifies the Academy's commitment to enriching the cultural landscape of Santa Barbara while providing our Fellows with invaluable on-stage opportunities. | Description |

| Part X | Part X : FIN48 Footnote | The Academy is exempt from income taxes under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3), however income tax is imposed on income from a business enterprise of a non profit organization that is not related to its tax-exempt status. There is no tax for the year ended December 31, 2012. As a California nonprofit school, the Academy is exempt from state income taxes. Contributions to the Academy are deductible by the donors as provided by the Internal Revenue Code.In June 2006, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued ASC 740-10 (formerly known as FASB Interpretation No. 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes), which prescribed a comprehensive model for how an organization should measure, recognize, present, and disclose in its financial statements uncertain tax positions that an organization has taken or expects to take on a tax return. The Academy has adopted ASC 740-10. There was no impact to the Academy's financial statements as a result of the implementation of ASC 740-10. |
