DescriptionWILDLIFE CRIME AND CONSUMER AWARENESS IFAW provides training and equipment to rangers and law enforcement officials to combat poaching and trafficking in elephants, tigers, rhinos and other animals. Poaching for ivory represents one of the greatest threats to some elephant populations, notably in West and Central Africa. IFAW has trained more than 1,600 officers on how to combat illegal wildlife trafficking in smuggling hotspots throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Oceania, Central Asia, the Middle East and South Asia. IFAW's Prevention of Wildlife Trafficking Training workshops have resulted in several wildlife seizures by local and regional authorities. * IFAW maintained a "Think Twice" campaign information booth in Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam from July to November to educate travelers about the cruelty to animals that comes from the purchase of wildlife products. Two staffers distributed 20,000 educational brochures written in 7 languages. More than 14,000 people signed a petition urging the European Union to enforce the ban on the illegal ivory trade. * A family of Eastern hoolock gibbons was successfully translocated from Dello village, Arunachal Pradesh in India, to the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary as part of a project to help save the endangered species. * IFAW sponsored and conducted a training program held at Botswana Police College for wildlife law enforcement officers from 10 countries. INTERPOL conducted the workshop with assistance from Environment Canada and a grant from IFAW. The training focused on fundamental law enforcement skills that were essential in executing a multinational INTERPOL-IFAW operation to combat elephant and rhino trafficking across Africa in early 2012. * IFAW and the Djibouti government trained 60 government officials drawn from wildlife law enforcement, police, marine, veterinary and customs at a workshop on how to prevent wildlife trafficking. Participants came from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya. * IFAW's office in Dubai, in cooperation with the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and Nature, hosted a 5-day workshop on the prevention of wildlife trafficking. Forty-five government officials and wildlife enforcement officers participated in the program. The workshop's aims were to strengthen the capacity of Iraqi officials to fight wildlife trafficking and encourage Iraq to join the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. * More than 30 officials from wildlife law enforcement, customs, park management and other agencies in Tanzania attended a training workshop to enhance their ability to protect animals from wildlife crimes. Tanzania Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and IFAW organized the workshop, which was designed to train officials in the prevention of illicit wildlife trade and develop skills to identify and properly handle wildlife and derivative products such as elephant ivory. * IFAW's office in Dubai and Dubai Customs signed a memorandum of understanding. The agreement enhances cooperation between IFAW and Dubai Customs in the prevention of wildlife trafficking and raises capacity building, information exchange and expertise sharing related to animal welfare and conservation. Following the signing of the MoU, IFAW conducted a Prevention of Wildlife Trafficking Training workshop in cooperation with Dubai Customs and the Ministry of Environment and Water for 33 customs officers. * IFAW and the CITES and customs authorities in China launched a public campaign to reduce demand for illegal wildlife products. "Think Twice! Say No to Illegal Wildlife Trade" banners were posted at 1,500 international airports, railway stations, post offices and custom clearance offices. * Intelligence from IFAW guided China's enforcement authorities in one of the largest crackdowns on illegal wildlife trade in the country's history. The operation in the spring of 2012 resulted in the confiscation of more than 130,000 wild animals and animal products, the shutdown of 7,155 shops and 628 online stores and the removal of online information.Description

DescriptionELEPHANTS In addition to rescuing individual elephants, IFAW works to protect entire populations of animals from suffering because of habitat destruction and fragmentation, poaching and illegal wildlife trade, human-animal conflict and other threats from human activities. In addition to our policy work, IFAW works with people on the front lines of animal protection efforts-rangers, custom and wildlife crime officers and communities who live near wild animals-to develop long-term solutions that work for animals and people. * A team from IFAW's office in France confirmed that poachers had been slaughtering hundreds of elephants over a period of several weeks in BoubaNjida Park in Cameroon. The annihilation was met with indifference by the Cameroonian government until IFAW's team alerted the worldwide media, compelling the government to send in the military to stop the poaching. * Nine elephants, six males and three females, in Kenya's Tsavo East and West National Parks were fitted with satellite collars. The collars will provide a picture of the migratory corridors the elephants use and buffer zones within a 43,000 square kilometres ecosystem. Using the data gathered by the collars, the Kenya Wildlife Service will be able to develop measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict as well as mount anti-poaching security operations. * IFAW commissioned artist Damon Martin to paint a mural to raise awareness about the need to protect elephants against the illegal ivory trade. The mural depicts an elephant family in Martin's signature "Razzle Dazzle" style and spans the outside walls of four buildings located in the heart of LA's Arts District. * At IFAW's project, "Living in Harmony with Elephants," in Yunnan, China, 6 safety patrollers worked nonstop in 25 villages to record the roaming patterns of wild Asian elephants, helping to mitigate human-elephant conflict. 2012 was the third consecutive year in which there were no conflicts between people and elephants.Description

DescriptionANIMAL RESCUE IFAW rescues and protects animals in crisis around the world. This year, our work spanned the rescuing of stranded dolphins on beaches of Cape Cod to feeding hungry zoo animals in war-torn Libya. * IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research Team responded to an unprecedented number of common dolphin strandings on Cape Cod in just four weeks. MMRR investigated 179 cases of stranded dolphins. Of the 71 dolphins found alive, 53 were successfully released back into the ocean. * IFAW deployed five emergency animal shelter responders to North Dakota after the Souris River reached flood levels not seen in more than a century. The team helped care for 500 animals--mostly dogs and cats--at the Souris Valley Animal Shelter. * IFAW provided funding to airlift six endangered Grauer's gorillas from a temporary facility in Kinigi, Rwanda to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center near Kasugho, Democratic Republic of Congo. The gorillas will remain at the center until they are ready to be released back into the wild. The move was organized by Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. * After heavy monsoon rains battered South Asia for weeks, causing widespread flooding and displacing millions of people and animals, IFAW initiated relief operations in southern Pakistan and eastern India, two areas that bore the brunt of the incessant rains. IFAW worked to get food for animals into the hardest-hit areas as quickly as possible. IFAW partnered with Ravi Foundation to provide feed for 4,559 farm animals. * IFAW helped move four wolf-dogs from a bankrupt sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas to a new home at the Lockwood Animal Rescue Center in Frazier Park, Calif. * In FY12, IFAW's Beijing Raptor Rescue Center provided medical care for 242 injured birds of prey, mostly victims of commercial trade and habitat loss. Of these, 96 were successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild. * IFAW and Wildlife Trust of India assisted India's Forest Department in an operation to rescue and relocate an isolated group of endangered hoolock gibbons, one of the last species of apes in India. The first two individuals were successfully translocated and released into a safe habitat in Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary. Eighteen families have been targeted for the ambitious translocation effort. * IFAW sent an assessment team to Bangkok in the wake of Thailand's worst floods ever and awarded a grant to a shelter that provided food, water and veterinary care to more than 2,800 dogs and cats. * IFAW rescued 29 wolves and wolf-dogs from a roadside exhibit near Anchorage, Alaska and transported them to Lockwood Animal Rescue Center in Frazier Park, Calif. IFAW also provided funds to build 28 large enclosures at Lockwood. * A cougar and a tiger living in Ashland, Ohio were moved 800 miles to Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone, Minn. IFAW helped transport Nikita, a 7-year-old white tiger, and Tasha, a 10-year-old cougar from small backyard cages and funded spacious new enclosures at the sanctuary. * IFAW sent badly needed funds to the Tripoli Zoo to feed and care for animals in the midst of armed conflict in Libya. * Maju and Raja, two orphaned rhinos, were released back into the wild in northeast India after several years under the care of IFAW's Wildlife Rescue Center in India. The two rhinos are a part of IFAW's multi-year project to repopulate Manas National Park, which lost its entire rhino population to poachers in the late 1970s and early 1980s.Description

19088811001140WHALES Ending commercial whaling is a longstanding IFAW campaign priority. Last year, IFAW's whale projects addressed a number of threats to whales: * IFAW, in collaboration with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and other partners, developed and launched Whale Alert, an iPad/iPhone app for mariners to help avoid deadly collisions with endangered North Atlantic right whales. This app, available free to mariners and the public, provides a direct link between the whales and vessels, using real-time sightings, GPS and data captured by acoustic buoys in Stellwagen Bank. * IFAW's research vessel, Song of the Whale, joined IFAW's long-time partner, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, as a member of an international team studying humpback and fin whales off the coast of Massachusetts. The Song of the Whale visited the Azores in April and May while en route from the UK to the U.S. The stop was made so the research team could build on recent research on the vocalizations of baleen and beaked whales as part of an on-going project to develop acoustic detection systems. Song of the Whale also spent 20 days surveying the habits of harbour porpoises in the North Sea. * IFAW launched in June a major tourist campaign--"Meet Us Don't Eat Us"--in Iceland in coordination with whale watch operators and UK, US, German and EU embassies. Despite the cruelty involved in whaling and the small appetite for whale meat among Icelanders, an estimated 40% of tourists are persuaded to eat whale meat under the mistaken belief that it is a traditional Icelandic dish. The campaign urged tourists to enjoy whale watching trips, rather than dining on whale meat.
17471813597930COMPANION ANIMALS IFAW's companion animal projects treated or sheltered animals in Canada, Russia, China, United States, Indonesia, South Africa, Germany, France, Mexico and several other countries. We helped individual animals and worked with communities to help ensure happy, healthy, and safe populations of animals now and in the future. Some of our achievements for dogs and cats last year included: * A part-time vet hired by IFAW treated and vaccinated 696 animals at Tiertafel Deutschland in Berlin. Tiertafel is a charitable association in 23 cities and towns that helps people with limited financial means to feed and care for their pets. IFAW also funded the purchase of a van that is used to distribute supplies to Tiertafel's locations. * IFAW developed culturally relevant education modules for Navajo Nation children from kindergarten to fifth grade about how to care for dogs, how to interpret dog behavior and other dog-related subjects. IFAW's Community Outreach Volunteer Program trained volunteers to teach these modules during the 2011-2012 school year. * In collaboration with the dog management authorities in Beijing, IFAW launched an ad campaign promoting adequate animal guardianship. PSAs blanketed the city, residential communities, bus stops and subway lines, reaching tens of millions of people. * In an all-too-common scenario, more than 100 small breeds such as Chihuahuas, West Highland terriers, Boston terriers and dachshunds were discovered living in pitiable conditions at a puppy mill in Hot Springs, Ark. Many of the dogs suffered from severe skin diseases, flea infestation, infections and other signs of neglect. IFAW helped treat and find good homes for the dogs. * Hundreds of dogs that narrowly escaped being put on Chinese restaurant menus received emergency vaccinations provided by IFAW. IFAW also issued an open letter to Chinese authorities calling for enforcement of health and quarantine regulations to prevent the illegal, unsafe and inhumane inter-province transport of dogs for human consumption. * Lobbying by IFAW's Community-Led Animal Welfare dog and cat project in Johannesburg led to one of the toughest judgments ever handed down for animal abuse in South Africa. A 34-year old woman was sentenced to 12 months in prison (suspended for 5 years) and 12 months house arrest after pleading guilty to animal cruelty for leaving her severely mutilated dog to suffer in her driveway for days. * IFAW deployed two teams to Florida at the request of the ASPCA to aid in the rescue of 692 cats from heartbreaking conditions at a failed cat sanctuary in Madison County. Later, the teams would assist in adoption days for the cats. * Government officials, conservationists, animal rescuers and celebrities commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the Beijing Raptor Rescue Center-China's only raptor rescue and rehabilitation facility. BRRC has treated more than 3,500 birds of prey and returned more than 57 percent of them to the sky. Established by IFAW, the center is located at Beijing Normal University. * After a bankrupt sanctuary in Ohio was forced to close its doors, 32 animals including 11 tigers, 7 lions, 5 cougars, 8 wolf-dogs and a black bear needed to be relocated to new homes. IFAW provided an emergency grant that went towards covering the medical costs for all the animals and helping with transport costs to new sanctuaries across the U.S. * From July 2011 to June 2012, IFAW China provided vaccinations and medical care for 1,754 dogs and 1,479 cats saved from dog culls and the meat trade. Eighty dogs and 379 cats subsequently found forever homes.
1491142475880SEALS We're making great strides in the battle to save seals from the annual bloodbath known as the Canadian seal hunt. The seal take in FY12 was 68,000 seals, down from more than 300,000 in peak years. The European Union and Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan have banned the sales of seal pelts and products made from seals, greatly affecting the industry's sustainability. The fight is not over, however. The Canadian government still sanctions an annual seal hunt although it's of little economic value to sealers and processors. In Namibia, 80,000 seal pups and 6,000 bull seals are clubbed and shot to death during the annual seal hunt. * IFAW helped defend the EU trade ban on seal products, which is being challenged by Canada and Norway at the World Trade organization. IFAW contributed to a joint amicus brief with historical background information, scientific studies and articles, and years of footage documenting the continued infractions during the Canadian commercial seal hunt and the Norwegian seal hunt. * IFAW suggested to the European Parliament's Intergroup for the Conservation and Welfare of Animals to write a letter of support to Canada's Senator Mac Harb. The letter signed by Members of the European Parliament congratulated Senator Mac Harb for introducing Bill S-120, which would end the commercial seal hunt, in the Canadian Parliament. * IFAW and Duke University co-authored a study on the effects of climate change on harp seals that was published in the peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE. The Duke/IFAW study is the first to reveal that seasonal sea ice cover in harp seal breeding regions in the North Atlantic has declined by as much as 6% per decade since 1969. Warming in the region over the last 32 years has significantly reduced the winter sea ice harp seals require to give birth and nurse their pups, resulting in higher death rates for seal pups in recent years.
1417493797590REGIONAL PRIORITIES TIGERS Because of wildlife trafficking, tigers have experienced a 97 percent decline in population since 1900, a time when 100,000 of these mighty creatures roamed the earth. As few as 3,000 wild tigers survive today. * In the Russian Far East, where poaching of tigers and their prey is a serious threat to the last 300 to 400 wild Amur (also known as Siberian) tigers, IFAW supports the most effective anti-poaching ranger team in the region. This innovative team patrols along the border with China on foot, by jeep, boat and motorized glider. The Khasan rangers conduct 12-18 patrols each month, at all hours of the day and night, resulting in more than 100 arrests, violation orders, criminal court cases and seizures of illegal equipment and firearms each year. * IFAW signed an agreement with Bhutan's Department of Forest and Park Services and Ministry of Agriculture and Forests as part of IFAW's global agenda to conserve tigers and safeguard their dwindling habitats. The agreement includes capacity-building for frontline forest staff to improve anti-poaching operations and training for police, army, customs and other agencies. LANDMARK LEGISLATION It's important for IFAW and compassionate people to help individual animals that are suffering from cruelty, neglect, disasters and human-animal conflict. It's also important to consider the cultures and policies that allow animals to suffer. IFAW works at the international, national and community level to make meaningful improvements in the ways in which people impact animals. We are committed to finding solutions that protect the well-being of animals and people. Despite a ban on the sale of seal products in the European Union, Canada persists in trying to have the ban lifted by appealing to the World Trade Organization. So far, they have not had success. IFAW was one of the leading organizations in the campaign for the passage of the Hunting Act, which was introduced to stop the practice of using dogs to hunt foxes, deer, hares and mink for "sport," which the majority of the British public finds completely unacceptable. Last year, the coalition government pledged to hold a free vote to give members of Parliament the chance to repeal the Hunting Act. IFAW presented the UK government with 10,000 signatures in support of the Hunting Act, to demonstrate ongoing public support for this initiative and dissuade elected officials from repealing the ban on hunting with dogs. IFAW continues to work closely with police forces on enforcement of the ban and employs a team of hunt monitors to gather evidence of suspected illegal hunting. Other victories IFAW made in improving the way animals are protected in society and policy include: * In Quintana Roo, Mexico, the passage of the Animal Welfare and Protection Law of the State of Quintana Roo means there is now a legal avenue to fight animal cruelty. IFAW worked with local authorities, the College of Veterinarians of Quintana Roo and animal welfare groups to improve existing legislation and develop regulations for better compliance. Previously, there was no way for individuals to report cases of cruelty and abuse. * Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, (D-CA) introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would prohibit privately owning and breeding of big cats. The "Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act" would ensure lions, tigers and other dangerous big cats do not threaten public safety or live in deplorable conditions where they could be subjected to poor treatment and cruelty. IFAW assisted in drafting the act. * IFAW was a member of a large coalition of non-governmental organizations that successfully convinced the Australian government to create one of the world's largest networks of marine reserves, protecting an area covering more than 2.3 million square kilometers (890,000 square miles). ANIMAL ACTION EDUCATION PROGRAM For 20 years, IFAW has sponsored an annual Animal Action Education (AAE) program, designed to teach young people how to take positive action on behalf of animals and the environment. This year, more than 5 million children in 16 countries participated in the program, entitled, Elephants, Never Forget. * More than 283,600 young people and adults worldwide called for governments to step up efforts to end illegal ivory trade following the launch of IFAW's Elephant March campaign and education program led by Leonardo DiCaprio during Animal Action Week (3-9 October, 2011). * FY12 was the first time the EU office participated in the Animal Action Education's "Elephant's, Never Forget" program. We sent information packets to 700-plus contacts in about 300 European and International schools in 29 European countries. To promote AAE materials, we made an agreement with European SchoolNet, a network of 30 Ministries of Education in Europe and beyond, supported by the European Commission. We also collaborated with Jane Goodall Institute, Brussels, Enseignement.be (Belgian Ministry of Education) and Norwegian University of Life Sciences. * From October 2011 to January 2012, 180,000 Chinese students from more than 200 schools in 16 provinces and cities participated in IFAW's Animal Action Education week. Twenty-five thousand students signed a "Say 'No' to ivory" petition rejecting the ivory trade.
