DescriptionCHILD CARE - WE ARE ONE OF THE LARGEST PROVIDERS OF AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE IN THE GREATER NASHUA COMMUNITY. A COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT CONDUCTED BY THE UNITED WAY OF GREATER NASHUA SHOWED THAT AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE WAS VIEWED BY 74% OF HUMAN SERVICE PROVIDERS AS A "MAJOR PROBLEM." THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF ALL YMCA CHILD CARE PROGRAMS IS TO FOSTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, NOT ONLY IN CHILDREN BUT ALSO IN THEIR PARENTS AND FAMILIES. APPROXIMATELY 139 CHILDREN WERE ENROLLED IN THE MERRIMACK YMCA'S FULLTIME LICENSED CHILD CARE, FULL AND PART-TIME PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS DURING THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR. THESE PROGRAMS EXPOSE CHILDREN TO A VARIETY OF ASSET-BUILDING PROGRAMS AS WELL AS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS. AN ADDITIONAL 237 CHILDREN WERE ENROLLED IN SCHOOL'S OUT AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS AT THE MERRIMACK AND NASHUA YMCAS DURING THE 11/12 SCHOOL YEAR. DAILY ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOL'S OUT PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE ARTS AND CRAFTS, GROUP GAMES, SPORTS, MUSIC, SWIMMING, FREE PLAY, AND HOMEWORK TIME. THESE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS HELP KIDS DEVELOP MORAL AND ETHICAL BEHAVIOR, SELF-ESTEEM, AND LEADERSHIP. PARENTS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN POLICY AND PROGRAM DECISIONS. TRANSPORTATION IS PROVIDED FROM ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE AREA EACH DAY TO BOTH LOCATIONS. THE MERRIMACK YMCA ALSO PROVIDES A BEFORE SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDES BUSSING TO MERRIMACK SCHOOLS. ON DAYS OFF FROM SCHOOL (VACATION, TEACHER SERVICE, SNOW DAYS, ETC) WHEN PARENTS STILL HAVE TO WORK, THE SCHOOL'S OUT PROGRAM RUNS ALL DAY FOR NO ADDITIONAL COST WITH THE EXCEPTIONS OF 5 MAJOR HOLIDAYS WHEN THE YMCA IS CLOSED. IN MANY INSTANCES YMCA CHILD CARE ALLOWS PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN IN OUR PROGRAMS TO REMAIN GAINFULLY EMPLOYED, KNOWING THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE THRIVING IN A SAFE, SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT. FOR PARENTS WHO CANNOT AFFORD THE FULL FEE, CARE IS PROVIDED ON A BELOW-COST BASIS THROUGH THE Y CARES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM.Description
