Program Service StatementForm 990, Part III, Line 4a, Program Service Accomplishments(continuation): Below, we list a sample of accomplishments and victories for the environment in 2012. Climate & Energy - Greenpeace is campaigning for a significant reduction in carbon pollution and a rapid transition to a clean energy economy. Coal-fired power plants are the single largest current source of global warming pollution in the U.S., and the expansion of coal exports threatens to become the single largest new source of U.S. carbon pollution. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, Greenpeace is working with local communities to close coal plants and block investments in new dirty energy projects, and leading corporate campaigns to transform large utilities such as Duke Energy into clean energy champions. In 2012, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for the climate: After a multi-year battle, Midwest Generation's closed its Chicago Fisk and Crawford coal-fired power plants. GenOn closed its Potomac River plant and announced it will shut seven other coal plants in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio by May 2015. Other plant closures announced include: Portland Generating Station (PA), Bridgeport (CT), and Salem Harbor (MA). Apple announced it would double its solar capacity and investment in local renewable energy to power its Maiden, NC data center, and that all of its data centers would be coal-free by the end of 2013. Microsoft also announced it would become carbon neutral by buying renewable energy credits. Twenty eight Northwest cities and counties passed resolutions opposing coal exports, striking a significant blow to coal supplier's efforts to secure support for rail and port infrastructure projects that are necessary to increase coal exports. Forests - Greenpeace is campaigning for zero deforestation in the world's ancient forests. Two-thirds of all plant and animal species found on land and millions of people rely on ancient forests for survival. These forests are also important for the climate since they store vast amounts of carbon in their trees and soil, which is released into the atmosphere when they are burned or cleared. Greenpeace is leading consumer campaigns to influence corporate buyers of forest products to stop doing business with companies that are destroying ancient forests and to implement sustainable forests-products policies and practices. In 2012, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for the forests: National Geographic, Xerox, Kmart, Mattel. Lego and other major buyers of Asia Pulp and Paper, Indonesia's largest paper company and forest destroyer, committed to sever their ties with the company until it ends its forest destruction. U.S. steel companies threatened to sever their ties with Brazilian suppliers of pig iron, an ingredient in steel making, until they ended their practice of using rainforest wood and slave labor. In August, all seven pig iron producers in the state of Maranhao (northern Brazil) signed a commitment to not use wood charcoal that comes from slave labor, forest destruction or invasions into indigenous lands. Oceans - Greenpeace is campaigning for a global network of marine reserves and an end to unsustainable fishing. Industrial fishing is destroying critical marine habitats and wreaking havoc on 90% of global fisheries. Global warming is also profoundly affecting ocean ecosystems. Greenpeace is using cutting edge scientific research to press for the creation of marine reserves, which are vital for restoring the health of the oceans, and leading markets campaigns to convince corporate seafood buyers to stop buying unsustainable seafood and to implement sustainable seafood policies and practices. In 2012, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for the oceans: The North Pacific Fishery Management Council agreed to consider protecting Bering Sea canyons following publication of a peer-reviewed scientific report in the Public Library of Science summarizing the findings from Greenpeace's historic 2007 Bering Sea Expedition. The report details the presence of corals and sponges in Zhemchug and Pribilof Canyons, including a new species of sponge, Aaptos kanuux, discovered by the Greenpeace team. Sponges and corals provide critical habitat for many marine species and commercially important fish. The sixth edition of the Greenpeace seafood scorecard, Carting Away the Oceans, documented significant progress among retailers toward improving their seafood policies and practices, including: Safeway's commitment to source its private label skipjack tuna from fisheries that do not use fish aggregating devices (FADs); Whole Foods commitment to stop selling unsustainable seafood and establish new sustainability standards for its canned tuna; and, Safeway, Harris Teeter and Wegmans commitments to not purchase any seafood from the Ross Sea and to call for the area to be protected as a marine reserve. Toxics - Greenpeace is campaigning for zero discharge of toxic chemicals in the global south and for high-risk chemical facilities in the U.S. to convert to safer processes. Across the U.S., 473 chemical facilities endanger the health of over 100 million people should accidents or terrorist attacks occur. Textile factories in the global south, which supply western markets such as the U.S., are responsible for dumping significant levels of hazardous chemicals into local waterways. Greenpeace is working with a diverse coalition to protect U.S. communities from chemical disasters, and demanding zero discharge commitments from U.S. apparel companies to reduce the dumping of hazardous chemicals in waterways of the global south. In 2012, Greenpeace succeeded in securing significant wins for health and the environment: EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson directed her staff to evaluate all options for addressing chemical security in the U.S., including through existing Clean Air Act authorities that can require safer chemical processes at high risk chemical plants. This action could result in the elimination of more than 175 of the most toxic gaseous poison chemicals used at major chemical facilities across the U.S. U.S.-based Levi Strauss & Company, the world's largest denim company, committed to zero discharge of toxic chemicals in its supply chain by 2020.
