DescriptionBROADWAY ENTERTAINMENT Presenting live Broadway theatre since 1951, the not-for-profit Starlight Theatre Association is Kansas City's oldest and largest performing arts organization. The Association operates, programs and maintains the largest stage in the United States, as well as the 16-acre Starlight Theatre complex. While assuming all annual operating costs for the complex, the Association also raises funds for capital improvements and a variety of programs, including Broadway musicals, concerts, community outreach and education. Since 2000, the Association has contributed more than $25 million of privately funded improvements to the Kansas City, Mo.-owned Starlight Theatre. In 2011, Starlight recorded more than $1 million of depreciation expenses related to the theatre facility, equipment and offices. In 2011, for the fifth consecutive year, Starlight Theatre was selected as the "Favorite Performing Arts Venue" in the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association's Visitors' Choice Awards program. Starlight also took the KCCVA's top honors for "Favorite Concert/Live Music Venue" for the second straight year and the new "Favorite Arts Performance" award for its presentation of Mamma Mia! Starlight received awards for "Best Theater" and "Best Performing Arts Venue" in Ingram's 2011 Best of Business Kansas City Awards, as well as the award for "Best Live Theater Venue" in the KC Magazine City's Best 2011 competition. The theatre seats approximately 8,000 and is located in Swope Park. In 2011, total attendance for Starlight Broadway shows and concerts was nearly 238,000. Starlight Theatre's annual summer Broadway series features national Broadway tours, co-productions with other regional theatres, and its own locally produced shows. The landmark outdoor theatre, one of only three of its kind remaining in the United States, draws theatre fans from throughout the metropolitan Kansas City area, as well as surrounding cities and states. In fact, nearly every summer Starlight welcomes visitors from all 50 states and several nations. The 2011 Broadway season brought six top-quality productions to the 12,000-square-foot Starlight Theatre stage - The King and I, 9 to 5: The Musical, Guys and Dolls, Cinderella, Mamma Mia! and Xanadu. Total attendance for the Broadway productions exceeded 154,000 in 2011. Those attending enjoyed many favorite Starlight amenities, including pre-show dining, a gift store, expanded concessions, picturesque fountains and lushly landscaped grounds. In support of its not-for-profit mission, Starlight Theatre since 1951 has offered a Community Ticket Program that provides a live theatre experience to individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford one due to economic, medical or other restrictive causes. The program makes available more than 11,000 free tickets to Starlight Broadway performances each season to not-for-profit organizations in the bi-state area. Special consideration is given to groups working to enhance the lives of underprivileged and at-risk youth, the medically dependent or disabled, and low-income senior citizens. During the past 60 years, the Starlight Community Ticket Program has provided tens of thousands of area citizens the opportunity to enjoy professional live theatre at no cost. During the 2011 Broadway season alone, 142 charitable organizations benefited as a total of 14,196 tickets were given to both new and returning not-for-profit groups. Starlight Theatre also makes available 200 free tickets each season to charitable and community organizations to use in fund-raising efforts. In addition, Starlight maintains a significant portion of its tickets at below-market prices to provide affordable access to area residents and visitors. In 2011, approximately 20,500 tickets for Starlight Broadway musicals were sold for $10 or less.Description

DescriptionCONCERT ENTERTAINMENT In addition to offering award-winning Broadway theatre, Starlight Theatre also is a favored performance venue for top concert artists. Starlight's climate-controlled stage, rehearsal spaces, dressing rooms and many amenities are considered state of the art in the outdoor concert industry. The Starlight venue's seating capacity for nearly 8,000 fans is another major plus in attracting today's leading performance artists. The 2011 concert series at Starlight featured 16 concert performances, covering the gamut of musical genres. The lineup included classic rock favorites Yes, STYX, Steely Dan, Journey and Foreigner, current chart-toppers including Arcade Fire, Maroon 5, Selena Gomez and Ke$ha, as well as comedians Martin Lawrence and Chelsea Handler. In total, nearly 84,000 music fans enjoyed a concert at Starlight in 2011.Description

DescriptionEDUCATION PROGRAMS The momentum for performing arts education continues to build at Starlight Theatre. The commitment to education is deeply held at Starlight as evidenced in the theatre's vision statement: Starlight Theatre is the premier entertainment treasure of the heartland, where performing arts share center stage with education. In keeping with its not-for-profit mission and in response to growing community interest, Starlight continues to expand its portfolio of education programs. As expenses significantly exceed revenues for its education offerings, many of which are offered at little or no cost to participants, Starlight funds this important initiative with operating funds and private donations. Educational programming in 2011 included: " College internships in multiple theatre production and administration roles, through the Bob Rohlf Internship Program and Endowment " Rising Star scholarships for high school seniors and Vincent Legacy scholarships for minority middle-school students " The Starlight STARS of Tomorrow year-round community performance troupe " The Blue Star Awards in 2011 celebrated its ninth year, with 46 Kansas City-area high schools participating in this annual theatre recognition program " Act Like An Animal summer camp, held in partnership with the Kansas City Zoo, offered two sessions for youth ages 5 to 10 " Musical theatre education classes were offered in multiple area locations in both spring and fall semesters " Starlight on Site's in-school theatre education curriculum continued with the KCMO School District " The new Just Imagine program introduced interactive theatrical performances to children in hospitals, domestic shelters and community facilities. In addition to the scholarship programs noted above. Starlight also makes available, on a demonstrated-need basis, scholarship funding for several of its programs, including classes and summer camps.Description
