DescriptionThe executive management, fundraising and administrative support functions provided by Martha and Mary Lutheran Services to its subsidiary corporations is critical to the success of the operation of their programs, to the customers of the Martha and Mary corporations and to the greater community. The provision of these functions allows the subsidiary corporations the freedom to focus their resources on the success of their individual missions while at the same time ensuring that these efforts are coordinated to maximize the impact on their customers and the community. As a consolidated company (all subsidiaries combined), Martha and Mary is currently one of the largest private employers in the Kitsap region with over 600 employees serving over 2,300 local citizens each year. In total, we offer a wide array of programs for children, families, and seniors. These programs are distinguished because of the size of our programs, because of the quality of our programs and because our programs are offered not just to those with financial means, but also those whose financial situation may have otherwise excluded them from utilizing services essential to their wellbeing. Effective executive management, fundraising and administrative support has helped our programs achieve the following: We are the largest childcare program in the country associated with long-term care. Bridging generations and enriching lives is part of our local brand. We have received nation acclaim for our unique intergenerational programs where we bring children and seniors together in a meaningful and at times inspiring way. We are one of the select few childcare providers in the State of Washington that have received support from the Career and Wage Ladder Program. We recognize the importance of work/life balance for our employees. We offer a 35% discount for on-site childcare programs to those employed with Martha and Mary. Within the Martha and Mary family of services, over $1.9 million of under-funded care has been provided to those we serve. This makes Martha and Mary continually stand out as a leader, not only in the region, but also in the state of Washington because of our commitment to ensuring low income seniors and children continue to have significant access to our quality programs. Our combined volunteer hours again exceeded 19,000 hours. Each volunteer providing their unique gifts to all we serve. We provide opportunities for educational assistance for entry-level workers to increase their skills and become recognized professionals like CNAs, LPNs, and physical therapy assistants. We have Rehab programs and other clinical offerings for seniors that have been recognized and deemed appropriate for preferred provider status from important healthcare agencies. We are the primary long-term care provider in this region participating in an exciting resident care model. This model is demonstrating best practices where it is possible to achieve clinical outcomes that are more effective, while providing reductions in costs. Our presence in the Home Care arena continues to grow. In 2011, we added Geriatric Care Management to our suite of services. Home Care has proven to be a natural extension of the service and support to seniors and their families in the communities that Martha and Mary serves. We received Best of Home Care status in 2011 for the high ratings associated with our customer satisfaction scores. It is our goal to have available those serves necessary to meet those needs.Martha and Mary has been providing affordable apartments for seniors for many years, and we have expanded our mission this year by entering into a Joint Venture agreement with another agency to develop and manage an affordable housing project for seniors. With this project we will again be expanding our ability to serve seniors at their point of need.We have the largest workforce training program in the region when it comes to citizen's training and testing to become Certified Nursing Assistants. The workforce demographics are staggering as more healthcare professionals will be required at a time when fewer are available. Our training program for front-line caregivers is currently a substantial part of the safety net in this region. We anticipate this program will continue to be critical in providing healthcare providers in the region with a reliable and sustainable workforce. Our ability to continue to hire quality employees will be a growing challenge. We have a proven track record of adapting to changing needs and being able to partner with other agencies in the community to ensure success for our customers, their families and the greater community. Efforts from many Lutheran Services stakeholders, including our executive management, fundraising, events planning and grant-writing staff have helped Martha and Mary achieve many significant milestones in our existing operations. However, the real fruit of our effort today is in preparing for future community needs. We are engaged in planning and community coordination efforts to define and offer programs that will be necessary to meet the needs of tomorrow.Description

Form 990, Part I, Line 6:Our volunteers are involved in all areas of our fundraising events, from planning and marketing, to event set up and check out. Our member congregations faithfully provide delegates at membership meetings. And last, but not least, the Trustees on our Board are integral to the success of the governance and oversight of Martha and Mary. In addition to the thousands of hours in our subsidiaries, there were approximately 1060 hours of volunteer service during the year. Volunteer hours were determined through a combination of tracking where possible and estimates.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2Sue Gitch and Dave Gitch are related and served on the board during 2011. The term of service for Sue Gitch was completed prior to the commencement of the term of service for Dave Gitch. Therefore, they did not serve contemporaneously on the board.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The organization has one class of members. These members consist of those member congregations that are affiliated with the corporation. Each member congregation can designate three individual persons to serve as delegates to the corporation. The delegates elect the corporation's Board of Trustees and approve substantial issues.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aEach member congregation can designate three individual persons to serve as delegates to the corporation. The delegates elect the corporation's Board of Trustees and approve substantial issues.

Approved substantial issues of the subsidiary Martha and Mary Health Services do not have any force or effect without the consent of HUD.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11Management reviews the Form 990 prior to the completed form being submitted to the Board. A copy of the completed 990 is provided to each Board member for their review and comments. In the case of a conflict, the Board member will recuse themselves. Board Trustees and all employees, including Employee Officers, are required to report any potential conflict of interests whenever they arise. Also, each year prior to the preparation of the Form 990, all Board of Trustee Members and Employee Officers who served during the year are provided with a questionnaire specifically tailored to the requirements of Form 990.
