| Description | SILENT SPRING INSTITUTE IS A NONPROFIT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO STUDYING THE LINKS BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENT AND WOMEN'S HEALTH, ESPECIALLY BREAST CANCER.SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1994 TO INVESTIGATE ELEVATED BREAST CANCER RATES ON CAPE COD, SILENT SPRING INSTITUTE HAS BECOME A NATIONAL LEADER IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH AND THE STUDY OF ENDOCRINE DISRUPTING COMPOUNDS THAT MAY AFFECT HORMONAL CANCERS (E.G., BREAST, PROSTATE, OVARIAN, TESTICULAR), FERTILITY, AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT. THE INSTITUTE HAS DEVELOPED NEW RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIES AND PUBLISHED 40 PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLES. AMONG OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE PAST 17 YEARS ARE A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT "FIRSTS," INCLUDING THE FIRST TO MEASURE ESTROGEN ACTIVITY IN GROUNDWATER (1998); TO MEASURE HOUSEHOLD EXPOSURE TO 30 HORMONE DISRUPTORS (2003); TO IDENTIFY THYROID-DISRUPTING FLAME RETARDANTS AS A HEALTH RISK IN U.S. HOMES (2004); TO COMPILE A COMPREHENSIVE DATABASE OF BREAST CARCINOGENS (2007); AND TO DEMONSTRATE THAT FOOD PACKAGING IS THE MAJOR SOURCE OF EXPOSURE TO HORMONE-DISRUPTING BPA AND PHTHALATES (2011). THESE SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES CONTRIBUTE TO BETTER CONSUMER CHOICES AND PUBLIC HEALTH POLICIES FOR SAFER CHEMICALS USE.OUR PATH-BREAKING RESEARCH PROGRAM FOCUSES ON IDENTIFYING AND REDUCING COMMON EXPOSURES TO HORMONE DISRUPTORS AND BREAST CARCINOGENS. OUR MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC STAFF COLLABORATES WITH RESEARCHERS AT HARVARD AND BROWN UNIVERSITIES AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY. CURRENT STUDIES INCLUDE:- HOUSEHOLD EXPOSURE STUDY. STRATEGIES TO REDUCE EXPOSURE TO HORMONE DISRUPTORS FROM CONSUMER PRODUCTS AND BUILDING MATERIALS USED IN HOMES- BREAST-SAFE CHEMICALS TESTING. DEVELOPING LABORATORY METHODS TO TEST CHEMICALS FOR EFFECTS ON BREAST DEVELOPMENT AND BREAST CANCER- PERSONAL EXPOSURE RIGHT-TO-KNOW STUDY. EVALUATING ETHICAL AND EFFECTIVE METHODS FOR REPORTING RESULTS TO PARTICIPANTS IN BIOMONITORING AND PERSONAL EXPOSURE STUDIES- CAPE COD DRINKING WATER STUDY. MEASUREMENTS OF HORMONAL POLLUTANTS IN CAPE COD DRINKING WATEROUR STRONG OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM LINKS OUR RESEARCH WITH PUBLIC HEALTH POLICY AND INFORMS INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES. OUR OUTREACH INCLUDES A POPULAR WEB SITE AND E-NEWSLETTER, LAY SUMMARIES FOR SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS, AND A GROWING PRESENCE ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER. WE GIVE PRESENTATIONS AND WORKSHOPS FOR SMALL COMMUNITY GROUPS, PLENARIES OF SEVERAL THOUSAND, AND PROFESSIONAL AUDIENCES OF DOCTORS AND SCIENTISTS. LAST YEAR, MEMBERS OF OUR TEAM PARTICIPATED IN OVER 100 ADVISORY PANELS, CONFERENCES, SEMINARS AND COMMUNITY EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
