DescriptionExhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections: Each year, the Denver Art Museum presents a wide range of world-class exhibitions that provide a variety of experiences with art for our visitors. During 2011, the Museum continued Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, a major touring exhibition showcasing over 100 pieces from the tomb of King Tut and other ancient sites representing 2,000 years of Egyptian history. The exhibition followed a storyline that explored the splendor of the pharaohs, their function in the earthly and divine worlds, and what "kingship" meant to the Egyptian people. Visitors viewed artifacts from some of the most powerful Egyptian rulers, including Khefren, whose great pyramid is the only remaining structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Psusennes I, whose magnificent golden death mask was included in the display. Museum hours were extended to accommodate the large number of visitors. After the close of King Tut, the Museum presented a varied exhibition program in 2011 that, in combination with permanent collections and education programs, drew 669,000 visitors. In the works on paper gallery, black-and-white drawings by German artist Marc Brandenburg explored the tension between light and dark in Marc Brandenburg: Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, the artist's first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. The Photography Department presented Robert Benjamin: Notes from a Quiet Life, a collection of photos by this under-recognized Colorado artist. Watching Me Watching You brought together a group of unusual drawings that defy easy categorization and left visitors intrigued and delighted. In spring, the Museum presented Blink! Light, Sound & the Moving Image, an exhibition of variable media and technology-based artworks drawn primarily from a private collection and the Museum's own holdings. This exhibition explored how technology-based art relates to the human spirit through narrative, performance, music, humor, social and political issues, nostalgia, and the purely sensory. As a counterpoint to the modern technology of Blink!, Cities of Splendor: A Journey Through Renaissance Italy carried visitors on a sumptuous journey through Renaissance Italy. Paintings, tapestries, and sculptures combined with artfully designed galleries illustrated the distinct stylistic and creative contributions that emerged from the regions of 15th and 16th century Italy. The year's highlight was the museum-wide celebration of a single medium, Marvelous Mud. A first for the Museum, this suite of exhibitions and programs highlighted the varied uses for a common medium, clay. Because clay is used throughout history and in every culture, this experience drew from collections in every curatorial department. In the Asian art department, for example, Blue and White showed how different cultures adopted and adapted the very simple yet compelling combination of blue and white in ceramics. Overthrown: Clay Without Limits explored the ways that contemporary artists are still using this medium today in installation artworks that defy expectations about how clay is used in art. Marajo: Ancient Ceramics from the Mouth of the Amazon focused on the elaborately decorated red, white, and black earthenware ceramics from the people who occupied the Brazilian island of Marajo from A.D. 400 to 1300. Marajo was the first exhibition devoted to this topic in the United States.Description

DescriptionEducation Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include:In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot in-gallery activity stations, art-making, writing and response activities, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. The Museum staff also host 25-30 visits a year from national and international colleagues wanting to experience our approaches to in-gallery interpretation. Family Programs: The Museum is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Family Backpacks (kid-sized packs filled with games and learning materials for families to use on their own in the galleries) and Art Tubes (artist's tubes filled with an art making activity) can be checked out on weekends and school breaks. Discovery Library costume areas, eye spy and other gallery games, as well as the Just for Fun Family Centers (collection and exhibition-based, hands-on activity areas) and the Kids Corner (a do-it yourself art project area) are always available. Create Playdates! targets 3-5 year olds and their families, helping grown-ups explore the museum with young children through storytelling and art making opportunities.Adult and College Programs: The Museum offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to discover, explore and make personal connections to collections and exhibitions. Programs range from tours, studio classes, and art history courses to Art and Wine Pairings, Conversation Lounges, and Insider Moments in the galleries. The Museum's Untitled series engages young adults with art and creativity through unconventional, often unexpected encounters with art the last Friday of the month. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. College students from universities throughout the region participate in internship programs that provide insight into museum professions, and work directly with visitors through our Hot Spot program, a series of in-gallery stations with touchable materials that reach an average of 12,000 people each year.School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of the Museum's school tour program is our interactive touring approach. Our introductory all-museum tours, Perception Games and Imagination Games, have been featured at several national conferences, as have the touchable materials and activities we've developed for our culture and architecture based tours. Roughly 40,000 students visit the museum each year to explore topics related to visual arts, social studies and language arts curricula. Creativity Resource, the museum's online resource for teachers, uses the creativity of artists to inspire creativity in teachers and students and provides downloadable art images, information, lesson plans and resources, and curated blogs on cultural and creativity topics. The Museum provides professional development for teachers on-site and on-line through workshops and in-services custom-designed to meet the needs of individual school districts, and webinars.Community Partnerships: The education department is involved in several strategic collaborations designed to encourage museum visitation by a broader audience. Emphasis is on introducing non-visiting families to the museum. Current collaborations include work with the Mayor's Office for Education and Children, the Denver Public Library's learning and language branches, Assets for Colorado Youth, and several other local community and social service organizations. Community access tours given by specially trained community and Spanish language guides provide these groups with introductory tours of the museum stressing comfort and awareness of the museum and all that it has to offer.Description

Part III, Line 1a:The Museum's collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. Museum policies require that such proceeds be used only to acquire additional art objects. All of the Museum's collection items are held for educational, research, exhibition, and curatorial purposes. Each of these collection items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously.
Part III, Line 4:The Denver Art Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of art for broadly diverse audiences. With approximately 70,000 works of art in its care, the Museum holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of world art between Kansas City and the West. The Museum is an accessible, quality destination, welcoming over 500,000 visitors annually. The Museum is committed to its role as a cultural resource providing shared experiences of art and culture to the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. Collections are organized into nine curatorial departments: architecture, design & graphics; Asian art; modern and contemporary art; native arts; new world; painting and sculpture; textile arts; western American art; and photography. The American Indian collection is the single largest group of works in the Museum, containing more than 19,000 objects representing more than 100 tribes ranging in date from prehistoric times to the present day and assembled with dual concerns for aesthetic and historical significance. The Denver Art Museum was one of the first fine art museums in the United States to collect American Indian art. The Denver Art Museum is also the only museum in the country with major collections of both pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial art. The pre-Columbian collection boasts world-class holdings of Peruvian art and encompasses the largest holdings of Costa Rican art outside of that country. The Spanish colonial collection, rich in paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, is widely considered one of the finest Latin American collections in the United States. This collection of over 1,300 objects is especially strong in Mexican and Peruvian painting as well as colonial silver and furniture from all areas of Latin America. The Denver Art Museum strives to enrich the lives of present and future generations through the acquisition, presentation and preservation of works of art. The collections further the organization's exempt purpose by providing the sustenance necessary to educate visitors about the past, present and future, and inspire life-long learning.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The Denver Art Museum has over 26,000 members who approve the slate of directors nominated by the Board of Trustees at the annual general membership meeting.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aDenver Art Museum members approve the slate of directors as nominated by the Board of Trustees.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The IRS Form 990 is completed annually and a copy is provided to the Museum's Board Secretary for review. The Director of Finance provides the Form 990 to the Museum Board's Audit Committee Chair for review. The Museum's Director of Finance discusses any questions or concerns with the Secretary and the Audit Committee Chair and necessary changes are updated on the Form 990. Once the Director of Finance is in agreement with the Secretary and the Audit Committee Chair regarding the finished Form 990, it is signed and dated by the Director and submitted to the IRS by the filing deadline. A copy is made available to all Museum Board Trustees prior to filing with the IRS.
The Museum's Conflict of Interest Policy is designed to protect the Museum by defining what is a conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest and providing procedures to identify and address conflicts of interest and potential conflicts of interest. Museum trustees, members of committees with delegated powers from the Board of Trustees, officers (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer), and specific employees including the Museum Director, President, Executive Assistant to Director, Deputy Director - Operations, Director of Finance, Chief Curator, Curator, Assistant or Associate Curator, Department Director, or Department Associate Director (all "Interested Persons") are all covered under the policy. On an annual basis, each Interested Person must complete a "Disclosure and Compliance" form. This form requests information concerning all actual or potential conflicts of interest involving Interested Persons, their immediate family members and certain entities in which they or their immediate family members have an interest. As new trustees join the Board, new committee members are appointed, new officers are elected, or new employees who are covered under the policy are appointed (if those individuals are not already Interested Persons by reason of holding another of these positions) such individuals are also required to complete the "Disclosure and Compliance" form. In case of an actual or potential conflict of interest, the Museum uses a process at the Executive Committee level to investigate actual or potential conflicts of interest. Following disclosure of an actual or potential conflict, the person or persons involved with the conflict are not permitted to participate in any discussions relevant to determining if a conflict of interest exists. They may, however, be counted in determining the presence of a quorum at a meeting of the Executive Committee at which a conflict is being reviewed and may make a presentation to the Executive Committee to disclose the conflict and answer questions relevant thereto, but must leave the meeting during the discussion of and vote on whether the transaction or arrangement at issue resulted in a conflict of interest. If a conflict does exist, the Policy dictates ensuing steps, including investigating alternatives to the proposed transaction or arrangement and appropriate disciplinary and corrective action. The Museum maintains records concerning investigations of actual and potential conflicts of interest.Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c
The Museum's procedures for determining executive compensation include reviewing comparability data, monitoring the competitive market place, and approval by the executive comittee of the Board of Trustees. Determining the compensation for the Museum's other officers and key employees follows the Museum's compensation policies and practices. This includes reviewing comparability data, considering the competitive market place, and the review and approval by the Museum's executive management.Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15
The Museum makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon reasonable request.Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The audit committee meets annually with the independent CPA firm to review the results of the current audit and internal control recommendations, if any. The audit committee also assumes the annual responsibility of approving the selection of the audit firm. There have been no changes in these processes from the prior year.Part XI, Line 2c
