| Description | Training and Technical Assistance: National Center for Victims of Crime values education and training to improve the way crime victims are treated and understood. Our training activities and programs served as a resource for those who work with victims, represent victims' perspectives, raise awareness, develop services, and foster systemic change. Our general and topic-specific conferences emphasized a multidisciplinary approach to sharing promising practices, current research, and effective programs and policies that are victim-centered, evidence-based, and research-informed. Our DNA Resource Center helped victim service and criminal justice professionals to understand forensic DNA and DNA databases, the roles of sexual assault nurse examiners helping survivors of DNA exonerations, and how DNA can be used in missing persons cases. We increased the capacity of those who work with victims to provide victims with informed and sensitive guidance related to matters involving forensic DNA. Our Stalking Resource Center enhanced the ability of professionals, organizations, and systems to respond effectively to stalking. Our Youth Initiative built the nation's capacity to support youth victims while working to advance their rights and to ensure youth leadership on issues that affect youth. At our National Conference, victim service providers across the country discussed the current climate of victim assistance, emerging research, and innovative practices. | Description |

| Description | Public Education: National Center for Victims of Crime created and distributed, online and in print, unique informational products including fact books, directories, training manuals, research reports, policy briefs, and victim service materials to the public (see www.ncvc.org). National Center for Victims of Crime developed an extensive resource guide of public awareness materials for annual observances of National Crime Victims' Rights Week. The resource guide was used by victim service providers and allied professionals across the country to heighten public awareness of crime victim issues. At the Civil Actions for Criminal Acts conference, some of the country's leading civil attorneys and expert consultants analyzed approaches and enhanced participants' skills in representing victims of crime and holding offenders and third parties accountable through the civil justice system. | Explanation | One way the National Center for Victims of Crime advances its mission is by presenting its annual Leadership Awards to individuals who have shown outstanding leadership in helping crime victims. The 2011 Leadership Awards recipients were U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT); U.S. Representative Ted Poe (R-TX); and David Austern, the current vice chair of the National Center Board of Directors; and former NFL linebacker Al Chesley. Senator Leahy, who witnessed crime's impact on victims when he served as State's Attorney in Vermont more than three decades ago, has become a forceful advocate for major victim-related legislation including the Victims of Crime Act of 1984 and the 2004 Justice for All Act. Senator Leahy is a fierce defender of the Crime Victims Fund, which supports victim compensation and services needed to help victims rebuild their lives. U.S. Representative Ted Poe was the first chief felony prosecutor for the Harris County, Texas, District Attorney's Office and elected to six terms as a judge. In Congress, he co-founded the bipartisan Victims' Rights Caucus and has been a passionate leader in the victims' rights field. David Austern, formerly an assistant district attorney in New York City and Assistant United States Attorney in Washington, DC, has served the National Center for Victims of Crime with distinction for more than two decades, as president, vice chair, and treasurer. Al Chesley, a former NFL linebacker with the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles, was a young teenager when he was sexually abused by a police officer.
