DescriptionIn 1991, cultural arts, government and business leaders in Miami-Dade County conceptualized a world-class performing arts center located in downtown Miami. Thus, the Performing Arts Center Trust, Inc was established as a 501(c)(3). Ground for the new center, designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, was broken in 2001 and in October 2006 the Center celebrated its grand opening, making downtown Miami home to one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States of America. The Center is situated along historic Biscayne Boulevard between N.E. 13th and 14th Streets. New changes arrived in 2008 as national business leader and philanthropist Adrienne Arsht donated $30 million dollars and, in recognition of the gift, the Center (formerly named Carnival Center for the Performing Arts) was renamed the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Principal venues and components of the Center include:Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House - 2,400 seatsJohn S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall - 2,200 seatsCarnival Studio Theater - a flexible black-box space designed for up to 200 seatsParker and Vann Thomson Plaza for the Arts - an outdoor social and performance space that unites the two main houses across Biscayne BoulevardCarnival Art Deco Tower - one of Miami's oldest Art Deco buildings, was restored and houses the Bombay Sapphire Lounge.Peacock Education Center - 3,500 square feet of workshop and classroom space Several separate entities play unique roles in the Center including Miami-Dade County, which owns the Center complex and provided oversight in its construction. Performing Arts Center Trust, Inc., a non-profit corporation governed by a 40-member volunteer board, manages and operates the Center and is also charged with raising funds from the public and private sector. The mission of the Adrienne Arsht Center is to serve as a focal point of greater Miami-Dade's diverse cultural life, by enlightening, educating and entertaining our community through transformational arts and cultural experiences. The Center is a showcase for the finest in established and developing cultural programs. It is the foundation on which resident companies (Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, New World Symphony America's Orchestral Academy) build their programs and extend their reach. The Center also serves as both a showcase and laboratory, providing first class accessible facilities for smaller, emerging organizations. Every season, the Center programming includes Broadway musicals, World Music and dance, Latin pop, cabaret, jazz, holiday specials, theatre, stand-up comedy, classical music and dance. The Adrienne Arsht Center is becoming one of the most preeminent performing arts centers in the United States as it launched its 5th Anniversary Season in October 2010. 4a) ProgrammingThe Adrienne Arsht Center's strength lies in the diversity of audiences in Greater Miami, its ability to bring world-class artists who highlight and represent the best the world has to offer, and in the way it strives to actively embrace the community. The Center's programmatic philosophy is to present and produce original, high-quality performing arts experiences that reach out and appeal to the diverse members of our community; to bring community members into the Center regardless of barriers of language or cost; and to continue driving its mission to become a Center that actively engages children and their families through performances, education and outreach. Total attendance for fiscal year 2010 was more than 450,000 covering a total of 461 shows and events. Free programming: Free Gospel Sundays reaches out to the African-American community with a concert series that features nationally-recognized Gospel soloists with the area's best gospel choirs. Family Fest features family-friendly outdoor activities and performances. Behind-the-Scenes Tours are held on a regular basis. As part of its Education Outreach, the Center has a growing number of programs that draw Miami-Dade public school students into the arts. The Center collaborates with several organizations to better serve Miami-Dade County. Among the Center's strongest partnerships is with the Miami-Dade County Public School system. The Center has implemented many education/outreach programs, (Beyond Boundaries, Jazz Roots Education and AileyCamp) both at the Center and in the schools, to serve the student population and give them a high-quality performing arts experience. In summer 2010, through a newly formed partnership, the Center welcomed AileyCamp, a six-week summer day camp founded by the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation serving 100 at-risk children ages 11-14 from Miami-Dade County public middle schools. The free program includes dance training, creative writing instruction, personal development and communication workshops, as well as recreational field trips. AileyCamp concludes with an original performance created for and presented by the campers in the Knight Concert Hall.Broadway in Miami: Recognizing Miami's love for blockbuster Broadway shows, the Center presented long-running favorites in the 2010 season including 101 Dalmations, Color Purple, Mamma Mia, Spring Awakening and Wicked.Flamenco Festival Miami: The Center has quickly branded flamenco as its own with this hugely popular festival, which sold out all 7 concerts in each of the past two seasons. Throughout the month of February, the Center celebrates flamenco and Spanish culture with main stage performances of dance and song.Jazz Roots: The six-part concert series is one of the most comprehensive and ambitious in the United States, tracing the history of jazz through performances in 2010 by Dave Grusin, Jazz & Soul, Piano Latino, The Blues, Tribute to Frank Sinatra, and VocaleseMiami Made Festival: The Center enjoys a fruitful collaboration with Miami-Made/Here & Now Festival, the nationally-recognized, groundbreaking commissioning/presenting partnership with Miami Light Project. The festival yields an annual bounty of innovative, eye-opening new works, given up-close-and-personal world premieres in the Carnival Studio Theater, including performances, workshops and play readings.Summer Programming: Contrary to the notion that there is no performing arts audience in South Florida during the summer months, the Center has found success in staging non-spoken and bilingual shows that appeal to residents and tourists alike. During summer 2008, the Center generated record-breaking attendance of over 128,000 seats. This resulted in nearly $3.5 million in gross ticket sales. In summer 2009, the Center brought back the record-breaking Celia, along with Fuerza Bruta, an Argentine sensory spectacle that saw its run extended, breaking the house record for the longest-running show at the Center. The Adrienne Arsht Center, along with presenting sponsor the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, hosted the first ever FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL on Sunday, September 12, 2010. An astounding 7,000 Miami community members-from toddlers to seniors - took over the entire Adrienne Arsht Center campus for a full day of free performances, exhibits by more than 150 local arts and service organizations, children's activities, gourmet food truck treats, and unlimited opportunities to engage and volunteer with local non-profits. FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL was an unprecedented collaborative effort to showcase the coming arts season, and celebrate the vibrant and diverse culture and community of Miami.Description

DescriptionEducation and OutreachThe Center collaborates with several organizations to better serve Miami-Dade County. Education programs, planned with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Resident Companies, and community-based organizations, offer unique opportunities for young people and adults to learn about and enjoy the performing arts both in the Center and out in their communities. The Center has implemented many education/outreach programs, (Beyond Boundaries, Jazz Roots Education and AileyCamp) both at the Center and in the schools, to serve the student population and give them a high-quality performing arts experience. As part of its Education Outreach, the Center has a growing number of programs that draw Miami-Dade public school students into the arts.Jazz Roots: The multi-layered approach of the Jazz Roots programming for schools provides music and classroom teachers the resources they need to engage and involve their students, while students get the live theater experience, exposure to world class jazz, and inspirational access to internationally acclaimed artists. All activities and concert attendance is provided at no cost to the schools or participants. Among the Jazz Roots Education and Outreach programming:Music students participating in MDCPS jazz bands are offered an in-depth look at the "behind the scenes" workings of a live sound check and the opportunity to talk with internationally acclaimed jazz musicians.National jazz scholars lead classroom residencies focusing on musicianship, composition and artistry over the course of week-long residencies.Over 100 students participate in master classes, auditions, and individual and ensemble coaching, leading to the formation of 15-25 piece student all-star jazz band that will present a free public performance.A national and state standard-based curriculum guide is available for Music, English and Social Studies classrooms.AileyCamp: In summer 2010, the Center welcomed AileyCamp, a six-week summer day camp founded by the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation serving 100 at-risk children ages 11-14 from Miami-Dade County public middle schools. The free program includes dance training, creative writing instruction, personal development and communication workshops, as well as recreational field trips. AileyCamp concludes with an original performance created for and presented by the campers in the Knight Concert Hall.Ticket Access Program (TAP): Underserved patrons are given the opportunity to attend performances at the Center through ticket subsidies. Through Miami-Dade County's Culture Shock program, students ages 13-22 can access performances for $5 per ticket. In addition, The Center provides tickets to educational and social services organizations made possible by the generous contribution of individuals and foundations.Beginning in 2010, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County opened its doors to every public school fifth grader in Miami-Dade County for Rock Odyssey, a rock opera version of Homer's Odyssey. A pilot program planned in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Rock Odyssey exposed 25,000 fifth graders to the arts at no cost to the students or schools, affording children the opportunity to experience live theater in Miami's world-class performing arts center. In addition, the center provided an in-class curriculum created by Emmy and Parent's Choice Award winning entertainment pioneer Douglas Love, in partnership with World Book and correlating to Florida's Sunshine State Standards. The curriculum, which was used before and after the show, assisted teachers in familiarizing their students with the Odyssey's story and characters.Description
