| Explanation | Effective April 1, 2009, the Dire Need Fund adopted the authoritative guidance for uncertainty in income taxes, as amended by implementation guidance on accounting for uncertainty in taxes and disclosure amendments for nonpublic entities. This guidance requires management to determine whether a tax position of the Dire Need Fund is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by the applicable taxing authority, including the resolution of any related appeals or litigation processes, based on the technical merits of the position. The Dire Need Fund reviews and evaluates tax positions in its major jurisdictions and determines whether or not there are uncertain tax positions that require financial statement recognition and the recording of a tax liability. Based on this review, the Dire Need Fund has determined that the adoption of the guidance for uncertainty in income taxes had no impact on its financial statements. The Dire Need Fund had no unrecognized tax benefits and, consequently, had no accrued interest and penalties thereto as of April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010. The Dire Need Fund does not expect its unrecognized tax benefits balance to change in the next twelve months. The Dire Need Fund is no longer subject to tax examinations by tax authorities for the years prior to March 31, 2007. | Explanation |
