DescriptionPathways to Success is OPPs signature program, and the cornerstone of our services. This youth development strategy offers a relationship-centered approach to help young people access and attain a mix of educational, employment, and personal skills that contribute to their success. There are two core elements of this strategy. first, every young person needs a caring adult in their lives who can advise them along their journey. In the Pathways program, this adult is a Youth Development Specialist (YDS). Second, each youth should have an individualized plan based on an understanding of their dreams and aspirations, allowing them to map out a realistic path from where they are to where they want to be. Every youth is matched with a YDS who works closely with them as a coach and mentor, helping them to develop an individualized plan and a pathway to long-term educational and employment goals. OPP also offers a range of academic and employment services to assist youth along their journeys. With a mix of these comprehensive services, youth are able to redirect their lives and become economically self-sufficient adults.Based on the situation and need, OPP offers the following programs and services that assist with the youth's journey along his or her pathway:- Academic Support and College Planning & Retention Services - OPP offers extended day academic tutoring, supplemental education services, and comprehensive college and career guidance services to youth and their families. In addition, the agency offers college preparation activities like practice and preparation for the SAT/ACTs, financial aid workshops, campus tours, assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applications, and continuing support while students are in college.- Career Competency Development Training - OPP offers several programs to prepare youth for employment. These programs engage youth as young as 14 years with our hands-on (work and learn) Youth Businesses, which offer youth, ages 14 to 18, the opportunity to produce goods and services in the areas of woodworking, multimedia, art & fashion and computer training. The Youth Businesses also engage youth in occupational skill building and life and employment skills training. Other services including job-readiness training, job shadowing, internships, and job placement with area employers, as well as referrals and job coaching as needed after employment is achieved. From 2007-2010, we have served thousands of youth in our Pathways to Success program, achieving the following results:- Nearly 50% of high school drop-outs reenroll in high school after they come to OPP.- In the city of Hartford, 50% of students graduate high school on time; at OPP, 81% of eligible youth are graduating high school on time.- Over 61% of OPP youth are obtaining an Associates Bachelors or vocational certification with in five years- Over 78% of eligible OPP youth retain employment for 12 months or more.Description

DescriptionHartford AmeriCorps -- Hartford AmeriCorps seeks to close the large academic achievement gap that exists for the majority of students residing in the City of Hartford. This vital work is accomplished through one-to-one and small group academic support. Hartford AmeriCorps members not only provided necessary tutoring services, they served as mentors and acted as role models in demonstrating to youth their commitment to give back to their community through national service and volunteer projects. Long term stability was established in the lives of the elementary and middle school students who one day will obtain a high school diploma and continue their education with a 2 or 4 year college degree and/or vocation certification. Literacy skills are an essential foundation on which the success of these young people will be built.Description

DescriptionOpportunity High School -- Opportunity High School (OHS) is a partnership school between Hartford Public Schools and Our Piece of the Pie formed to provide Hartfords over-age, under-credited youth with a rigorous and supportive academic learning environment leading to a high school diploma. OHS reengages disconnected youth by infusing the youth development principles and practices of OPPs Pathways to Success program into the schools academically rigorous culture. The school recognizes that providing individualized attention, intensive support services and college/career preparation will help these students to reduce the barrier that they face every day and put them on the path to academic and employment success. At acceptance, students are 18 years or younger, have previous high school experience and are motivated to get a high school diploma. Many have left school or are at high risk of dropping out.Description
