| Mission Description | For decades, development professionals have been wrestling with this question: how to permanently break the cycle of poverty? Our response, based on twenty years of experience, is to practice a holistic approach which encompasses the many aspects of a person's selfhood and relationship to family, community, region, and world. This approach recognizes the existence of a complex set of related needs that must be simultaneously met in order to lift a community out of poverty. Our projects, therefore, are based on four-pillars: (1) economic development; (2) education; (3) healthcare, and (4) environmental stewardship. Each pillar is supported by a set of key programs that complement each other to reinforce the ultimate objectives. The economic development programs, for example, include an economic engine, i.e. a profit making venture, as well as an entrepreneurship initiative to diversify the local economy and revolving funds to support these activities on a long-term basis. | MissionDescription |

| Description | Emergency Response (funded by JDC). EWI was not directly touched by the earthquake so it temporarily closed its projects in Ganthier and moved all its resources to the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince where the need for support was dire. EWI cooked and distributed 250 hot meals each day to the victims, their families and the hospital staff; provided potable water; renovated a wing of the hospital to establish the first physical and occupational therapy facility within a hospital; brought in OT-PT therapists from the US and Israel; and purchased, equipped and shipped to the hospital a Ford ambulance. In addition, EWI provided foodstuff to two orphanages and a home for delinquent boys. In June, EWI returned to Ganthier and started a cash for work program for IDPs who returned to the region after being displaced by the earthquake. Sixteen latrines were built in four villages and a fruit tree and vegetable nursery (still ongoing) was established in the village of La Hatte Cotin. | Description |

| Description | Earthquake Relief (funded by EWI). Immediately after the earthquake in January, EWI provided medical teams, equipment and supplies. EWI also provided clothes, toys, drawing and reading material to hospitalized children, small cash to patients who lost everything and were being discharged, and on-going financial support to a few patients who were amputated and needed more time to adjust. | Description | Breaking the Cycle of Poverty - Ganthier. To break the cycle of poverty and stem repetitive catastrophes is a complex endeavor requiring interconnected projects addressing life's basic necessities in order to build strong foundations for a durable future. MONTESSORI SCHOOL: This will be the first Montessori school established in Haiti's rural area. It will provide first class education to 200 children from surrounding villages, and from local middle class professional families. EWI is partnering with Boucledart, a Haitian Montessori School to provide teacher training and participate in project implementation. The planning is completed, teachers have been selected and training will start as soon as funding is secured for this next phase. MICROLENDING: Initiated by a group of women of the Gros Balancé village, the EWI microlending program started as a response to their request. The first group of women repaid their loan on time and this enabled the second group to join the program, which will eventually include two more groups and then, expand to another village and so on. EGG FARM: EWI is working with the most prominent Haitian poultry expert who has 30 years of experience in this industry to establish a 20,000 laying hen egg farm. | Explanation | Two extensions were filed. In 2009, our first year of operation, we qualified to file form 990-N. In 2010, our organization received almost $200,000 more in contributions (largely due to the earthquake in Haiti) than we did the previous year and we experienced some growing pains. As a result, we had to implement a new accounting system, which took longer than expected. The additional reporting requirements also took longer to learn than expected.
