DescriptionCOMMUNITY VETERINARY SERVICES - Community Veterinary Services at the SF SPCA's Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center - For over 80 years, our experienced veterinarians and staff have provided high-quality care to guardians who can afford veterinary services, those that need financial assistance, and free care for homeless animals or pets of homeless people. The Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center covers 44,000 square feet, and is one of the largest medical facilities within an animal shelter. It houses the not-for-profit, full-service Primary Care Veterinary Hospital, the Spay/Neuter Clinic and Shelter Medicine Program, in addition to housing the SF SPCA's Trap, Neuter and Release program for Feral Cats and Animal Foster Care program:Veterinary Hospital - The SF SPCA's Veterinary Hospital is a full-service cat and dog veterinary hospital. It is open to the public and treats more than 11,000 animals a year. Accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, the Hospital offers comprehensive veterinary services for dogs and cats, including complete medical and surgical care, dental services, daytime emergency services, radiology and ultrasound, a full range of diagnostic and monitoring equipment, boarding services, pharmacy, and 24-hour nursing care for hospitalized patients.Spay/Neuter Clinic - The SF SPCA's Spay/Neuter Clinic is a full-service clinic whose experienced spay/neuter surgeons have performed more than 100,000 spay/neuter procedures (currently nearly 8,000 per year). The Clinic was the first facility in San Francisco to provide low-cost spay/neuter surgery. The Clinic also performed spay/neuter surgery for approximately 1,000 San Francisco feral cats free under its Trap-Neuter-Return policy and all unaltered homeless animals accepted by the SF SPCA prior to adoption. Of the public spay/neuter surgeries 97% were provided at a discount and 30% were provided at no-charge.Shelter Medicine - The Shelter Medicine Program is a full-service veterinary services program for homeless cats, including feral cats, and dogs prior to their placement at Maddie's Adoption Center at the SF SPCA. Fully fifty percent of the Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center houses the Shelter Medicine Department which provides treatment, rehabilitation and housing for nearly 4,300 homeless cats and dogs prior to their adoption, and ensures that all animals are kept healthy during a critical time period. Our shelter veterinary team emphasizes disease prevention and effective 'herd' health principles, as well as individual animal care. Infectious disease control has great importance in the shelter environment. Disease prevention encompasses traditional medical practices such as vaccination, parasite control, and nutrition as well as areas less commonly considered in small animal practice, such as air quality, facility design, stress reduction and management of population density. The SF SPCA shelter medicine veterinary team diligently works to prevent disease in such an environment and also treat individual cases.Foster Care Program - The Foster Care Program has long been a part of the continuum of care provided to animals in the community by the SF SPCA. Last fiscal year nearly 1,200 animals - many too young to be placed for adoption - were cared for by close to 150 foster volunteers in their homes. Most often kittens of feral cats, and a smaller number of puppies, adult cats and dogs, are taken into foster volunteers' homes. The SF SPCA now offers end-of-life foster hospice care - Fospice - for shelter animals that have been diagnosed with a life-limiting, non-contagious illness such as renal failure or non-painful types of cancer. While these animals are not suffering, their medical condition and poor prognosis prevents the SF SPCA from seeking regular adoptive homes for them. The SF SPCA maintains legal guardianship of these special-needs animals, and their medical costs are covered by the Society. The volunteers who are willing and able to provide hospice care perform the noble task of enabling homeless animals to live and die with dignity in a loving environment.Trap, Neuter and Release for Feral Cats - Since 1993, the SF SPCA has teamed up with feral cat caregivers to control, monitor, feed and provide veterinary care to feral cat populations - and even help adopt some into loving homes. We provide spay/neuter procedures and general veterinary care for San Francisco's feral cats at no cost.Community Cares - The SF SPCA launched a new community outreach program this year providing free vaccinations for individuals who may not have the ability to access preventive veterinary care for their dogs. In addition the SF SPCA also provided free/ low-cost veterinary care services, such as spay/neuter surgery, to clients who participated at the Saturday clinics.Cinderella Fund -Through this fund the SF SPCA assists the neediest shelter animals requiring immediate medical care, surgery and treatment beyond the scope of our Shelter Medicine Program. It also funds labwork or radiographs (services of the hospital) to support their treatment while in the shelter. Critter Lovers At Work (CLAW), an all volunteer arm of the SF SPCA, raises funds through events such as the Bark & Whine Ball and Hats Off to support cats and dogs needing extraordinary medical care. Community Veterinary Services has also built comprehensive assistance programs for pet owners and agency partners and rescue groups with limited means:CareCredit credit card offers a variety of financing options for SF SPCA services;* Emergency Veterinary Care Fund provides urgent care to acutely ill or seriously injured animals;* Free medical exams, within three business days, are provided to any animal adopted from the SF SPCA or one of our partner agencies (offered in association with the San Francisco Veterinary Medical Association)* Post adoption veterinary discounts of 50% off at the SF SPCA veterinary hospital for 14 days after adoption at the SF SPCA.* Pet-A-Care Senior Discount Program, is the most comprehensive charitable program in the nation, provides 50% off all veterinary services for the lifetime of qualifying spayed/neutered pets of low-income, San Francisco seniors over the age of 65;* Shelter Insurance Gifts provide for up to 45 days of coverage; and* Spay/neuter incentives offer free and sliding scale spay/neuter for the San Francisco community.Description

DescriptionADOPTION SERVICES - Helping cats and dogs to become adoptable, and matching them with caring guardians is central to the work of the SF SPCA. The Adoption Center, with light, airy dog apartments and kitty lofts, has become a model for animal shelters in the 21st century. Considered revolutionary in 1998, its design is emulated around the world. It features dog- and cat-centered design that are respectful and conducive to adoption. Dogs and cats awaiting adoption get top-quality medical care, socialization, exercise and training. Staff and volunteer Adoption Counselors help people and animals make the right match. In 2009-2010, 4,300 animals found permanent homes; the Center has a 97% adoption rate with a capacity of 200. The average length of stay for kittens and puppies is 15 days; dogs, 17; and cats, 29 days. Dogs and cats adopted from the SF SPCA come with first vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, microchipping and a 30-day medical assistance plan. The Adoption Outreach program sets up mobile adoption centers in shopping areas, business districts and community events, so dogs and cats can meet more potential adopters.Adoption counselors and trainers work with potential adopters to ensure a good adoption match and outcome. Post-adoption counseling is also available.Experienced SF SPCA dog trainers and volunteers work with shelter dogs to encourage desirable behavior and to enhance adoptability. Dogs benefit from basic training, plenty of exercise, socialization, and regular dog play.Additionally, the SF SPCA provides a number of related programs including the following:Dog Training - In an effort to make San Francisco a city of safe dogs and responsible dog guardians, the SF SPCA has taken the lead in educating the public about dog behavior and training. The SF SPCA offers an extensive series of public classes, from puppy and basic obedience classes to courses in advanced training and agility. Last fiscal year over 800 dogs benefited from this comprehensive program, which provides a troubleshooting Help Line, classes for Bay Area residents, and individualized services for animals.Cat Behavior Resources - Cat guardians can pick-up or download information regarding cat behavior on many topics including litter box basics, defining and correcting "bad" behaviors, excessive meowing, and selecting a cat for adoption. The SF SPCA provides free information by phone or email offering help with modifying cat behaviors such as furniture scratching, biting, and house soiling. The SF SPCA also offers a Cat Claw Clipping Clinic on the first and third Sunday of each month.Pet Loss Support - The Pet Loss Support Group is a free, monthly program facilitated by Dr. Betty Carmack, author of Grieving the Death of a Pet. The purpose of the group is to provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment to help grieving pet owners, or those facing the imminent death of a terminally ill or aged animal. The SF SPCA was the first humane society to offer regular monthly counseling services in 1983. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month.Hearing Dog Program - The SF SPCA offers hearing dog graduates and their human companions with dog training consultations and sound work refresher sessions, reimbursement of veterinary expenses, equipment and identification badges, and general assistance in accessing information and services.Sido Program - Many people don't have a trusted, willing friend or relative to appoint as guardian for their pet. They worry about what will happen to their pet when they pass away. When their owner dies, dogs and cats enrolled in the Sido Program are taken into the SF SPCA's Adoption Program where they receive loving care and attention while we work to place them in the best possible home. The program is named for Sido, a San Francisco dog whose case - successfully litigated - set precedents in animal rights after her owner died in 1979.Open Door - The Open Door Program provides resources for tenants with pets and landlords considering or seeking to establish a "pets okay" policy. The Open Door Property Owner's Guide outlines guidelines for successful pet policies, a checklist for screening, sample pet policies and agreements.Description

DescriptionEDUCATION PROGRAMS - The SF SPCA provides a range of educational programs that enhance the human-animal bond.Animal Assisted Therapy - The Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Program brings the healing presence of animals to people in a range of facilities including hospital wards, nursing homes, psychiatric clinics, senior centers, and special schools. SF SPCA volunteers, many who work with their own animal, conduct visits on a regular basis. Each animal - dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs and other animals - qualifies through medical and socialization testing before going on visits. When the program was founded in 1981, the SF SPCA was the first animal welfare organization in the nation to offer Animal Assisted Therapy. Today it is a leader in the growing field. Last year, over 100 SF SPCA volunteer teams visited 66,103 patients during 3,400 visits.Other AAT programs include the Puppy Dog Tales Reading Program, which places dogs into San Francisco classrooms and libraries. This promising program provides non-judgmental encouragement and attention to children who are just learning to read, who need remedial assistance, or whose first language is not English. It is in the process of a two-year evaluation. This fiscal year, 167 students received 1,660 volunteer hours in San Francisco public schools.SF SPCA AAT staff has also developed a new program entitled Mastery, Empathy and Social Conscience through AAT which reaches out to Severally Emotionally Disturbed youth and returning war veterans.Humane Education - Humane education is a vital part of our commitment to improving the lives of companion animals. The Program teaches children empathy, compassion and respect for life. It also fosters human values and positive interactions between animals and children and adults. The Humane Education Program brings animals and information on their rights and needs into the classrooms and lives of San Francisco schoolchildren. School visits feature presentations on dog safety, companion animal care and pet overpopulation. Humane Education provides educational resource materials for teachers and welcomes field trips to the SF SPCA, where children get a tour of the facilities and an educational program on animal-related topics. In addition to visits to schools, Humane Education runs weekend, after-school, and holiday and summer programs for youth. Nearly 3,000 youth experienced learning by enhancing compassion, respect and responsibility for animals through hands-on activities and exciting and inquiry-based classes; increased understanding of animal behavior by providing a safe place for children to bond with a variety of animals - and to learn proper handling techniques; and promoted advocacy on behalf of animals, so that they can use their compassion to protect and help animals in our community.Volunteer Program- The Volunteer Program is an integral part of the success of The SF SPCA. Last year, 700 volunteers provided over 100,000 hours for services valued at overy $1.0 million. Volunteers are cat socializers, adoption counselors and dog volunteers, or assist in provision of the following services: adoption outreach, animal assisted therapy, humane education, community veterinary services, or many other special projects.Communications - The staff of the Communications Department acts as a team to publicize and promote all aspects of work of the SF SPCA, and to ensure that the public is aware of the role of the SF SPCA as a vital member of the community. All media outlets including television and radio are utilized in these efforts.Description
