PROJECT H.O.M.E. ACCOMPLISHMENTS - 1989 - 2010Since 1989, Project H.O.M.E. has helped more than 8,000 people break the cycle of homelessness and poverty by providing a continuum of care that includes street outreach, supportive housing and comprehensive services that focus on health care, education and employment. We also work to prevent homelessness and poverty through comprehensive neighborhood revitalization in North Philadelphia. Our accomplishments include the following: Housing - Since 1989, Project H.O.M.E. has leveraged more than $55 million toward housing and economic development. - Project H.O.M.E. currently provides 457 units of housing in Philadelphia, including 285 units of supportive housing for formerly homeless men, women and families with 79 additional in predevelopment. In 2009, these supportive units housed 500 individuals and families. - In 2008, we completed critical renovations to St. Elizabeth's Recovery Residence, allowing us to provide 24 units to two special-needs populations: homeless Veterans and homeless men with physical disabilities. - As part of our efforts to revitalize North Central Philadelphia, we have rehabbed and sold 43 houses to first-time homebuyers. - In early 2011 we will open Connelly House which will provide an additional 79 units of permanent housing. This eight-story building, a collaboration of Project H.O.M.E. and Bethesda Project, will be a LEED-certified, affordable housing facility located in Center City Philadelphia. - Teams from our Outreach Coordination Center canvas the streets of Center City and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, seven days a week to link homeless individuals with shelter, supportive housing, medical care, mental health care and substance abuse treatment. - Through our Public Policy/Education & Advocacy Department efforts, we won a landmark case in the Third Circuit Federal Appeals Court. This case established a significant legal precedent ensuring fair housing practices for homeless persons with special needs. And over the past 20 years, Project H.O.M.E. has continued to work with a variety of coalitions on city, state, and national levels to impact public policies, educate elected officials and maximize resources for housing and services. Opportunities for Employment - In 2009, 185 residents worked with Employment Services in areas which included educational assistance, job search, job coaching, resume writing and budgeting. Employment Services continues to make employment referrals and maintain relationships with our community partners like Department of Behavioral Health, The Philadelphia Zoo, PA CareerLink and ARAMARK. Overall, in 2009, Employment Services assisted 219 people that included our residents, Project H.O.M.E. alumni and Kate's Place. We operate a business that provides employment opportunities and training for formerly homeless persons: Our Daily Threads Thrift Store. - We operate two employment initiatives in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia: The H.O.M.E. Page Cafe and the Library Restroom Attendant Program. The cafe provides job opportunities and workplace skill development to formerly homeless individuals and teens from the Honickman Entrepreneur Program in partnership with Starbucks and Metropolitan Bakery; the Restroom Attendants perform light cleaning and maintenance duties and provide information about homeless services to anyone in need. - Our Adult Learning and Workforce Development programs serve more than 1,200 people annually and provide employment services to formerly homeless residents and community members that include: Adult Basic Education/GED Preparation; Computers and Technology; Job Readiness; Resume Workshops; Career Tracks Programs; Workforce Development Workshops; and Career Fairs. We have also collaborated with Comcast and the Urban League of Philadelphia to provide free customer service training since 2006. - The Harold A. Honickman Young Entrepreneur Program provides youth opportunities to create and run a small business. This competitive program provides students with business mentors, workshops and start-up funding for business projects proposed by the teens. - Our Economic Development Program is creating and implementing a strategy that targets the Ridge Avenue Corridor addressing the need for enhancing the physical environment, improving public safety, strengthening existing businesses and attracting new businesses. Medical Care - Our Community Health Initiative, a partnership with the Department of Family & Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, makes approximately 2,000 contacts with patients annually, providing community-based, high-quality health care and health education services to the St. Elizabeths/Diamond Street neighborhood in North Philadelphia. - In 2009, 94 percent of our residents had health insurance, and we linked over 81 percent of our residents to preventive health care services, whether through our own services or through partnerships and collaboration with local health care providers. - Through partnerships with Council for Relationships and House of Hope and Peace, those in our community can access individual, child, couple and family therapy, as well as workshops on stress management, anger management, parenting, building family and community resilience, coping with anxiety and depression, and empowering the self and others to address violence in the community. - In predevelopment plans for The Wellness Center which will be a 30,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility where Project H.O.M.E. and Thomas Jefferson Family Partners and our other healthcare partners will provide community-based, uniquely integrated, holistic health and wellness services targeted to the needs of the North Central Philadelphia Community. Education - Our Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs (HLCCTL), a state-of-the-art, 38,000-square-foot technology center in North Central Philadelphia provides critical educational and workforce development opportunities for neighborhood children and their families. During the 2008-2009 school year, the K-6 After School & Summer Program served 119 students; the Teen After School & Summer Program served 76 students; and 112 youths participated in our Saturday Programming. Our Adult Learning and Workforce Development program enables community residents, low-income, and formerly homeless people to establish a more secure foundation. The goal for all participants in this program is to promote independence, self-sufficiency and a better quality of life in today's demanding and technical world. The Adult Learning and Workforce Development Program offers a spectrum of training and education programs, job placement assistance, and support services. - A collaboration between Project H.O.M.E. and Germantown Academy has resulted in the Community Partnership School (CPS), an innovative, independent elementary school offering a unique educational opportunity that combines academic curriculum with training in social and moral responsibility along with comprehensive services for talented underserved students. - We sponsor and direct the North Philly Footstompers Drill Team, comprised of 25 youth who compete in many local and national competitions. The Footstompers provides its members with invaluable opportunities that change and enlarge their world perspective while building their self-esteem and promoting teamwork, leadership and discipline.
