MEMORY WORK HELPS A BEREAVED TEENAGER REGAIN POSITIVITY -- CARETAKERS FROM TLAMELANG HOME-BASED CARE AT KHUNOTSWANE (NEAR ZEERUST) TOOK PART IN THE CBP BLOCK 6 IN THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE. IN ADDITION TO TENDING TO SICK PATIENTS OF VARIOUS AGES, MEMORY FACILITATORS FROM TLAMELANG ALSO VISIT OVC AND THEIR FAMILIES TO MONITOR THEIR HEALTH AND ECONOMIC WELL-BEING AND REFER THEM TO THE APPROPRIATE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES FOR ASSISTANCE WHEN NECESSARY. AFTER COMPLETING THE CBP COURSE, TLAMELANG'S MFS BEGAN REFERRING TO MEMORY WORK DURING THEIR HOME VISITS. BY BUILDING GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES, EXPLAINING THE CONFIDENTIAL NATURE OF THE MEMORY BOX INTERVENTION, AND EXHIBITING EMPATHY, TLAMELANG'S STAFF HAVE ENCOURAGED THE FAMILIES TO OPEN UP AND SHARE THEIR STORIES. TLAMELANG HAS INTRODUCED 32 FAMILIES TO MEMORY WORK, RECEIVED AN INFORMED CONSENT FROM TEN FAMILIES TO CONDUCT THE INTERVENTION WITHIN THEIR HOUSEHOLDS. ON OCTOBER 14, 2010, WHILE MEETING WITH TLAMELANG'S TRAINEES FOR AN EVALUATION WORKSHOP, WE HEARD A STORY ABOUT A 14-YEAR-OLD ORPHAN, WHO LIVES WITH HER GRANDMOTHER AND SIBLINGS AND WHO HAS BEEN TRAUMATIZED BY THE DEATH OF HER MOTHER FROM AIDS. THE GIRL DISOBEYED HER GRANDMOTHER AND REFUSED TO ASSIST THE FAMILY WITH HOUSEHOLD CHORES. SHE STOPPED ATTENDING SCHOOL AND WAS OFTEN FOUND SPENDING TIME IN THE COMPANY OF OLDER BOYS. AFTER AN INTRODUCTORY VISIT FROM TLAMELANG, THE FAMILY AGREED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MEMORY BOX PROCESS. AS THE FAMILY CLOSURE REPORT WAS BEING PREPARED, THE GIRL APOLOGIZED TO HER GRANDMOTHER AND SIBLINGS FOR HER BEHAVIOR. SHE IS NOW ATTENDING SCHOOL AND IS HELPING MORE AROUND THE HOUSE. THE MF FELT CONFIDENT THAT THIS POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE GIRL'S ATTITUDE AND LIFESTYLE WAS DUE TO THE TIMELY AND WELL-IMPLEMENTED MEMORY BOX INTERVENTION. 2. ENTHUSIASTIC MEMORY TRAINER TOUCHES THE LIVES OF OVC IN KWAZULU-NATAL NTOMBIFUTHI MALINGA OF SIKHONA COMMUNITY CARE CENTRE IN ZAKHENI (OUTSIDE THE CITY OF LADYSMITH, KWAZULU-NATAL PROVINCE), WAS TRAINED AS A MEMORY TRAINER DURING CBP BLOCK 3 IN 2009. SHE HAS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC AND INSPIRING COMMUNITY WORKERS EVER TRAINED BY SINOMLANDO. AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE, NTOMBIFUTHI PRESENTED MEMORY WORK AT A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL. SHE ENLISTED THE TEACHERS TO HELP HER AND, WITH THEIR SUPPORT, ENGAGED CHILDREN IN THE EXERCISES SHE HAS LEARNED DURING THE CBP COURSE, INCLUDING THE FAMILY TREE, RIVER OF LIFE, AND HERO BOOK. THE FEEDBACK FROM HER YOUNG TRAINEES WAS OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE, ENCOURAGING HER TO CONSIDER ORGANIZING CAMPS FOR THE HIV-POSITIVE PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN IN HER AREA. IN SEPTEMBER 2010, NTOMBIFUTHI TELEPHONED CLIFORD MADONDO, SINOMLANDO'S PROJECT MANAGER, TO SHARE THIS EXPERIENCE AND DISCUSS HOW SHE COULD FURTHER EXPAND HER MEMORY WORK. 3. HELPING A CHILD AND HIS CAREGIVER FACE THE TRUTH -- IN JULY 2010, A 15-YEAR-OLD THOBANI ATTENDED A MEMORY WORK CAMP ORGANIZED BY MPILONHLE, A CERI/SINOMLANDO PARTNER AT GREYSTONE, MPUMALANGA PROVINCE. THOBANI'S PARENTS HAD LEFT HOME, AND HE DID NOT KNOW THAT THEY HAD EVENTUALLY DID OF AIDS. HE WAS ALSO UNAWARE OF THE FACT THAT HIS GRANDMOTHER HAD ASSUMED A LEGAL GUARDIANSHIP OVER HIM FOLLOWING THE PASSING OF HIS PARENTS. THE GRANDMOTHER WAS UNCERTAIN OF HOW TO BREAK THE NEWS TO HIM, SO SHE SIMPLY CHOSE TO AVOID THE SAD CONVERSATION. FOLLOWING A SERIES OF MEMORY WORK SESSIONS AT THE CAMP, THOBANI CALLED HIS GRANDMOTHER, SAYING, "NOW I KNOW THAT I DON'T HAVE PARENTS; THEY DIED." THE GRANDMOTHER CALLED THE MPILONHLE PROJECT'S MEMORY FACILITATORS AND ASKED THEM TO VISIT HER AFTER THE CAMP. WHEN THE FACILITATORS ARRIVED, SHE THANKED THEM FOR HELPING HER GRANDSON UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS PARENTS. SHE ADDED THAT IT WAS A HEAVY BURDEN FOR HER, AND THAT NOW SHE FINALLY FELT RELIEVED. MOLDOVA SUCCESS STORY: ALEXANDRU NOVICENCO WAS BORN ON AUGUST 23, 1991 IN PANASESTI VILLAGE. HE IS THE YOUNGEST IN HIS FAMILY AND HAS TWO OLDER SISTERS. ALEXANDRU'S FATHER HAS LONG STRUGGLED TO FIND STABLE WORK AND HIS MOTHER WORKS AS A HOUSEKEEPER AT AN OFFICE IN CHISINAU. TIMES WERE TOUGH WHEN ALEXANDRU WAS A YOUNG BOY, SO HIS PARENTS PLACED HIM IN AN ORPHANAGE WHERE HE LIVED HIS YEARS BETWEEN 1ST TO THE 9TH GRADE. ALEXANDRU WAS A SMART CHILD AND DREAMED OF CONTINUING HIS EDUCATION THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL. HOWEVER, THIS DREAM SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE OF HIS FAMILY'S DIFFICULT FINANCIAL STATE. THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH RESOURSES TO COVER HIS HIGH SCHOOL EXPENSES, LET ALONE UNIVERSITY COSTS. IN 2007, AT THE AGE OF 16, ALEXANDRU "GRADUATED" FROM THE ORPHANAGE AND BECAME PART OF CERI'S TRANSITIONAL CARE PROGRAM. HE RECEIVED MONTHLY SUPPORT THROUGH A SPONSORSHIP AND LEARNED MANY IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS THANKS TO THE ROUTINE TRAININGS. IT WAS BECAUSE OF THIS HELP THAT HE WAS ABLE TO ACHIEVE HIS DREAM OF CONTINUING HIS EDUCATION. ALEXANDRU WAS ACCEPTED TO STUDY THE TRADE OF AN ELECTRO-GAS WELDER AT THE PROFESSIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2007. IN ADDITION TO EXCELLING AT SCHOOL, HE ALSO PARTICIPATED IN DIFFERENT CONTESTS. IN THE LAST YEAR OF HIS SCHOOLING, ALEXANDRU PARTICIPATED AT THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA WELDERING CONTEST AND TOOK HOME SECOND PRIZE. WHILE HE WAS PART OF CERI PROGRAM, ALEXANDRU WAS SUPERVISED BY A SOCIAL WORKER, WHO ADVISED AND ASSISTED HIM ALL THE TIME.
