| Mission Description | BDS was founded in 1996 to provide excellent legal services to people who cannot afford to retain an attorney.16 years later, BDS has demonstrated that skilled, dedicated, well-resourced attorneys can make a difference in the lives of the people they represent by ensuring that the clients receive high quality legal advice on their cases, and help getting the services and programs they need. BDA attorneys represent their clients in criminal courts, Family Court, Drug Treatment and Mental Health Courts, on immigration matter, and in a variety of Alternative -to- Incarceration programs. Beyond its public defense role, BDS is committed to using the talents and energies of its staff for the benefit of the broader Brooklyn Community. Current activities include our Fellowship and Internship Programs through which we provide training and exposure in public defense to new attorneys and law students. | Description | Legal Services;In 2010, BDS attorneys represented 17042 people charged with a crimnal offense with a total program budget of $5,790,776. In the Fiscal Year 2010, BDS launched its Immigrant Justice Initiative to provide robust immigration service to BDS public defense clients and to the broader Brooklyn community. Over the six months from January to June 2010, BDS provided immigration legal advice to 624 clients, including 225 visa applications. BDS raised $113,000 for this purpose in Fiscal Year 2010.In the Fiscal Year 2010, BDS substantially broadened it approach to seeking resourses through grants so as to expand the immigration legal services we can provide to meet a clear and expressed need amoung our clients and the local population. | Description |
