| Description | Arthritis and Clinical Immunology This program focuses on autoimmune diseases, conditions in which the body turns its own immune system against itself. Already designated one of nine Autoimmunity Centers of Excellence in the U.S., OMRF in 2010 led the largest genetic experiment ever done in the field of lupus. Drs. Kathy Moser and Patrick Gaffney headed a team that analyzed massive amounts of data gathered from 15,000 blood samples donated by patients with lupus. Working with scientists from 33 institutions in Spain, Colombia, Canada, England, Sweden, Puerto Rico and the U.S., the scientists identified a genetic variant associated with lupus and, potentially, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer. Researchers in this program also spearheaded an effort that secured a National Institutes of Health construction grant to build out three floors of OMRF's new research tower. This, along with several other successful grant initiatives, was why OMRF ranked 4th among the 90 members of the Association of Independent Research Institutes for Recovery Act funding in 2010. | Description |

| Description | Immunobiology and Cancer A 2010 discovery by an OMRF immunobiologist could allow scientists to transform adult cells into stem cells. Using adult cells obtained from humans and mice, OMRF's Dr. Carol Webb reprogrammed the cells into a stem-cell-like condition. Once in this state, further research could allow scientists to transform the cells into more specialized cells, such as heart or nerve tissue. The finding offers promise that adult cells could be used as a plentiful and non-controversial alternative to embryonic stem cells. In the shorter term, the discovery could lead to a more efficient process for creating stem cells to treat people with leukemia. Over time, the work might also give rise to new therapies for spinal cord injuries, type I diabetes, heart disease and neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and Lou Gehrig's diseases. 2010 also saw scientists in this program play a leading role in establishing the Oklahoma Center for Adult Stem Cell Research. Guided by OMRF's Dr. Paul Kincade, who was named the Center's founding scientific director, this initiative will provide support and resources for Oklahoma scientists seeking to develop a deeper understanding of and therapeutic uses for adult stem cells. | Description |

| Description | Cardiovascular Biology Sometimes, in an effort to fight off an infection, the body's immune system unleashes a response so massive that it causes life-threatening collateral damage. In a paper published in the journal Blood, Dr. Florea Lupu showed how an inhibitor administered at the right time can allow the immune system to go to work against infection and then shut off safely. The finding could play a part in stopping organ damage in patients suffering from trauma or the deadly blood poisoning sepsis. Dr. Hong Chen also made an important new finding-about the genetic roots of prostate cancer. The research could lead to new diagnostic tools to help physicians identify patients at greater risk for the deadly disease. The year closed with the American Heart Association honoring OMRF's Dr. Chuck Esmon with its 2010 Basic Research Prize. The AHA awarded the prize to Esmon for his "historic" contributions to researchers' understanding of the blood clotting system. Esmon's work, which includes identification of previously unrecognized proteins, led to the creation of two FDA-approved drugs: Xigris, for the treatment of severe sepsis, and Ceprotin, a therapeutic for patients suffering from a life-threatening protein deficiency. | Description |

Each of these individuals is annually provided with a questionnaire regarding potential conflicts and required to disclose any potential conflict that he or she might have. In addition, each of these individuals must annually sign a statement affirming that he or she has; received a copy of the conflicts of interest polciy, read and understood the policy and agrees to comply with the policy. Once the Foundation has collected annual disclosure statements from all directors, officers and key employees, the Foundation's Governance Committee reviews such information to identify situations in which a conflict exists and is material. If a material conflict is identified, the Committee analyzes whether the contemplated transcation may be authorized as just, fair, and reasonable to the Foundation. The Governance Committee then makes a recommendations to the Foundation's Executive Committee regarding the management of all potential conflicts it has identified. The final decision as to the approval and, where applicable, management of all such potential conflicts rests in the sole discretion of the Executive Committee, which makes such decisions based upon the welfare of the Foundation and the advancement of its purpose. The recommendations of the Governance Committee and decisions of the Executive Committee are documented in the respective minutes of these Committees' regular meetings. |
