DescriptionSee Schedule O.Attendance at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield exceeded 100,000 attendees for the second year in a row in 2010. Pumpkin Festival attendance was over 24,000 people in two days, and the Corn Maze drew over 46,000 people. The Chatfield Green, an outdoor theater, hosted Garrison Keillor in August. The new Community Supporting Agriculture Program had 55 subscribers and donated 1800 pounds of produce to several worthy charities in the Denver Metro area. The one-acre plot produced about 10,000 pounds of produce total. To close out the year, 15,000 people attended the Trail of Lights, a holiday season lighting display at Chatfield.Membership Services revenue increased in 2010 over 2009, with member households growing from 19,500 to 27,758. The member household growth resulted from the completion of several major construction projects onsite which have enhanced the member experience, including the Mordecai Children's Garden, the parking garage, and the Greenhouse Complex. In addition, the Moore in the Gardens exhibit and innovative marketing efforts had a significant effect. In recognition of the strong community support, over 240 complimentary memberships were distributed to surrounding non-profit agencies to provide even greater access to the Gardens. Marketing and Visitor Services: The Shop at the Gardens opened in 2009, featuring products that are aligned with the Gardens' core value of sustainability. Some statistics about the retail store include: a.) 34% of inventory on the floor at The Shop at the Gardens meets one or more of our sustainability goals; b.) 10% of inventory at The Shop is made from recycled materials; c.) The Shop promotes 45 different local artists and vendors from Colorado; d.) Approximately 20% of products for sale at The Shop are either compostable or recyclable. Also opened in 2009, the Offshoots cafe is similarly aligned with the Gardens' core value of sustainability. All servewear is compostable, many of the furnishings are built with recycled and/or organic materials, and the food is made with fresh ingredients (obtained locally whenever possible). Visitor services staff are cross-trained to manage admissions and the retail store at the same time, providing a more consistent experience for visitors to The Gardens. The Gardens experienced record attendance of more than 819,000 visitors to its three facilities in 2010. Special Events held by The Gardens experienced an almost 18% increase in attendance 2010 vs. 2009. The Gardens served over 204,000 people at special events in 2010.Description

DescriptionResearch & Conservation: In 2010, the Gardens worked to help to conserve Colorado's biodiversity through documentation, seed collection, and monitoring and restoration efforts. We played a lead role in organizing a bioblitz in South East Colorado. This 24-hour event documented over 900 species of plants, fungi, and animals in the area. Our seed collecting efforts resulted in the safe-guarding of seed for eight of Colorado's rarest species, four of which are listed under the Endangered Species Act. Data resulting from 16 years of monitoring work on the skiff milkvetch was instrumental in the listing of the species as a candidate under the Endangered Species Act. In regard to invasive species management, we published two best management practices manuals providing guidelines for restoration after removal of invasive species such as Tamarisk from Colorado waterways.Description

Part III, Line 1a:The Gardens' collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Gardens' inception, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.
Part III, Line 4:The Gardens' collections consist of living plants, herbarium, library and historical collections. The Gardens' living plant and herbarium collections are made up of approximately 31,098 types of living plants, 48,000 herbarium specimen sheets, and 24,000 preserved and documented native mushrooms. The Gardens has a library consisting of over 30,000 books, periodicals, seed and nursery catalogs, slides, pamphlets, videos, and DVDs. Additionally, the Gardens have historic buildings, tools and farm implements at its Chatfield Arboretum location. All of these collections are held for educational, research, scientific and curatorial purposes. Each of these collection items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales to be used to support the Gardens' collections. During 2010, de-accessioned items, primarily traded or donated to other botanical gardens, were not significant

DBG adopted a comprehensive Code of Ethics in 2005 which includes Conflict of Interest, Whistle Blowing, and Document Retention policies which were subsequently incorporated into the Employee Guidelines and Volunteer Handbook. Board members and officers are required to declare annually any interest they may have in other organizations/businesses; these declarations are reviewed, and if any conflict should occur the individual is required to recuse themself from any decision or decisions impacting the Gardens that may involve those entities. The Code is reviewed at all orientations; additional periodic reviews are also conducted.Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c

Recommendations for adjustments are reviewed and approved by the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15
DBG makes its governing documents and its conflict of interest policy available to the public upon request. In addition, the Annual Report includes financial statements and is available on the website www.botanicgardens.org.Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19
The Gardens' audit committee is responsible for the selection of the independent audit firm and oversight of the annual audit. The audit committee approves the selection of the audit firm annually and meets with the auditors upon conclusion of the audit. The audit firm reviews with the committee in detail the financial statements, internal control recommendations, and other required communications. There has been no change to this process in the current year.Form 990, Part XI, Line 2c
