DescriptionHealthy Living For Adults:The YMCA of Greensboro encourages a holistic approach to health and supports the idea that the unity and strength of spirit, mind and body are at the core of good health. Our staff and facilities offer a welcoming environment where participants feel comfortable and receive the support they need to improve their physical, mental and spiritual health. Through a variety of programs, we teach participants to set realistic goals, to build an active lifestyle, to form eating habits around healthy nutritional guidelines, and to manage stress, all in an environment that promotes positive social interaction and builds self-esteem. Regardless of their starting point, participants can find a community of support to help them reach their personal goals toward healthy living. For participants who enjoy aquatic activities, we offer a number of swim lessons, water exercise as well as a masters swim program. Our adult swim lesson classes are designed to meet the needs of both beginners who are not comfortable in the water and more advanced swimmers who need to work on proper techniques, strokes and body position to help improve strength and endurance in the water. Our wide variety of offerings for water exercise classes can also meet the needs of beginners through advanced participants. Classes such as water walking provide less impact than walking on land and focuses on endurance, mobility, and therapeutic conditions. Deep water classes are geared to work your cardiovascular system and strengthen your joints and muscles to give you a total body workout with no impact. The masters swim program is available to those looking for a more competitive swimming environment. The workouts and training programs are tailored to the individuals goals and interests. For active older adults, we offer a number of water- and land-based programs tailored to meet many specific needs. General water exercise classes promote good health through exercise that is easy on the joints. Aquacise classes increase joint flexibility and help relieve pain. Fibromyalgia classes are designed to concentrate on muscular strength, flexibility and aerobic exercise and can help provide relief from some symptoms. Multiple Sclerosis classes are designed to help those with MS better cope with their daily activities of life through workouts designed to improve muscular strength and mobility. Our land-based activities include Gentle Fitness - a group exercise class for those who want to keep active while keeping their feet on the ground and Mature F.I.T. 101 - a strength-training program that will make day-to-day life easier. The goal of the program is to have increased muscle strength, improved body composition, enhanced joint flexibility and increased mobility. For those who prefer a more strenuous workout, we also offer Zumba- a fun class that joins Latin dance with exercise, Hip Hop Hussle which blends hip hop and dance moves for a great cardio workout, Yoga, Pilates, Cycle, extreme tone and step classes. For participants whose goals revolve around weight loss or improved fitness, we offer a variety of classes on dry land designed to hold participants accountable for improving their fitness levels. Lose to Win is intended for those who need a little competition to take charge of their health and would like support and education to help them reach their weight loss goals. Get Real Weight Management is a program designed to offer participants a successful weight management program based on these four major factors: 1) adequate physical activity 2) sensible eating 3) self-empowerment and 4) self-acceptance. Fitquest is an in depth introduction to the wellness center that is intended to provide new participants individual guidance and support for a 12 week period. During the 12 weeks, meetings are scheduled with a wellness coach to introduce a new component of fitness on a weekly basis. Personal attention and supervision is provided with the weekly meeting ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. For those participants who prefer to keep active through organized athletic activities, the YMCA also provides team sport activities such as soccer, basketball, volleyball and kickball to adults in the community. The YMCA has identified the growing national obesity rate as a critical issue and our healthy living programs are designed to help those who are a part of those statistics develop new skills for self-improvement and disease prevention. The YMCA of Greensboro is the lead agency in the Get Healthy Guilford Coalition, which includes over 73 agencies and over 125 community members. The mission of the coalition is to reduce and prevent obesity and obesity-related illnesses by encouraging healthy lifestyle choices. The work of the coalition is accomplished through awareness, education, and advocacy. The coalition promotes a culture and environment that supports both individual and community efforts to eat smart, move more, and safely achieve a healthy weight. As our mission includes everyone, it is important that we provide programs and support for all, regardless of ability to pay. We serve adults of all ages, abilities, races, nationalities and religions and provide financial assistance to those who need it. During the year, we served 15 local adult group homes from the Greensboro community. In 2010, we served approximately 30,230 adults in our community and provided financial assistance in the amount of $225,537.Description

DescriptionYouth and Teen Development Programs:At the YMCA of Greensboro, working with youth and teens involves much more than developing specific skills for sports or individual activities. Those are merely the vehicles to develop something much more important...the whole child. Our programs use the platform of a specific activity to teach skills necessary for life at any age; enjoying an active lifestyle, being part of a team, making good choices, playing fair, persevering against obstacles, stretching yourself to meet your potential and perhaps most of all being confident in who you are. Depending on the age or interests of our young participants, a variety of programs are available to teach those skills in an environment of spirited fun and in some cases friendly competition.Youth WellnessGet Healthy Guilford is an initiative that involves numerous activities to support youth health and wellness activities. Over the course of the year the program has provided many opportunities for health and nutritional education and fitness activities for children throughout the Guilford County service area. The YMCA offers abundant opportunities for children, tweens and teens to participate in fitness programs. Busy Bodies is a program that provides physical health activities for children ages 6-12 and includes activities such as track and field, kids yoga, dance fever and kids cardio and weight intervals using kid friendly weights, tubes and more. Tumbling is a progressive program, which allows each childs individual achievements and successes to be celebrated on a weekly basis by completing a progression chart, supporting a goal-oriented learning style for the children. Kid Power is a 4-week wellness program consisting of both cardio workouts and resistance training that is designed to get kids familiar with exercising. Gymnastics is another program for youth that incorporates strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and discipline. The YMCA also offers pre-school dance classes to children ages 3-5 which allows the young children to learn coordination through dance while having a lot of fun. The Energy Factory provides a setting for a young persons enchantment with video games to be a positive influence as it offers a variety of video games that require physical activity to play. When teens reach an appropriate level of growth and maturity, they can participate in a certification program to learn how to safely benefit from more advanced equipment and techniques available in the adult fitness center. The YMCA youth aquatics programs support our mission of building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The teaching methods are student centered and are designed to help develop each participants human potential, to encourage and promote safety in all aspects of aquatics, and to assist participants in perfecting skills to the best of their ability. Each skill level builds upon the preceding level so as a childs confidence and endurance increase, more complicated strokes are introduced. The YMCA also has a swim team in which children swim against other teams on a more competitive level. Although swimming is an individual sport and teaches children a great deal about responsibility and independence, the team aspect of the sport is often forgotten. Swimmers are involved with a team with a common goal; a team that is focused on supporting and helping every athlete achieve their personal aspirations. Athletes not only benefit from the support of their teammates in their individual pursuits, but they also learn how to support others and work cooperatively to become better people. YMCA programs are offered at affordable fees, and financial assistance is available for those who cannot afford the full fee. Approximately 15,029 youth and teens utilized the wellness and aquatic activities at the YMCA and approximately $101,679 was provided in financial assistance. The YMCAs focus on families includes programs such as Dive-In Movies where families can enjoy some fun in the pool while watching a movie displayed on the walls of the aquatic center, and other types of family night activities designed to bring families together for fun and fellowship. Family activity time is built into our schedules at all of our branches. The Ultimate Potential Project, an adolescent pregnancy prevention project is a collaboration between Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency, the YMCA and Womens Workforce Web. The YMCA is providing memberships, swim instruction, and transportation to the 50 participants to the YMCA for the program activities. Our efforts to serve all include the weaving of the developmentally and mentally challenged population into the fabric of the YMCA through our work with 15 local youth group homes. These residents join us on a regular basis for a variety of activities including basketball and swimming designed to incorporate some physical activity and fun into their routines of life. Youth SportsThe YMCA recognizes that involvement in sports can have lasting positive benefits for young people. Youth sports increase a childs healthy development, physically, as well as mentally, emotionally, and socially. Sports programs help to build and develop skills, self-confidence, health and fitness, respect for others, sportsmanship and teamwork in children. These programs provide a quality experience that will not only develop the individuals athletic skill, but also provide an understanding that there are many ways to win. YMCA youth sports allow for every child to have a chance to play in each game and support the teaching process that embraces the philosophy of athletes first and winning second. Sports programs include, but are not limited to soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and flag football and are open to both boys and girls. Approximately 6,819 children participate annually and approximately $16,323 was given in financial assistance in 2010. Youth and GovernmentThe Youth and Government program educates high school students about the principles of democratic government. The program encourages personal growth and develops life-long, responsible citizenship by providing experiential learning and providing public forums to recognize the capabilities of high school students. The program culminates in the annual Youth Legislature conference, which provides an opportunity for attendees to practice the multitude of civic skills learned in the course of the program. In 2010, 10 students from local high schools participated in the Youth and Government program.Black and Latino Achievers ProgramThe Black and Latino Achievers program at the YMCA of Greensboro is a teen leadership and mentoring program for 8th-12th graders. The program is designed to help meet the growing need for support and mentorship in the critical years of high school. Each student has the opportunity to attend 15 sessions that include an orientation session, 7 leadership sessions and 7 workshops on personal and professional interests and development. The leadership sessions have been developed in conjunction with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) to be both effective and fun. The sessions are held at the CCL campus and are all geared towards increasing participants self-awareness, which CCL has identified as the single most important factor in developing responsible citizens, friends, family members and leaders. The program includes topics such as: Who am I, What does an authentic leader look and act like, How does leadership exist in teams, and How do my values impact my own actions which help to increase that self-awareness of students. The program does not use traditional teaching methods - no chalkboard and no wrong answers. In fact, the activities change and adapt based on feedback from youth and mentors about what worked and did not work. This responsiveness to the realities of learning and participants lives leads to greater participation within the program and increased participant numbers. The workshops on professional interests educate and expose participants to various career fields such as Communications, Health and Medical, Law and Government as well as promote and encourage students to further their education in post-secondary institutions. A large part of the success of the workshops are the adult mentors who have volunteered their time and talent to help guide and educate the teens on their professional interests. In 2010, 136 teens were enrolled in the program. In the spring of 2010, 26 of the youth Achievers visited 5 colleges and universities in Virginia and Maryland. During the tour they were able to speak with admissions counselors for admission requirements at each school, talk with students, and were able to tour the campuses...Description

The YMCA of Greensboro provides safe, affordable, quality supervision of children, allowing parents to remain gainfully employed knowing their children are flourishing in a supportive and developmentally sound environment where the ultimate goal is to prepare children to succeed. Pre-school ChildcareThe YMCA of Greensboro offers a pre-school program for children ages 3 and 4. The curriculum focuses on the development of the whole child by focusing on social, emotional, physical and cognitive domains of the child. The program instills confidence in children through activities that build spirit, mind, and body for all. Children are encouraged to express their creativity and curiosity when exploring within learning centers such as dramatic play, science, blocks and arts and crafts. Approximately 65 children have benefited from this program and approximately $26,754 in financial assistance is given to families in need.School-Aged ChildcareThe YMCA of Greensboro seeks to provide quality after school and summer camp for children in Guilford County. All the school-aged childcare programs emphasize developing self-esteem, moral and ethical behavior, and leadership through the development of spirit, mind, and body. We are committed to developing the whole child, so finding a balance between social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual activities is critical. Daily activities are designed to teach children the character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The childcare programs use the Search Institutes 40 Developmental Assets model in daily programming activities. The after-school programs provide care after regular school hours on school days, and all day on teacher workdays and holidays. The summer day camp programs provide full-day care during the summer months and offers children a day filled with supervised activities including swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and field trips. Each week of camp has a different theme and activities revolve around the themes of the week. The childcare programs are targeted for children ages 5 to 12 and involve approximately 1,693 children on an annual basis. The YMCAs financial assistance program is available to ensure that the YMCA is a place where children of all economic levels can obtain the same quality of care. In 2010, the YMCA of Greensboro provided approximately $115,935 in financial assistance to families in need. Resident/Overnight CampThe YMCA overnight camping program provides a unique opportunity for children to grow, learn and create memories that will last a lifetime. During their week of resident camp children will gain confidence, develop character values of the YMCA, and meet new friends. Activities at camp offer children learning opportunities that foster growth in a positive and encouraging environment. Education and character building are built into every aspect of our programming. At camp children from a variety of backgrounds meet as strangers, often come together as a family, and depart as life-long friends. The close-knit community at our Camp Weaver provides safety, and encourages positive relationships for children and staff year after year. The motto of camp is I am Third and during their week at camp children are truly putting others before themselves. This program served 552 children in 2010 and provided approximately $30,920 in financial assistance.Summer Leadership Opportunities for TeensThe YMCA of Greensboro offers a variety of summer opportunities for early to middle-teenagers to learn leadership skills and train for the possibility of future employment as a YMCA camp counselor. Our goal is for the teens that leave these programs to be strong in spirit, energetic, motivated and displaying a positive attitude; mind highly motivated to learn and serve; and body able to thrive in an active, high-energy atmosphere. Our leader in training and counselor in training programs are designed for teens who are looking to build leadership skills while at the same time learning what it takes to be a great camp counselor. Our introductory leader in training program for rising 8th and 9th graders is a two-week program that promises to be an exciting opportunity that will both challenge and shape your teen into a leader. Our counselor in training program is available as a 4 week overnight session for rising 11th graders. We believe that these youth are the future of Camp Weaver. Therefore, they are encouraged to work together to learn the skills needed to become positive role models, in both our camp and the community. In 2010, a total of 31 teens participated in these summer learning opportunities, with approximately $3,790 provided in scholarship support.Description
